Nirvana's Kurt Cobain had said he was afraid people would hate them because they'd think they were ripping off the Pixies ...
that being said has the Nirvana/Pixies storyline invaded the Pixies guitarwork ?
listen to the Minniapolis show's version of UMass ... at the 70 second or so mark the guitars are more "Smells Likes Teen Spirit" then they on the studio record ... i havent heard UMass live since Nirvana came out but i'd never heard the song played like this
is this a power of suggestion thing where the Joey now plays the riffs like Smells Like Teen Spirit subconsciencly or have the guitars always been buried on the studio cd ?
i'm prob. not explaining this properly but the live 2004 version of Umass has those "Smells Like Teen Spirit" riffs i'd never heard before |

Nah, it was always there. It's a little easier to see since they play it a bit faster live, I think...

Lately I get nauseous any time I see 'Nirvana' and 'Pixies' in the same sentence.

Never understood this one. I see NO similarities. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is mostly minor chords, and "U-Mass" is all major chords.

It's been done to death but I think it's a real dividing point between long-time Pixies fans and the newer fans. The 2nd generation fans love to bring up the Nirvana stuff because its how they first heard of the band--where they made their first big connection to the Pixies. They were 'Teen Spirit' fans first and are now Pixie fans by way of the media's relentless linking of the two. |

i dont think that's true ... i was into the Pixies before and never heard the connection when Nirvana came out ... but at the time i thought every band was ripping off the Pixies ... it was just nice to hear Kurt give them props ... |

rockmusic84: As someone who talks musicology, I am surprised you never understood the similarities between U-Mass and Smells LTS. It's not only about the chord types and notes played. It's about the rhythm and attack that Cobain got from Santiago/Black. They are virtually identical. Just change keys and make a major a minor here or there.

The Pixies swing it a bit more. I can almost certainly thank Nirvana for "turning me on" to the Pixies. This was '93 or so. I may be a 2nd generation fan, but I don't see myself being a "newer" fan...
Then again, the Pixies "turned me on" to Pere Ubu...and so on. |

I'm a 2nd generation Pixies fan and Nirvana did not turn me on to the Pixies.
Actually a friend turned me on to Frank Black and then Frank Black turned me on to the Pixies. Kind of weird.
Just quit a cult / going through withdrawal |

Actually kottke, Trompe Le Monde was released a couple of months after Nevermind, so I guess the Pixies ripped off Nirvana |

"Trompe Le Monde" was released early October '91, "Nevermind" was released late October '91. Either way, both of these albums were probably completed WAY before they were released, so I don't think anyone was ripping off anyone. And kottke, the way Cobain "attacks" his guitar may be identical, but the rhythm is more uptempo than U-MASS, and he doesn't use distortion throughout the entire song. Nirvana and The Pixies were/are 2 different bands. Let's just end this argument/discussion/whatever once and for all. I like Nirvana just as much as the next fan on here, but Christ, you people are beating a dead dog!!!
Maybe you all should stop listening to "Nevermind". "Bleach" and "In Utero" are much better examples of their rawness, and they have awesome songs. But I suppose you'd still say there was some sort of a connection with The Pixies ("Well, Albini engineered "In Utero"..."). Just let it go already.
Not trying to ruffle any feathers, but I'm fuckin' sick of hearing this. Dave, maybe you can make another forum just for this topic. You can call it "Smells like The Pixies". "Discuss bands who are remotely similar to or who were influenced by the works of the Pixies." :)

I honestly think if you take any Nirvana song it could easily be either a Sonic Youth song or The Pixies. Smells Like Teen Spirt sounds like a mix between UMass, Gouge Away and Where Is My Mind? I do like Nirvana, but Kurt did nothing new. I think I've said this many, many, many times.
We say we care, but look away. |

I've heard Joey work in 'Purple Haze' at the end of 'Into The White' on an old bootleg tape. |

News Flash: Nirvana admittedly ripped off the Pixies sound when making Nevermind. And Cobain has spoke many times of creating their whole sound based on the Pixies. This is not an argument. This is what Nirvana members have all said. What's wrong with talking about it? I think it's interesting to notice where songs and bands came from and what their roots are. If you get flustered by this or are angered or something, take a deep breath and do some yoga. This is not an attack on anybody or anything, so no need to take it personally if someone says a band copied another band.
I like to talk music, and I see it all as being interconnected. Haven't you seen the tree on the blackboard in School of Rock? :)

I have seen other trees like that in rock/blues history books. It gets pretty haphazard after the first couple generations, though, since there is so much cross-pollenization.
