I kind of don't know what to make of this, I mean is it the greatest stunt in history or is it a very sick joke. I mean did his family, wife, friends etc all think he was really dead? If so how can he live with the grief he must have put those people through? Nah fuck it this has to be a hoax right? After seeing Man on the Moon a few weeks ago this kind of leaves me with with a sour taste in my mouth. Well put it this way, I'm extremely confused. :s
For ten thousand years he slept, his mind feeding on the nightmares of the weak. Now he has awakened. As the night turned crimson, the fire-blade shattered and his power died. Then, the slaughter began... |

Turns out the_swimmer is actually Andy Kaufman.
==edit== Interesting...I searched news.google.com for "andy kaufman" and the most recent story is at: http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2004/5/emw127003.htm Currently the release is pulled and it's status is "We're sorry. This release has been placed on 'Dispute Hold'." |

Is this real? It's so bizarre.
Personally, I always found him to be super annoying and spastic - I don't find obnoxious mean humor to be that funny, BUT I did love his Mighty Mouse routine.

I sure he mentioned something about doing this years ago. Anyone read the autobiography 'Welcome to the funhouse'? It's great. This seems like a bit of a stunt, though. Which is a little bit twisted, unless it's a former friend who he possibly told to do this in twenty years time!! |

Wow...what the hell? Can this be real? That's so weird if it is. It'd be pretty damn amazing, too! Who knows what to think...Man On The Moon is a great movie.

I could see a friend doing it as a commemorative tribute or whatever you might call it on the 20th year since his death. It's possible it's real, but who knows. He's going to have to step back into the limelight if he really wants to be legendary in the "pretended to be dead for 20 years" sort of way. I find what little there is out there insufficient to make a decision one way or the other as to whether it's true. Either way, amusing I suppose...

How could he be living in New York and no one has spotted him? The rumors of him being alive have been pretty widespread, so someone would have to piece it together. I hope he's alive, but it's hard to believe. |

I looked into this a little bit last night, what I found out is that it was a paid press release from a company called e-media or something like that. On their site the top news stories were similar to those you would find on the cover of the national enquirer.
That being said, if it really is him, I think that is exactly where he would go to release such a story. Whomever is responsible for the hoax (if it is a hoax) has certainly done their research.

I think Kaufman mentioned he would hide on an island or somewhere, when he talked about pulling off a stunt like this. It can't be for real, though.

"Response to Snopes I actually paid off the guy to write that snopes piece in order to stir up controversy.
Trust me, it's not easy being bigger than Jesus Christ right now. Everyone wants me on their show to make my first public television appearance. Which one would you guys suggest?
As far as the criticism in the snopes piece, all I can say is that in 5 years I will still be known as Andy Kaufman, the guy who pulled off the greatest comedy prank in the history of mankind, and they'll still be guys who point out what's patently obvious to any semi-intelligent 13 year-old.
That being said, all the non-believers are still forgetting that they are dealing with a meta-prankster in me here. Just look at my record--I'm the kind of mad genius that would always leave you wondering. How boring would this be if it were plastered all over CNN and SNL and there were zero doubts left in any rational persons mind?
I would never be so dull as to leave my comic immortality up to such a lame and pathetic return to the screen."
The fact that he says "just look at my record, I'm the kind of mad genious that always left you wondering" kind of shows that the hoaxer is getting desperate in trying to keep up this little sheraid. Now I really don't believe... Then again how many people on this site thought that frnck blck was just some random guy at first?
For ten thousand years he slept, his mind feeding on the nightmares of the weak. Now he has awakened. As the night turned crimson, the fire-blade shattered and his power died. Then, the slaughter began... |

Whoever it is, they have/are using the writing voice and grammar of a teenager with average or below-average education. I would expect some well thought-out musings from someone who has been considering this stunt for 20 years. I'm not at all convinced. The thing is holier than the Pope wrapped in swiss cheese.

Why do people die?
I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore. |

Maybe He's doing that on purpose. I personally won't believe anything until I see it on CNN or some reputable news source.

I suppose you never went to a comedy club...also, during his stand-up career, most in the audience were cokeheads = chain smoking. |

that's kind of an unfair stereotype to cokeheads. there are plenty of cokeheads (and even crack whores) who don't smoke at all. |
