Do you wish you could change the way other people drive? What would you like to see people do differently?

I hate it when I'm at a red light ( one where there is a very short green light peroid ) towards the back of the line and the person at the front goes really slow when the light turns green. They just crawl through; they don't care- they know they're going to make it.

Also, there are the people who are constantly stopping to let cars pull out onto the road ( I'm not talking about letting in someone who is really stuck and would otherwise have to wait a long time ). These drivers just keep on stopping and waving cars in so they can feel like a wonderful, kind person. They don't care that they're being generous with MY time- they're addicted to the warm feeling they get when someone waves and mouths "Thank you"- they don't give a shit about the people who are stuck behind them.

Well, I disagree with the second notion (though I've never seen someone stop to let another person in when they'd be able to go as soon as we passed anyway), but my pet peeves are the slow accelerators at green lights definitely. It's like, there's way too many of us to get through on light even now, and you're just gonna plod along slowly...

Also:
1) Stopping in a merge lane/onramp. Dangerous, defeats the purpose, and about the only time I'll ever honk at someone.

2) People getting into the fast/left lane like 2 kms before they even need to turn, thereby either forcing me to get in the right lane with much slower/merging traffic or to sit behind them so they don't have to worry about switching lanes later.

3) Being cut off. Not in a switching lanes sort of way so much as someone clearly misjudging your speed and turning off in front of you. Especially dangerous in the winter here.

4) People who are turning (while you're waiting for them to go by so you can get in) and don't bother to signal.

5) Anyone going well below the speed limit under good conditions.

That's all. :)

I do!
I hate it when I'm driving through my very affluent neighborhood and some little rock and roller goes speeding by me, on the wrong side of the road.
I also hate it when he calls me a retard and doesn't notice my middle finger pointing staight up as I shake my fist at him.

Not really, I was just thinking this is a topic that just about everyone has some ideas for. I think there are a lot of people who have some complaints or examples they'd like to give. Plus, some people might recognize themselves.

Cult of Frank, I know what you mean. And I never honk at people who piss me off- it's just useless, like flipping people off- those things have lost their meaning. I only honk if someone doesn't see me and is about to hit me or back into me.

Also, a lot of people complain about drivers talking on cell phones and want to ban them but I don't agree ( I don't have one ). People get angry when someone who's talking cuts them off, and they blame it on the cell phone. It's not the cell phone- those people would've cut you off anyway- they're just assholes. Some people call talk on a cell phone AND drive well; some people can't.

I think the effort to ban CPs while driving has more to do with class jealousy than safety.

my biggest pet peeve is people who don't merge to the right when they're getting ready to make a right turn. ie. they just slow waaaaay down and then sloooooowly turn, slowing everyone else down. when all the while they could have merged to the right side to let traffic through. that's one thing i actively hate.

don't get me started on the way SUV's drive.

Exactly, floop! Especially when they have plenty of room to do it. How about when they're just about to turn, into gas station for instance, and they stop so they can look around first. You're waiting to get going again and they're still in the way.

I don't agree with that assessment, as everyone has a cellphone. People that get food stamps have cell phones. Nothing personal, but I have noticed that you seem to mention/perceive class distinctions pretty frequently -other times it was an arguable issue, but in this case, I am pretty confident that it is not a matter of people not being able to afford a cell phone and therefore being jealous of others and wanting to legislate against them.

As for crappy and dangerous drivers, there are too many behaviors to mention right now, but I do like Mr. Black's approach to dealing with road rage, bad drivers, and the overall angst of people way too much in a hurry to be civil (writing a good song about it):

"Solid Gold"

Never since I met you
Did you let me in
Even when I let you
You wouldn't call me friend
Pedal to the metal
Mister, it's a sin
Getting so down

I'd give you solid gold
Just for your finger
You get the medal
For getting so down

I guess you didn't see that sky
When the clouds are turned to isles
I was glad when you couldn't hear me
Nervous laughter when you shouted and cursed

I'm not saying I understand
Lord knows who can understand
Life can be an awful plan
And yours it ain't the worst

Here she comes now
In my mirror
Oh, I know how
She is a terror
Now I see her
In her mirror
Wearing a frown

I give you solid gold
Just for your finger
You get the medal
For scariest frown

I guess you didn't see that sky
When the clouds are turned to isles
I was glad when you couldn't hear my
Nervous laughter when you shouted and cursed

Fourthly you're suspect
Thirdly you don't get
Secondly you've got no respect
Finally you're not the first

Okay jimmy,
On a serious note.
How about when you are in the slow lane on the highway, and a car just entering the highway thinks you are supposed to yeild to them?
You're just driving along and here comes some joker onto the highway wondering why we are now driving parrallel to each other in the slow and breakdown lanes. It's because you were supposed to yeild you dum fucker.

apl4eris, I'm not disagreeing with you, I was talking about the perception and a lot of the people who don't own a cellphone still have this idea in their minds that cell phones are only for corporate executives.

You said that I mention class distinctions a lot. I think you might be thinking of someone else. Maybe you're right but I honestly don't remember any times. If you remember the thread, please write back.

I personally don't understand why people have such difficulty talking on cell phones and driving... dialing, yes, not recommended unless there's clear road, you're at a stop, etc. But the act of holding a phone to your ear whilst talking vs. just talking doesn't seem much more complex.

I see more and more frequently that people are pulling over to use their phones, which, if you do find it taxing to drive and talk on the phone, is a smart thing to do for them. For me, it would probably be more dangerous to be pulled over on a busy freeway...

The point is though, they DO have a difficulty with it to therefore it should be banned.

I'm a born & raised New Yorker now living in the southern part of America so no one's been subjected to such a drastic driving-culture shock than me.

By and large, northerners actually have a keen interest to get to their destination with a minimum fuss, probably because of the huge volume of traffic. In other words, they want to get it over with ASAP. Southerners, however, don't have the same kind of traffic so take their sweet time: very often driving well below the speed limit. That is maddening!

I don't hesitate to use my horn liberally. I only wish it was louder so the blind fuck-stick in front of the line-up with a green arrow could hear it.

And rubber-necking? Don't get me started. One time down south a few years ago, traffic was becomming clogged a few thousand feet up the highway. You know that point where it starts to speed up again: the choke-point, as it were? Well, I reached that point yet still could not see what it was that was making people stop & stare! Then I saw it. It was a big, white, 5 gallon empty bucket on the side of the road. I wish I was kidding.

Yes! I had forgetten all about that. There are times when a lane is closed because of on-going road repairs, so everyone has to merge. I'm talking about stop-and-go 2mph for miles. What I don't understand is once people get past that point why they don't fucking take off and go 90.
I'm talking about when there's no one actually working and there's no cop around. If the people who had already merged drove faster, everyone behind them could've gone faster.

An old university pal of mine now lives in the US. He was once stopped by the police after being clocked doing 120 mph on Highway 101 in California. I'm fairly sure that he was driving his girlfriends car (with US plates). Clearly the traffic cop was less than pleased about the excessive speed but became apopletic when faced with a not very contrite Brit who couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. The cop ranted and raved about europeans who think that they can drive at any speed they like.

Anyway my pal was booked but managed to avoid being banged up in the cells for a night. Don't think it slowed him down though.

One of my top 'hates' relates to people who trundle along at about 45 mph on country roads when a speed of say 60-65 mph would be perfectly
ok. You find yourself on their tail looking for a safe opportunity to overtake only to find yourself coming into a village with a 30 mph limit. I always drop back to about 30-35 but Mr Trundle just keeps on going at 45 mph regardless of school children, old age pensioners, hair pin corners. Therefore you never manage to get past.
