Is this reunion temporary? Is this tour the last? Is this the first and last chance´I´ll ever get to see the Pixies?

The Velvet Underground fell out before they'd even finished their reunion tour.

One shot deal, people. Telling yourself anything else would just be folly. They decided this reunion would make sense at this point in time (least of all in a monetary sense) and pigs do indeed fly now. That doesn't mean that they are back together for good, it just would not seem logical for Frank to give up on all the material and music that he has made as a solo artist. Lesson of the Day: see them while you can! |

I almost hope it's a one shot deal. I hope they finish the tour so everyone has a chance to see them (and so I can see them again in the fall). But, I'm not hoping for a new record. I can't think of any reunion records that are ever any good. The reason these shows are so good now is because the music they're playing is timeless. However with 12 years of not playing together, I think new music would either sound like it came from 1992, (which might not feel the same today as it did then), or it wouldn't even sound like the Pixies as they've all spent the last 12 years on completely different endeavors (musical and otherwise) which have changed them as people and as musicians. This is probably a bad example, but Jane's Addiction takes co-honors with the Pixies for changing my life with Nothing's Shocking. Needless to say I was excited about the new record this last year (even though Eric Avery wasn't playing--at least it wasn't Flea). Has anyone heard this record? It's a piece of shit. Probably one of the biggest (musical) disappointments of my life. I'm not saying the Pixies aren't capable of making a new record that would be good. I'd just much rather leave it to the Pixies music we have, a new FB solo record every 6 months, a new Breeders record every ten years, and a memory or two from some awesome reunion shows instead of a new record (that I hold my breath for) that sucks balls and leaves a shitty last impression of a great band.

Yeah, there are so many different ideas about how people think the reunion should go. I see exactly where ShaunWestphal is coming from, and I agree with him on some points, but disagree with him on others. I'm treating this reunion tour as though it's a one shot deal, but I'm hoping for more. I'm listening to the new version of In Heaven and I'm filled with an incredible longing for a new Pixies album. Yeah, there's a chance it could turn out like ass, but listening to the delicious sound of the new In Heaven, I'd hate to see them not give it a shot. And if they did, that wouldn't mean Frank couldn't crank out a solo album every six months and the Breeders couldn't do what they need to do as well. Know what I mean. It really comes down to personal tastes and opinions. Like I've stated numerous times before, I'll support whatever they decide to do. From what I've seen at the first two shows and read from the other shows, those guys are having a great time together, and I'd like to hear them having a great time together in a recording studio. You know, the playfullness of Surfer Rosa combined with their talent that has accrued over the last decade or so. Yeah, the music could be a disappointment, but the effort I believe would be commendable.

I'd settle for a CSNY type of deal. Frank (playing the role of Neil Young) keeps artistically expanding, constantly releasing new material. The rest get back together every coule of years for a "reunion" tour when they need a few bucks. |

The Pixies improved with each record. But I fear that they may hit the wall if they try to improve on TROMPE LE MONDE. That would be an impossible task, so my thinking is why bother. They already made the perfect album. They should spend their free time re-teaching Kim all the parts so that they can play those great songs on tour. |

I agree Prozacrat...
The Pixies and its management need to decide where to take this. What is best for the band as people and musicians is what is best for the fans.
I think alot of fans are hungry for "more" but the band will make the right choice of what is considered good for the band’s brand equity. They have already set a high bar for themselves and I could see this could be intimidating.
My hope is the band has fun with this and quits when it stops being fun... if a reunion every 5 years or so is what's fun for the band that's great. If it means recording an album every year and touring every other... that is cool too. As long as the band is having fun, the fans will also.
It's pretty apparent that the band is still feeling out the waters. But they must determine a long term vision, soon. They have agreed that the objective is to make money, but with out a business plan to get there will be missed opportunities for the band and the fans alike.
This said: The Pixies are the greatest band ever. We all wish them happiness and success in whatever they decide to do. We thank them for the wonderful…cool music they have brought us!!!!

I would love for them to come up with a new album. Frank's songwriting is still unbelievable and I haven't lost faith in any of the other Pixies either. No reason to believe that it wouldn't be extraordinary.
I love Kim. |

I personally wouldn't want to rush the group/management into deciding what to do in the long run quite yet. They should test the waters for a little while longer. Yeah, I'd love to hear another album, but here's what I fear could happen if they rush things: a few weeks from now they're still having a great time and have even tossed around a new song or two. They agree to do a new album and are even signed on to some label to do so. They're all feeling great about it until the European tour rolls around. Half way through they can't stand each other but feel like they have to do the album. They don't have fun doing it and people's fears of a crap album become reality. Though I doubt that'd be the case, I'd hate to see them cornered into something like that. If this fall rolls around and they say "Hey, let's make an album," I'll be first in line to get a copy the morning it's released. Well, I'd be there no matter what. I'd also like to see Frank & the Catholics sneak in a short tour before that to support the release of the two b-sides albums, and Honeycomb.

Prozacrat,
I totally agree with you.. I just want the band to be happy and not pressured.
What I meant about the business strategy is that be band are great artists but they don't have a long term business plan. This plan could have scenarios such as if we still like each other after the tour... if we want to do our own thing after the tour...then how do we market ourselves.
A business plan will help guide them and focus them and it doesn't need to hurt or pressure the creative process. It just aligns them and helps put the business aspects on auto pilot so they can focus on the creative.
It's hard for a business to survive without strategy and in a way The Pixies are a business, too. Ok enough of my capitalistic ramblings. I’ll shut up….

There's a lot of world out there and they're doing their best. Kudos to giving concert-starved Western Canada something to envy though. There's a lot of terrific audiences out there (Calgary, Winnipeg and Regina in particular) that don't get to see anything even though there are some pretty rabid fans out there. Modest Mouse learned it last year and quickly came back. Hopefully word spreads even further after this Pixies tour.
As for an album: if one gets made and released I will certainly buy it. Frank Black has been consistenly kicking my ass with his albums over the years and I'm sure new Pixies will be just the same. The greatness of Pixies is definitely due to their time and circumstance, so it won't be the second coming of a mighty rock band. I doubt it would blow the sheer quantity of goats that the abysmal Jane's Addiction album did (just got a Jane Says ringtone for my phone though. sexy). That being said, after I buy it I will probably adore it. It won't be Trompe or Bossanova, but it will be new Pixies and I won't complain. This is how legendary bands are made. They come out, help spark a movement and then vanish. Do I really have to mention 'you-know-who'? The Stone Roses is one hell of an album, Second Coming not so much but it still helps add to the myth. All I know is I'm excited as hell about the tour itself and seeing them twice. Anything that comes after this is gravy.
Don't think I can replace my 'Death To The Pixies' shirt with a 'Pixies Sell Out' shirt though. |

Prozacrat... you ain't dumb .. what 'eva One angry dwarf are they're any Pixies ringtones...I never look because it takes a million years to look at all of 'em.
Ok what do you guys think of 'dis... they can pull a Celline Dion. They can headline in Vegas 2-3 months a year. The fans could go see them. Then they can do all their cool solo stuff too...that way it's best of both worlds. (Yes I am 1/2 sarcastic and 1/2 serious )
Not sure what casino they would preform at maybe the Hard Rock ???
Perhaps they could alternate...every other year Vegas...every other year Monte Carlo for all the fans in Euroupe too???
Darn... I think I would move to Vegas if this were the case!!! |

She was trying to do a southwestern-desert-type thing for a crowd of seniors from Las Cruces. I was frickin' shocked. The band did an arrangement that left out the dissonant guitar parts. It sounded like Muzak, basically. With Celine Dion's voice. Ouch. |

I could see the Pixies playing at the Hard Rock in Vegas. I saw Primus at the Joint there last fall and it was quite splendiferous. I could also see them playing the Palms. They also have this little club there who's name I can't rememeber or pronounce where they bring in no-name bands to do either full band stuff or short acoustic sets and they produce DVDs of them. Pretty neat setup if you ask me. I'd love to see the Pixies do something like that.

Frankly, about this reunion being long-term or not, I do not think that this is an issue right now.
At the end of their tour, in more than 6 months from now, they will definitely KNOW if they want to go on together or to go back to their separate ways. If the alchemy was good enough, then they will have some new material in the work and will decide to make a new album.
There is nothing more telling than a long tour to settle this kind of issue. |
