Heh, yeah, I just sent Jake an email with that too.
He's selling a WEBSITE LINK to DiscLive. I figure anyone that buys that gets what they deserve, but I'd still like to see this guy get shutdown.

At the same time, he explicitly tells people that they might still get some of the CDs for a decent price instead of buying them on ebay...
Now, is the IQ necessary to find the web page once you know the name of the company higher than the one necessary to use ebay and buy the link?
I think that this is quite an interesting question...
The guy seems to assume that only one person might be interested, unless his own IQ is not high enough to do Dutch auctions. |

He actually has about 10 auctions going on like this if you search his auctions.

I'm tempted to put up an exact copy of the auction, but with the URL right in there (and a high minimum bid so no one would bid).
I just wonder if I'd get in trouble with eBay, though (they might think I'm just advertising for DiscLive). |

I wanted to do that too but he and other people who are selling cds can bid and leave you negative feedback if you do like a 1 cent auction or something. But a super high auction might work, I wonder if ebay refunds your fees if no one buys it though . I can't remenmber exactly but I think you have to pay a percentage of the final price to them.

lol, I just put "pixies live cd" into google and disclive was the first thing that popped up. I thought it might be like the star wars dvd bootlegs that people used to auction a link to. It took me forever to find the site that sold them so with that I could at least see why people were willing to pay the money.

you should put up an auction that promises to link the buyer to his auction, which in turn promises to give the url where you can buy live Pixies discs. |

matt,
Here's the scoop on selling on eBay. They charge you an initial fee based on you opening price and then they take a percentage of your final selling price. If your item does not sell, then you can relist it. If it sells the second time they refund your listing price for the second auction.
Starting Price, Opening Value or Reserve Price (US$) InsertionFee US$0.01 - US$0.99 US$0.30 US$1.00 - US$9.99 US$0.35 US$10.00 - US$24.99 US$0.60 US$25.00 - US$49.99 US$1.20 US$50.00 - US$199.99 US$2.40 US$200.00 -US$499.99 US$3.60 US$500.00 and up US$4.80
Closing Value US$ Final Value Fee US$0 - $25 5.25% of the closing value US$25 - $1,000 5.25% of the initial US$25 ($1.31),plus 1.75% of the remaining closing value balance (US$25.01 to $1,000) Over US$1,000 5.25% of the initial US$25 ($1.31), plus 0.75% of the initial US$25 - $1000 $26.81), plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance (US$1000.01 - closing value)
It also costs an extra $0.05 per auction to use the buy it now feature. Plus the guy used listing subtitles, which is another $0.50 per auction.
Here's what I'll do. I'll keep an eye on his auctions and if anyone bids, I'll send them the link hopefully before they get a chance to pay.
(holy crap, this guy has 21 auctions like this, that means he spent $18.90 to set this up.)

I don't know if it was wise or whatever, but I just did the "ask this seller a question" thing and told him he was a dickhead and that he should get a job etc. etc. etc.

A good way to "punish" him would be this:
If anyone here can bear the brunt of a negative on their feedback, or if someone who hasn't used eBay is willing to sign up, this guy's pristine 100% positive feedback could easily be tarnished by one rogue winner. I am willing to sponsor the person for the $6 or whatever. I have my own selling account, with my own 100% positive, so I won't use that one. Anyway--just a thought.

I hadn't noticed it's BuyItNow. So whoever has an account they can sacrifice, tell me about it and I will win the auction and pay for it, then leave negative feedback.
Oh yeah, and his listing is false, unless he knows something we don't know. It's $30 total to ship it by Priority Mail. So I could actually win the auction, get the info, do a claim with PayPal since his price quote is false, and get the dough back.

I'm not signed up for eBay. I'd try it. I don't have a credit card or debit card, though. Do I need one? If I started up an account and it got screwed because of this, could I start another account, only a good one?

I honestly don't know the "intra-eBay" repercussions. There's no real personal risk, but if you plan on getting a legit eBay account in the next few months, I don't know how it would work. The guy would likely start you with a negative feedback, which would effectively ruin the account.

That would be cool if he got negative feedback.
But, i dunno, you might want to wait to see if disclive.com reports him first.

Why doesn't somebody set up a yahoo email address, then setup a new ebay account, use Buy it Now on ALL HIS AUCTIONS, stiff him on all of 'em, (obviously), then hammer him with 21 or however many negative feedbacks?!? He'd also probably be screwed on the fees, since the items sold. How much more fucked could he get?
Please, somebody do this. Maybe I will, even.
If you set up an account explicitly for the purpose of being a sacraficial lamb, I don't think there would be any real-world comeback, even if you have a a real ebay account (assuming you don't use any real info on the fake one). The point is to end all of his listings at once, and then leave him as many negative feedbacks as auctions. Presumably he'll return the favor, but it matters not. You don't actually have to pay him to leave feedback! And then he'd have to be REALLY fucking dense to relist... |

Y'know, I though I'd take the opportunity to let everyone know about some of the abstract concepts I will shortly be marketing on ebay for reasonable fees:
"A Secret" "A Compliment" "Kind Thoughts about you and yours" "An Insult" "Encouragement" "A lie" "Discouragement" "Love, for an Experiment"
Ebay really does have everything. |

Guys, listen, don't get so worked up! People will sell absolutely anything on eBay and if anyone is stupid enough to buy this link well, they are just very stupid! Chill out. The seller's also a complete idiot but that's life.

johnc,
That was hilarious.
I just checked in on our asshole of the day and this is what you get when you click the link to his auction
"Invalid Item The item you requested ( 4010172796 ) is invalid, still pending, or no longer in our database. Please check the number and try again. If this message persists, the item has either not started and is not yet available for viewing, or has expired and is no longer available."
Looks like eBay figured it out....

He responded to my email. I'll admit, my email was very juvenile, and unprofessional. Something along the lines of, "get a job you effing loser, quit trying to screw people, I hope you don't actually like the Pixies because I'd be embarassed for them etc. etc." I just kind of went off. Anyway, here was his response:
'My question to you is: Why would someone pay $50-60 for an album they can buy straight from the manufacturer for $27? Because they are ignorant, stupid or maybe both.'
I still think he's a douche (copyright Jacka)

If he was truly concerned about these people paying too much for the cds when they are available from the manufacturer, he should email the people who are bidding on the discs and give them the website address. This is simple to do on eBay. The bidders can then retract their bids if they so desire.
So, I agree... supreme douchebag.

I fucked up a few people's auctions for these. I contacted some of the people bidding on the cds with this:
I'm doing a public service to people who are getting screwed on ebay for these pixies shows. The show you're bidding on is still available (as are many others) at disclive. Don't let these assholes rip you off. Here is the link: http://disclive.com/artist.php?artistid=8

Way to go matt,
Have you been getting any feedback from the people you have warned?
I saw cds for the Winnipeg show going for almost $200 US on eBay when disclive still had copies @ $25 US plus shipping.
Cheers,
