| According to the newest cookingvinyl newsletter, Frank Black and the Catholics - Pistolero will be re-released in May. I know some people have trouble finding this great album, my thrid favorite by FB, so hopefully this will help. No mention if any new tracks will be included, a la the DITS re-release(my fav FB album). I don't expect there to be. |

Uhm Spinart is for US
and Cooking Vinyl is for Europe
it's that easy
Pistolero was on Play it again Sam
and he was dropped there
so....
I think cooking vinyl bought the rights.
The DITS reissue was a Spinart one
while Cooking Vinyl still sold it
So that's the exact same thing but the opposite.

Same price as spinart; not bad, but SpinArt has the LP, which means the cool artwork like 5X the size plus an extra picture of a little kid in a cowboy hat holding a gun.

| I'll be glad to buy this one again. Next to Teenager of the Year, this is my favourite of Frank's records. Yes, Dog in the Sand is beautiful, but it's one of a kind. He'll never do an album like that again. |

Im sorry - but I can't get into Pistolero - I'm open to persuasion but it's the only FB album that leaves me pretty much cold - somebody convince to give it another go!!

| It's just the most "rock" record he's made on his own. It swings. Pistolero is just a good time to me. I won't convince you, but maybe if you hear it again, put a party spin on the experience and maybe you'll appreciate it more. |

That so many people here dislike Pistolero is one of the great mysteries mine eyes hath ever encountered. It's a great, fast-paced rock record. Swing it does, bobcountry.
The Pistolero rerelease looks like Cooking Vinyl is just putting it back in print in Europe, similar to how (I think) they put Cult of Ray and the first FB & the C's album back in print over there. It doesn't look like it's likely to have anything extra. |

More news from Cooking Vinyl re the Pistolero re-issue - once again thanks to the great Bob Allen. There are also two new audio streams (Bad Harmony and Billy Radcliffe) NB - although it says that the re-release date is the 21st of June, Bob says that it has been brought forward to Monday 31st of June. Also, this is from Bob himself:

Monday 21st June sees the re-issue of Pistolero by Frank Black & The Catholics. Originally released in 1999, Pistolero was the second record that Frank Black had recorded live to 2-track.
Says Black: It was meant to be a larger production, but still recorded live to 2-track; we were going to bring in additional musicians to play the parts that normally would have been overdubbed, and my old drummer Nick Vincent (on 'Frank Black' and 'Teenager Of The Year') would be producing and acting as a kind of musical director for all the different musicians, writing charts and arranging, and basically being our Phil Spector; The Catholics would be the band at the core. Well, I kind of fucked up that concept. It ended up just being the core. I finished a batch of songs and got all excited. I called up the band, who all live on the East Coast, and asked if they could come out to L.A. in a few days. I overnighted them a hastily recorded demo of all the songs, some of which they had never heard, and I called Nick Vincent, who lives here in L.A. and begged him to get together with me the very next morning to hear all my precious, pretty little numbers that we were going to record the following week sans orchestra. The recording went smoothly, done during two sessions totalling 10 days, longer than Frank Black And The Catholics which was a four-day session. The longer session allowed us to play the new material over and over while the tape ran. About half the songs were grown out of riffs and chord progressions that we'd been playing around with for months or even years, so it wasn't all new material, except to our new guitarist, RICH GILBERT (EX-HUMAN SEXUAL RESPONSE, EX-ZULUS, EX-CONCUSSION ENSEMBLE), who had only just started playing with us. But the situation suited Rich just fine. He is a wild, spontaneous player, who Scott Boutier (drums), Dave McCaffrey (bass) and I had been admiring for years. Nick Vincent managed to squeeze in some great intuitive thought and extremely subtle direction and knew instantly which of the many takes we did should be on the record; so the sessions simply consisted of us playing, Billy Bowers recording, and Nick Vincent cracking the whip; no video gaming going on at a Catholics session.
I know it doesn't fit in with what's happening in the charts, on the radio, in the typical, well-produced scene, but we love this whole live recording thing. And it seems appropriate for a band like us so stuck on the guitar, which by the way is a Spanish instrument that has been around since the early 1600's for those naysayers who are so quick to damn the guitar every time there is an innovation in automated music (hey, the metronome has been with us since the early 1800's). Personally, I think pop music grown out of a computer is a great advancement that brings more people to music, both artists and patrons. But is rock dead? Such a negative place from which to ask such a pointless question. Who knows how long music has been with us? That is a true mystery.

some absolute stinkers in amongst the 8 or so gems....
my copy of pistolero which i bought 2nd hand in new zealand has a concert stub from a gig in California in it...a well travelled cd i'm thinking...

Man, Frank has a way of stating his views on music that just win me over every time! The man is a musical guru, no doubt about it
the thing- Pistolero is a great album...just a raunchy rock record. It's a little more light-hearted, a little less cerebral, than a lot of other Frank albums. Or rather, the cerebral elements are there...but they are just buried in very distorted guitars! I think you should give it another chance, it will no doubt grow on you
benji- I think the album flows as a whole really well and I rock out to every fuckin song! but i'm just curious what you find to be the weak points?

well pistolero was my fav frank album for years until i rediscovered dog in the sand, but i still could not really get into any of the songs from after 'so hard to make things out' which is quite possibly my fav frank song of all time, to 'so bay' which is quite possibly my second fav frank song of all time.
all the others are gems....

i'm the opposite, i think that block of songs is what makes the album great. it is my least favorite FB album as well, but becuase of the lack of diverse songwriting. that being said "85 weeks," "billy radcliffe," "i want rock and roll," and "western star" make it a must own. saying its my least favorite FB album is like saying its the worst of the best.

| This album, even after many, many listens, still blows me away. It's one of a few CDs I occasionally turn on just to jam along with on guitar. Just turn Rich's speaker down a bit and let'er rip! |

pistolero is the ultimate FB&C underdog record. the critics either slam it or bypass it entirely. this alone should tell you that it's a good spin. i think it represents an interesting moment in time for the band, when frank really stopped overthinking his songwriting and began exploring a much harder, straightforward sound. some say there isn't enough of frank's signature quirky style on the disc, but without pistolero, it's hard to imagine frank being able to transition into the "exile on main street" stage on DITS or anything since.
hey, there's no law saying you have to like everything. as a fan, though, i would re-visit the records you don't like as much every now and then. you may be surprised and end up liking it with a different perspective. |

Man I love this album. And the 99 tour was incredible, too. Western Star and I Want Rock n Roll just rip it up every time. YO SOY UN PISTOLERO! I mean, it waw quite a thrill for me to hear Frank singing in spanish like that again after (I'm pretty sure) not touching it since the hey day of the Pixies.

As far as I know it's pretty easy to get your hands on Pistolero in the UK... Ive seen it in alot of places, however it is usually over priced.
Going slightly off topic (as I don't want to start a thread on this), has anyone heard a heavier version of I'll Be Blue??? I recently downloaded DITS (I have purchased every FB album ever released, but only have minidisk recordings here in China) the other day, and when I listened to it I noticed that I'll Be Blue was electric and alot rockier..... anyone got this version, or know anything about it?

I too am baffled about why someone would dismiss this album. Sure, there are a couple of weak tracks---Skeleton Man, for instance, but even that I like---but most FB and Pixies albums have filler. If you're as prolific as he is, they can't all be gems.
Pistolero is more balls-to-the-wall, more Neil Youngish and Crazy Horse-like (listen to the beginning of So Hard to Make Things out, which sounds like pure Zuma/Ragged Glory) and plain rock and roll than the rest. Personally, I prefer FB the rock star over Fb the country-western troubador. I'll take Pistolero any day of the week over Black letter Days, Devil's Workshop and SMYT. Ranks about number four or five on my Fb solo album list... |

I don't know, honestly, I really liked Pistolero... I think it was key in the transition to where we are now. Unlike some others, I find it hard to rank them, I mean, it's like apples and oranges... this is an artist that had the means to do things his way, and see where it takes him. And here we are. Each album has it's place, and the facts that they are so diverse and that few of us agree on which are the best is a testament to his quality of diversity and his willingness to be creative and not just keep pumping out the same old sounds. Its really why we're all fans, right? We can get that cookie cutter crap off the radio whenever we want. What am I rambling about?
And yeah, how can you NOT like the line "Yo Soy Un Pistolero, I'm not shaking in my boots" I'd go on, as it is all good, but you all know how it goes. |
