Should I go? I no longer have many/any goals or asperations for my life, and I have really no idea what the hell I want to do with myself or my future. I'm thinking I need to go to college...should I or shouldn't I and why? Thank you.

Go for it, you might enjoy it. Its a few year without having to work, what more do you want?
What are you thinking of studying?

I was thinking of going into writing...building on my writing skills. That's just the general area, not sure what I'm ultimately interested in writing (books, scripts, magazine, newspaper...dunno). Maybe minor in business or computers or something along those lines, but that's the area I was generally thinking.

Cool. I'd love to get into writing, specifically music-related stuff, but I don't know if a course would help me. The one I did helped me to get an angle on the music business which was useful, but all the writing I've been doing since has basically sprung from my enthusiasm for music. However, if I was looking to go into any of your areas professionally (which I'm really not), I think studying would be the best way to go. Go get a degree in comic books!
Even better, come and do it in the UK. That would be an experience, non?

I think if you have ANY interest in going (which you must since you are asking the question) - then you should go for it. It will expand your opportunities, not to mention your life, tremendously.

yeah - college is the best thing that ever happened to me intellectually and thought wise. it really revised what i wanted to do with my life and gave me tons of outlets to express myself and i learned a ton. plus, for social reasons, i think its very helpful in finding friends that are somewhat in your same areas of interest/similar lifestyles, etc. i can't rate college high enough

Jim, you should definately go. definately. Its something that youve often thought about, and as you said, if you dont go now then that another year of your life gone, with out doing anything.
As people have said, it will broaden your horizons, meet like minded people, and your constantly have goals to reach with in the course.
Go go go!
Only question now, is where?
I love you for what I am not, I did not ask for what I have got.
You will get used to me. Welcome to your new joy. |

Jim-
Go for it. College is a great experience, a whole lot of fun, and for someone like you who strikes me as an intellectual kind of dude, I think you will get a lot out of it. Waiting for a while might have been even more beneficial....I personally feel that if I went to college now as opposed to right out of high school, I would have been far more devoted to my studies and perhaps picked a different degree altogether. It helps to work for a few years, and get a sense of what is out there, before devoting a whole lot of time/money to a college education. I didn't have that chance (since my parents were paying, and only if I went to college right away) but I still got a lot out of it.
Plus, you'll get paid more at jobs. Even ones that don't necessarily relate to your degree. And it will open up new job opportunities for you. I think I'm actually going to take my GREs pretty soon, and in a couple of years I might start thinking about grad school (just don't know what yet)...I would ideally like to move out to California with my girlfriend, and do grad school out there.
But i'm digressing....

I donīt know if it is different in the States but I found I didnīt learn anything in college I couldnīt have learned off my own bat - and without the indignity of having an ultimately useless piece of paper dangled in front of me constantly. Granted thereīs some jobs are easier to get with a degree, however for me itīs the Groucho thing - I wouldnīt want any club thatīd have me. That said, there are upsides to being in college of course: like living in a complete responsibility-vacuum for half a decade and getting to sharpen your promiscuity skills and I had the use of the largest specialist library in Europe, tho I find when Iīm surrounded by so many likeminded people I get complacent, plus what is basically required of you in university over here is you spend the time cramming info into your brain to puke it up verbatim at the end exams, and whoever manages to spew the most whole chunks gets the highest mark. Possibly this is an extreme POV as I donīt really consider modern education and indoctrination to be worlds apart. So for my two centimos, I say youīre smart enough to strike your own path.
