Lucky me! I'm going down to Spain to see Pixies on friday...and The Fall on the same night...the 2 best bands in the world in my opinion. If there one guy in rock that could be more brilliant than Frank then it's Mark E. Smith...am I wrong?
That's a fair assessment. Both bands hugely influential. Fall of course have been making great records for over 25 years -- who can really claim that. Mark E. is undoubtably a genius -- loved his influences like Can. Both bands have defined sounds but Mark E is just unique.
On other hand though first time I walked into a PIxies show -- they were supporting Throwing Muses in early 87 -- and heard Charles in the midst of screaming in Caribou, it was just an unbelievable feeling. Knew it was something special. So I gues you are right they are the 2 best bands in world!
As for Barcelona -- great line up with both Fall and PIxies. Luckily just saw Fall in US a few weeks ago -- latest line up and show was great, and will be seeing Pixies in Iceland next Wed. Will be slightly surreal. Fall played theyre a couple of times in 80's -- Live at Austerbaejatbio -- is a must.
Infotainment Scan from -93 is the album I discovered them with...more accessible than "This nations saving grace" in my opion, good starting point. The Unutterable from 2000 is also great and so is their latest "The real new The Fall LP". Their new single "Theme from Sparta FC" is maybe the coolest song ever.
My favorite Fall era is probably the noisiest. I find I still listen to the early '80s records the most: -Hex Enduction Hour -Slates -Room to Live -Perverted by Language -the Rough Trade singles I am a big fan of Steve Hanley. I can't say I've completely enjoyed any of the albums since he left (though some have been good) but I'm trying to give them a chance.
