And so, the answer to your question, the reason why we're addicted - (but why this site?!!?)
Internet addiction Infatuation with the Internet has taken over the U.S.: newspapers, radio, TV and magazines are constantly talking about it. Businesses are scrambling to get a part of the action. Even on Wall Street, every week a new company is created or an old company revives due to involvement with the Internet. But nowhere has the Internet had a greater impact than in the homes of America.
It seems everyone is clamoring to get connected to the Internet and then, once they are connected, they get hooked. Think of it as cable television with 4.3 billion channels.
People are waking up every morning and the first thing they do, before coffee or a shower, is turn on the computer and log in to the Internet. They go to work or school and log in there. People are skipping lunch or eating at their desks in order to have more time online. Even when they get home, no longer does TV take precedence, but the computer has become the source of entertainment. And with the Internet, the entertainment doesn't stop with prime time.
At midnight, just as these "cyber-surfers" are thinking about going to bed, they connect with someone from Asia or Australia who is just waking up.
Meanwhile, the world around these people becomes less important. Food, personal cleanliness, relationships, even sleep are forgotten in the virtual world of cyberspace, the Internet. Work or school is less about getting things done but more about taking advantage of the fast, free Internet connection. More and more of their conversations, social activities and even personal relationships are through electronic cables rather than face to face.
How does someone stop who finds the Internet taking too much of their life?
Turn off the graphics: Many people are addicted to the pictures associated with locations on the Internet. Turn off the graphics and the plain text begins to get dull.
Reduce your bandwidth: Change the setting for the modem to a slower speed. At a slower speed, downloading Internet information takes longer and starts to get boring.
Read the books by William Gibson: William Gibson wrote "Neuromancer", "Johnny Mnemonic" and coined the word "cyberspace". By reading his books, you will get away from your computer and see a world where the Internet is more powerful and a lot scarier than it is today.

Nueromancer is a great book. I'm reading his new one, "Pattern Recognition" right now. It's his first book set in the present, and it's very engaging. He's quite a gifted linguist and a great story teller. |

yeah I skimmed too:) And I don't see how turning off graphics would help. Sure you'll get sucked in a little less often but what if you're addicted to internet porn? Turning off the graphics is a poor deterrent because you'll know you can just turn them back on. Same with bandwidth.
