Is this going to become the greatest album ever recorded? If so, it's about time... |

at the one hand I find it very dissapointing that he didn't do squad with the original recordings but I think that may have something to do with copyright issues and we all have those old recordings on bootlegs anyway but still those recordings were crazy!
...and unfinished too so maybe this is the right way to do it and I saw one of the smile tour shows and it was so amazing that I think that this could be the greatest album recorded we'll wait and see

I think the instrumental tracks will more-than-likely be better than the originals; it's Brian's vocals I'm worried about, but I'm still expecting a masterpiece. I'm also really looking forward to Getting in Over my Head, to be released June 22. It's the first album since Love You in 1977 (which was the first one since Smiley Smile and is an excellent album) that has been produced solely by Brian Wilson, so I expect it to be loads better than the Andy Paley and Joe Thomas production on the last two albums.

I also thought that Smiley Smile wasn't produced by Brian I think I read that brian wasn't really interested anymore after they shitcanned Smile and I don't have Smiley Smile with me here but I believe (and that's what various internetshops say) that it is listed as a beach boys production
I love Smiley Smile but it sounds way more dope and ''out of there'' than Smile would (if I listen to the unfinished tapes) so I don't see the point of Mike 'SoaB' LOVE and maybe some other beach boys that it wasn't commercial enough while they made a way more spacey record after that

Smiley Smile was produced by The Beach Boys. Brian didn't have a heck of a lot to do with it. And yeah, I agree, Smiley Smile sounds way more doped out than SMiLE. As an album, though, it's not completely horrible. Now, put into the context that "this is the album that replaced SMiLE," it's total shit. "Vegetables" is the only forgiveable butchering of a SMiLE track, in my opinion, but even then, it's still not that great of a track.
Fuck Mike Love.
I'd love to see a SMiLE 66-67 box set...maybe with some never-before-bootlegged tracks. I hear they recently uncovered an instrumental of the second half of Surf's Up.

Oh, my bad. I hate the SS version of Vegetables compared to SMiLE. With Me Tonight was great, however, but of course is not on SMiLE. Wind Chimes and Wonderful were absolutely dreadful on SS. And then (different album, but...) the Surf's Up from '71 is terrible (sans the new outro).
I think you're probably right about Brian being able to pull the vocals off in the studio pretty well, but it certainly won't be the same as his '67 vocals. Here's a question for anyone who's an expert on the subject: is it possible through any means such as surgery, coaching, etcetera, for someone like Brian to regain his old voice?

I'm no expert but to me it sounds like impossible
I like wind chimes on SS though on a whole other level than I like wind chimes on Smile

From the mouth of the man himself: "it's really gonna blow some minds ... I have outdone myself with this one. I am Brian Wilson and I am here for you musically, if you want me."
Just the fact that he said that much about it tells me it's %200 true.

I just got Brian Wilson tickets for Oct. 16! I'm so fucking excited right now that words can't express it. I'm seeing the Pixies Oct. 13 and 14 and on the 16th I'm seeing Brian Wilson perform SMiLE. Who could ask for a better week?

I'm gonna have to look into downloading some of the smile bootlegs... in fact I have found the gig he did in Bristol in March of this year, so that might make a nice present for the old man as he was at that gig. I've heard so much about Smile, Pet Sounds is a cool record, so it will be interesting to compare the two.
