Their new album should be out sometime this summer. The current working title is "The Spine."

"Au Contraire," "Memo To Human Resources," and "Am I Awake?" are all really great songs, and there's a cool new version of the old B-side "Ant" on there as well. Definitely a worthwhile purchase, and it has me looking forward to The Spine.

Here is an article discussing The Spine. It sounds like it's going to be short ("a little over half an hour"), but hopefully it'll still be really cool.

The last time I "saw" them I drove seven hours to see them play at an in store promo performance in a book store. They were promoting their children's book and it was just the two John's, but the place filled up before we got there and we had to stand outside and could barely hear the show. But I finally got to meet Linnell, which was a first for me.
I'm very excited for this new album.

I went to an in-store at a Borders in Philadelphia, but had to leave without meeting the Johns, unfortunately. John Flansburgh did answer a question of mine at a session following the Philadelphia screening of Gigantic, however.

Of the new stuff they played, "Wearing a Raincoat" sounded like an instant classic. Very groovy midtempo, very "rock". It's not a full band of Dans anymore, by the way, it appears that the drummer Dan left. I didn't catch the replacement's name, which Flans only nentioned about 100 times, but he was excellent. During the "Spin the Dial" segement, they picked up "Oye Como Va", which they reproduced faithfully, of course, but then Linnel kept going into the riff after every song for the rest of the set. Hilarious!

Never really gotten into the Giants, though I did listen to Apollo 18 and Factory Showroom quite a bit during high school. They're great songwriters and musicians but they're singing is so incredibly nasal and nerdy, to a degree that often hinders me from fully appreciating them. I do like them, though, but Ween was always a bit more my type of thing when it comes to wacky, genre hopping duos.

I should add, one of my favorite recordings by TMBG was their cover of Cub's "New York City." That's a great sounding version.
