its only on the b-sides cd...but i dont know all that much of frank black. i like coastline too. |

| I think the best song Frank has ever written is "St. Francias Dam Disaster". There's just something about the story of the flood that is so interesting and amazing. Way to go Frank. |

It's hard to compare albums with 10 years of time difference, it would be easier to pronounce if we had heard all the songs at the same time...now we are more used to old stuffs and may say new ones are better but the first times I heard songs like Superabound, Big Red or Fu Manchu...it was unbelievable...Now it is not the same effect and I would say :
Best song from DITS : End Of Miles (again better live! Still wonder why he did not play it?)
Best song before DITS : too hard...the chorus of Big Red? The fast/slow passage of Los Angeles?...the bass intro of Superabound?...The kind of trompet at the end of Fu Manchu...? The simplicity of Billy Radcliffe? The accelerations of Blast Off? ...too hard for me, sorry I give up. |

Why do people keep making impossible-to-answer posts? Oh well, here goes:
A common staple in many of Frank's songs is sometimes he will start off acoustically, and then go into full-blown electric ("Los Angeles") or vice versa ("Brackish Boy"). I enjoy that. I takes you by surprise. Also enjoy the way he sings the lyrics.
I really enjoy "2 Reelers". It's a song that has all the elements of Frank rolled into one. Fast, hard, slow, soft. I also love "Pie in the Sky". I could just imagine Frank doing this one at a show telling people to "stomp their feet, and clap their hands, get out of their seats and do a little dance"!!! And then following up by saying "THAT'S AN ORRDEEEEERRR!!!!!!!!!!!! The place would go fuckin' nuts.
"Men in Black" kicks ass!!! Especially the last "I'M WATCHIN' MY BACK!!!!!!!! (Frank rips on that part!), where Lyle plays this fuckin' wicked guitar solo. His solo after the first chorus is badass too.
"I gotta Move" is worth it just for the lines "He told me-In Heaven-that every-everything is fine" (with David going "Whoooo" in the background) and "Got coffee, got donuts, got wasted".
"Bad Harmony" is an awesome opener to "Pistelero", "I think I'm starting to Lose it" rocks, and "So. Bay" is a great dark ending to the album.
The "Dog in the Sand" album is definitely in the cream of Frank's crop. Every song's a winner. Same with "Devil's Workshop" and "Black Letter Days" (On the latter, the part at the end of "Cold Heart of Stone", where it gets kind of quiet, and Frank sings "I once had a dog, who ran from his home, but it doesn't even come close, to your cold heart of stone". It's breathtaking. You feel the pain in his voice).
"Show Me Your Tears" is arguably his best, or at least tied with the last 3. He really came full circle on this one. He's always been a sophisticated, mature, in-depth and interesting songwriter/musician, but he is more now than ever.
I can't wait to hear "Honeycomb". BTW, any release info on that? Or "Frank Black Francis"? Or the B-sides/rarities comp? Nothing is mentioned on Amazon.

Oh, I forgot to say why I like these songs.
Um...I love Los Angeles mostly because it's so epic-sounding, I love the contrast between the two sections.
Whatever Happened To Pong? is just such a fucking great, shocking album opener, it has you on the defensive right away, and it sets the tone for this really strange, brilliant album.
Men In Black just has that X factor, I could almost see it being a hit single, if it weren't for the way Frank fucks up the rhythm, which is of course, why we love it. :)
Dog Gone has this really neat little melody thing in the middle, where he sort of swings up and back down. "Then a voice...in a whisper says..."
I love the lyrics of Western Star, plus it just rocks out hard. "Yo soy un pistolero, I'm not shakin' in my boots/I'm ruler of this moon, boy, so if you move, I shoots" Great!
Man of Steel. This has really got to be in my top...three FB songs. Maybe even number one on some days. Just blows me away. Again, it has that epic quality, and I love the strange quality of Frank's voice when he repeats, "There...is a place" and just the odd straightforwardness of that lyric...ooh, chills!
Announcement...is a song probably not known by its title to most people (I actually had to look it up, I couldn't remember what it was called). But it has just a great melody, paired with some really melancholy lyrics, which gets me every time. "Not out of sight...just out of mind, and memory..."
I can't even explain St. Francis Dam Disaster. If you haven't heard it, just listen to it, read the lyrics, if you don't have chills at some point by the end of it, I'll admit defeat; Frank Black may not be for you.
I heard the Catholics play How You Went So Far a few years ago in Seattle, it was the first time I ever saw Frank live, and at the time Black Letter Days was not out yet. Rarely does a song make such an impact when I hear it live for the first time, but I loved the world-weary lyrics. Actually it may not be my fave on BLD, I'd have to think about it...
Fields of Marigold--that weird ascending guitar part! Plus just a gorgeous chorus.
Massif Centrale: "Have some wine, please don't run away..." Again, the odd phrasing, timing, and surprising melody do me in.
Argh, it's driving me crazy! I didn't even mention White Noise Maker, Vanishing Spies, The Swimmer, Jane the Queen of Love, His Kingly Cave...ah, forget it. Thanks for indulging me.

but they are all frank black or pixies songs. and buddy holly
from weezer. nothing beats the solo in "everything is new" after
the chorus(excluding the intro chorus). the first time i heard
that i was paralysed for a few minutes! |

I've been listening to that songs for years now. It's got that acoustic guitar flavor, simple drums, the build up when the bass comes in.
And then the eccentric high notes only Frank would courageously do. |
