There were a variety of factors, most of which I can't remember. I think the main reason was just that it's difficult to keep any empire together for very long. It's kind of surprising it lasted as long as it did.

How do you think the American empire will end?

Should I take the (now hopefully) dead frog away from my cat or leave him to enjoy himself but have to deal with the mess in the morning?

Take it away now while it is fresh in his mind, sit him down for a good, stern talking to, make him stay after class, having him write "I will not eat frogs" fifty times on the chalk-board.

Should I have taken a peek at my beautiful customer's Marilyn Monroe skirt over her hips with the swirling wind moment this morning, or was it right of me to just stoically maintain eye contact? What would YOU have done?

I would have stoically maintained eye contact - it's more seductive than oogling.
