... what?

What is the coolest (relatively small) place in your city to see a show? As in, if a new band were touring that was pretty cool, you'd hope they'd play here, and if a band like the Pixies were coming to town, you'd WISH they'd have a secret show here?

Consider this research for a band that is thinking of touring late in the summer. :)

Saskatoon - Amigos
Mexican restaurant/lounge with lots of cool live acts and a good indie rock following. Probably has about a 200 person capacity. Not the ideal layout, but very intimate.

Little Brothers, in Columbus, Ohio, I guess. FB&tCs played there a while back. Cool enough place, and intimate - I think cap. is about 100?

Now Louisville, Ky, on the other hand -we may be moving back there soon, so I have to cover all my bases, that would have been Tewligan's -I think it's called something horrible like Cahoots now - no idea. Anybody from around there know of any cool venues?

Crap! I just remembered -very cool place in Louisville, and they serve great food too: The Rudyard Kipling! http://www.therudyardkipling.com/pages/206997/

Strasbourg: La Laiterie.

Well, in fact it's not the coolest venue, it's the only cool venue in the official 'capital of Europe'.
Anyway, the place includes a nice bar. I met Frnck and Sctt there, in November.

I know nobody gives a fuck about La Laiterie, but I'm eager to get my 4th kitty. ;)

Btw, congrats for your 5000 posts, Dean!

I'm not from DC but I always love the Black Cat, every show I've seen there has been great and had a great group of people.

Ditto -> Black Cat.

-

It's been a long time since I've been to a show.

In the Hampton Roads area of VA, um, I guess the NorVa? (Not very intimate. Cap is about 1200 or so.)

In San Francsico, I think that place would be the Bottom of the Hill -- http://www.bottomofthehill.com.

Great place -- proably 200 people or so.

In Davis we use to have a great place (The Palms). It was basically an old shack with folding chairs but some great acts would come and the atmosphere was relaxed and intimate. But, they tore it down to build some apartments <cue Joni Mitchell>.

My bedroom is quite intimate, I perform there on a nightly basis, sometimes solo. :(

In Vancouver for smallish clubs I like the Brickyard, Cobalt, and "The Pic" (Piccadilly). They are all pretty scuzzy but have great punk bands playing pretty often.

I like the Hope & Anchor in Islington, North London. Its not so much a place that touring bands come as one where new bands start out, but I love it, its a little hole in the ground.
I also like the Scala and Shepherd's Bush Empire, which are bigger but are nice theatres, so they're great.

I have to disagree about Sneaky Dee's. It might be intimate but the sound is horrible. Every show I've seen there sounded like shit. For me personally it's the Horseshoe and the old Ted's wrecking yard. Rancho and Bovine I agree with as well though. Funny story about Bovine, I was there one time and these tourists came in and thought it was an actual sex club and started making out and taking off clothes. When people started laughing they made a hasty exit.

I like the Mean Fiddler in London.

It's really small, sweaty, grungy rock club and quite a contrast to the nice theatre type of venues in London like Brixton Academy.

I've seen some of my favourite bands there and i love it.

Its alright, its not that small. I like the fact that you can sit up on the gallery and actually be behind the band, its a really interesting perspective.

A small club in town called Things and Times was a little bit too small a few weeks ago when new band Fokofpolisiekar (Fuckoffpolicecar) played there. One of the kids in the crowd spilled his beer all over the sound board and the gig had to be abandoned.

not sure about that one... it's not that small, and it's academy 3 now, unfortunately. i liked it being called the hop and grape. i think night and day is a better manchester venue, smaller and very cool... big hands is probably even cooler in that case... but a bit too small...

I don't go to too many shows but I really like The Middle East in Cambridge. Axis (or is it Avalon) is pretty good too. I saw Weezer there for their come-back tour (when they were still good and put on a good show) and I'm going to be seeing Aimee Mann there soon.

In Edmonton, I think most people would vote for the Sidetrack. This seems to have been the case since before I was old enough to wonder if I cared, in my experience it's a great place. Honestly, I haven't seen a show there in a couple years, but I will be this coming Friday, so we'll find out then if the magic is still there.
http://www.sidetrackcafe.com

If you're looking to draw the "young, hip, hard rockin' crowd," try New City. Bands I remember playing there include Bad Brains, Rev. Horton Heat, Danko Jones, and that. So the place draws established bands but is also very friendly to locals and small-timers, and my guess is that if you played there you wouldn't have to worry about nobody showing up.

Just don't get suckered into a booking at the new Starlite Room (or lounge or whatever it's called). Back when it was called The Rev it was my favourite place to see a show, and when Frank Black came last year I had a fantasy that they'd reopen it for the night. Anyway, it was closed, renovated, and expanded. Now it looks like the band is playing into a corner, and if that's not bad enough, you have to buy a membership at the club for the privilege of buying a stupid drink! It's only been open again for a couple of months, but I've a feeling that playing there isn't going to be the best way for a band to make lots of Edmonton friends. Yes, that may have been a rant, but considering the location of the guy asking I think it's fair to include this as the odds are the band will come to this city.

There are, of course, many others, but I think that's what you're looking for. Typing has drained me, I'm going back to sleep.

Nothing is ever something.

Awesome, thanks again guys. This is very helpful, seriously. I always wondered how a band could prevent itself from playing some crappy venue unknowingly, this is definitely one way. Keep 'em coming!

As a denizen of the DC Area... I would say the Black Cat. Wolfman and Obfuscate already mentioned it. It's a great venue because it offers a main stage on the 2nd floor (for bigger regional acts and what not) but also a backroom stage (for more local/indie bands and stuff.) Also, the booking is a little selective (read: snobby) when it comes to what bands/acts they will book and which ones they won't. At its best it provides good, original, non-mainstream genres of music and exposes them in a great club/bar setting....at its worst it caters to the indie-scenester crowd who are "too cool for their own good."

Still, the Black Cat is the best rock/indie bar in DC. Great sound, great bands, great setting. I frequent it quite a bit.

there are quite a few here. it's a tough call. i'd have to go with McCabes as "coolest" simply because i've seen Frank play there several times, and those are all among my favorite shows of all time. it's a guitar shop in Santa Monica, with a room in the back with a stage. there are probably about 150-200 steel folding chairs lined up. that's it. very simple. very intimate.

i like the Troubadour too. it's big enough that cool bands play there, but small enough that, even if you're all the way to the back, at the bar, you can still easily see the band and enjoy the show. and they've got a kitchen there where you can get hamburgers and hotdogs.

I don't think I've ever seen a show at Spaceland that I didn't enjoy. Plus they sell giant Red Hook ESB draught.

I went to The Echo a couple months ago and it was a decent little venue-- just a bar with a stage.

I agree that McCabe's is very cool, though I've only been there once (one of Frank's four shows last August). No beer there, though. Only cookies.

Well, you prob arent intending on touring UK, but if you do -

HERTFORDSHIRE -

The Harlow Square : in the middle of no where, no one can ever find it, but fuck me is it a good venue. Best promoters around. Reading bands have pften played there warm ups here. Great sound, nice lay out, lovely people.

Club 85 : Interesting lay out. seen it progress over the years, and quite a class little place now. fairly big, good bar, comfy seats, but plenty of room to stand. decor is a bit hippy tho! again, real lovely people.

The Green Room : Cute little room above a pub. 120 max on people. VERY intimate, very cozy, and fairly ok sound. (depends on whos on the desk, sometimes can be great)

BRIGHTON -

The FreeButt - Odd U shape layout. but nice, friendly, lous sound engineer. Good bar, very intimate set up.

HobGoblin : A lovely grungy little boozer, with a fab jukebox. Very intimate, very lively, and always packed.

I love you for what I am not,
I did not ask for what I have got.

You will get used to me.

The Dux de Lux - Chrischurch, New Zealand (http://www.thedux.co.nz/)

It's an awesome vegetarian & seafood restaurant/bar with fantastic beers from an in-house brewery...
and in one bar there's a tiny little stage about 10cm above floor height which just rocks. room holds a max of about 50 people, with others spilling out into the gardens etc.
bands are always free regardless of stature...it's just awesome.
had some fantastic nights there...
