I have always thought that FB has far more presence and outright coolness than Black Francis
But then was Black Francis cooler for not being cool, not having presence and yet making a sound like a banshee's orgasm?

Black Francis was more swaggering and made for excellent magazine quotes (coolest rock name ever too). Frank is of course cool in his surly, grizzly, dancing bear kind of way too.

I always thought Black Francis was a pretty cool name too. When he first changed it to Frank Black I thought "Oh no. Why change your name?" But needless to say I'm pretty used to Frank Black by this point. And obviously, the name is secondary to the music. |

I think the name was one of the things that first attracted me to the Pixies - "Black Francis" mysterious, dark, spanish - you can almost imagine writing Come On Pilgrim then thinking - darn -now I'd better change my name - no-one called Charles could write anything this messed up...

When I first heard the name Black Francis, I sort of wondered whether it was a reference to Black Peter, the traditional companion of Santa Claus in some cultures.

Black Francis sounds like an evil monk. You don't get much cooler than that.

So then he's the Black Francis, as opposed to the White Francis?

As Black Francis, he seemed more innocent about it all, like he was enjoying the ride of being in one of the coolest bands around. Back in the 90's, it was refreshing to see somebody with such talent look like they were enjoying themselves rather than playing the moody/mysterious (stupid) rock star. That was one of the things I like about him then.
VERDICT: COOL DUDE
As Frank Black, well the man is just awesome. Black Francis was always destined to evolve into him. Black though now seems more cynical about the whole thing, He's seen and been through alot. And it shows. His interviews never fail to raise a smile. Journalists beware. The dog bites. And his music speaks for itself under the name 'Frank Black'
VERDICT: THE MAN. |

I have to disagree with you on this one. In fact, I think Black Francis was the definition of moody/mysterious rock star. Not rock star in the snorting-coke-off-a-hooker way, but definitely a cocky guy who knew he was a genius and didn't take crap from anyone, band members included.
Frank Black seems like a much more mellow dude. He rolls with the punches, and I think he's probably enjoying himself now more than he was the first time around.
The yellow/orange debate rages on more than seven months later. We need to ask Frank about that in the next chat.

I was thinking about the interviews I've seen with Black Francis. I was expecting him to be pretty moody and stuff, but was quite surprised how smiley and talkative he was. That's what i meant by innocence. Oh yeah he was totally confident which could be perceived as cockiness, his music backed up his balls. I agree, Genius too.
I think Frank knows he had an amazing band back then and the songs were killer, but knows too they never really got what they deserved. Music Industry people don't seem to give him enough respect as Frank Black, definately his music. Because of this, and some answers of his I've read to questions, I think he's now more "whatever!". I'll make my music for me and if you like it. Fine. youy're right, that is mellow. And content. But deep down, maybe inside, a big Fuck You is reserved for the chosen few. |

Few cigarette butts, crusty old porn mag, half a mouldy cheese sandwich that's all. Oh, a sock and a "heavily played" Elton John record. Somebody here not telling us something? |
