I have some friends (husband and wife) who own a bird and they let it fly freely about the house. This wouldn't be so bad if the thing didn't shit everywhere. And they don't necessarily keep the shit cleaned up all that well. It's everywhere. I don't know how the hell they live in it. I don't care if bird shit isn't exactly as nasty as the shit of other animals, it's still shit and I don't want it all over the place. I don't even like going over there because of the amount of shit. It makes the whole place just overall gross. Anyone else know people who have this happen?

The way people behave with their pets is sometimes really ridiculous. Personnally, I think it's disgusting to sleep with a dog, having bird shit all over the house, etc. And very unhealthy too.

Anyone who doesn't clean up pet shit is asking for trouble. I have two cockatiels. They're only out when they can be supervised and we clean up their crap immediately after they go.
Nothing grosses me out like cat shit, though. Cat owners like to kid themselves that cats are clean animals. IMO they're gross and they have the worst smelling shit of any pet. |

No shit. I live in a small apartment with one roommate who has a cat who doesn't cover up it's shit in the litter box. It's stinks up the place something awful.

but.. cats always go in their litter boxes. isn't that cleaner than indiscriminate shitting, a la birds?
cat shit smelling worse than bird shit i'll give you. but there's no way you can tell me that cats aren't cleaner than dogs/birds/turtles/hamsters almost any pet you can name.
dogs eat their own shit, lick their asses, drink from toilets, and then lick your face. i like dogs, don't get me wrong. but this is an admitted drawback .
birds i never understood.. they make annoying sounds, shit everywhere, can't do tricks, aren't cuddly, and, unless you live in a gigantic bird sanctuary, have to be kept in cages, which kind of sucks.
but that's just me. i'm not a bird person. being a cat owner, i'm kind of anti-bird by default. (in solidarity with my kitten, who actively hates all the birds that come to our window and taunt her).. |

I like dogs, but I hate most their owners. I hate being out walking by myself or my particularly with my kids and people let their dogs come over and sniff us and check us out. They seem to think everyone loves their dog and dying for the chance to pet it.
Even worse is when people let their dogs wander around bike paths. I would rather not hit one of those fucking dogs going 15 mph. And the owners just smile and think it's cute when I slow down and slowly pass their unpredictable beasts. |

not too long ago i got bit by this woman's dog. it was a small dog, but that bite still fucking hurt. i was on my skateboard (something most dogs hate) and this dog started coming at me, barking and growling visciously. that was her cue to pull the fucking leash and keep the dog away from me. but she just kind of stood there obliviously, and let her dog bite me.
she's lucky i didn't pull a Garp on her dog. the thought did cross my mind. |

Great topic. I am against owning birds unless you can let them fly around freely in a HUGE area but I think letting them shit all over your house is totally disgusting. You know, even if you can let them fly around, I still think it's wrong. Birds, of all animals, should not be owned.
My mother owns about 15 (or is it 16 now?) cats. That's really gross, I'll give you, but it's still cleaner than birds. I like dogs but I can't stand to touch them; they're all so dirty and smelly.

This thread proves the benefits of being a Goldfish owner. By the way you can get Psitacosis only by parrots i think.

You can get it from all kinds of birds. There is another disease which you can get from birds called Bird Fancier's disease, an asthma like ilness.
Did Garp bite the dog's ear off? Maybe I've got it all confused with an Angry Kid episode. The dog isn't involved in the only biting incident in that book though, poor Milton gets his dick chomped off as well. Excellent novel that.

I have a Beta and he's been pretty happy lately, making bubbles and whatnot - but I still can't decide if it's right to own a fish either. He's in such a small vase and I guess they like the small areas - would probably never swim in more water if they were "wild" - but sill, I don't know. I have a bit of a problem owning some animals. Cats and Doga truly love us and live longer, happier, healthier lives with us but others don't seem to be as justifiable. I want a Bearded Dragon really bad but I can't bring myself to get one because I'm afraid keeping it captive is wrong.

Actually fish do live quite good if you have a decent tank. With decent i mean large enough for the size and number of fish, clean and decorated in order to simulate their natural ambient. Goldfish are pretty easy to take care off. They just need a cold water tank and a recycling pump that cost no more than 30-40$. More complicated (and expensive) is owning tropical fish.

My uncle had a budgie called Joey. He used to let it round the room, and it would sit in your hair and drink from your cup. Still, it was pretty cool at 10 years old.

| MCA, I like your goldfish. You're right, fish make the best pets. Mine lives in a medium sized Eclipse tanks. She's just a 25 cent goldfish but I've had Topanga for over two years now. Cory and Sean died within the first year but she's still hanging on. |

We had cats: Bert & Ernie, Fat & Thin... My parents dog is called Maggie after the Simpsons, and our old cat was Basil as in Fawlty. Its all good.

My brother's cat was named Nicky, short for Nicademus from "The Secret of Nihm". I'm thinking of changing my signature to "Move your house to the lee of the stone".
Anyway, owning pets itself is a little bizarre (at least when I thought about it one time when I was stoned it seemed bizarre), but to give a pet a really meaningful name- do you pick a name that you really like and might actually want to name a kid you have in the future? Do you name your lop-eared bunnie after your favorite aunt? No. Because it makes it a possibility that you will have to say the words, " This morning I found Estelle, ripped to pieces by a coyote." It's bad luck and an invitation to trouble.
You name your lop-ear Cyndi, as long as you don't know anyone named Cyndi.
