Apparently, if you are a current GMail user, you can invite others to join. There is an "Invite A Friend" link in the left hand navigation at the bottom.

If there's a current GMail subscriber that would be so kind as to invite me that would be fantastic! I want to see what all the fuss is about -- and I'm trying to figure out what online e-mail service I should use.

Thanks,

I can't help but wonder what GMail will do for Google. I can't help but wonder how long GMail will actually last, with it's 1GB of storage space. There *has* to be a catch, cause I can think of 101 ways such a system can be (ab)used. I wonder if they can afford to keep it going..."free stuff" on the internet these days is very few and far between, and many "free services" have gone away or gone soft. Bandwidth isn't cheap. I remember a bunch of really cool free services that have gone belly up. Ahh well, wait and see. Google is an amazing company, one of the best the internet offers.

El Barto, you know how they make their money on GMail, right? Here's the catch: they will search the content of your email to decide what ads you'll see. It's already been condemned by privacy advocates the world over...

I'm not too worried about the privacy. E-mail isn't private anyway -- it's sent in plain text over the Internet.

I think it's way overblown as well. So they scan your e-mail to provide you with text link advertisements, so what? Who's to say that Hotmail or Yahoo isn't already doing this?

I'd use it as a massive online storage and transfer system.. You've got 1gb, 30mb limit..woohoo!

They've got a robot that pops relevant ads on the side of the browser, much like what you see on Google...no big deal there. No one's reading it, so your privacy isn't being invaded..

To each his own. I'm stubborn enough to boycott it just because I can.

Google is already partnered with the US Defense Department. They record your searches and site hits, and store the info in a DB with your identity. No lie.

Some people I know refuse to use google because of it. I believe they have been using a French search page. Can't ever remember the name of it though.

What's the big deal. They already have cameras on the highways that track where you drive. Chips implanted in your body since you were a child (aka immunizations) that allow them to track your every move outside of a car. And satellites that can hear every word you speak -- even when inside buildings.

Privacy is an illusion.

Perhaps, but that's arguable in shades of grey. I'm not sure about the immunization chips - you are being sarcastic, yes?

Seriously though, centralized "Iron Triangle" databases and the Patriot Act kinda changed things up a bit, you gotta admit.
