Three words justify any flubbing - WARM UP SHOWS.

-------------------------------------
Three steps to a better life:
1) Find the off button on your television.
2) Push it.
3) Leave it like that for awhile.

Yeah, there are some holes in the analogy such as that, but I didn't feel that disproved or took away from it. Logically speaking, it'd really be hard to do a warm up tour for free, even if they are just warming up. However, if you take into consideration the fact that you could shell out $120 on a ticket from Ticketmaster to go see a crap band's finished product or around $35 to see the Pixies find their feet, that seems like a pretty discounted price to me.

Kim can "warm up" on her time. She should actually play her instrument on my time (and my dollar).

I don't see how you can justify complaining about Kim warming up on a warm up tour, though. This IS her time to warm up. That's exactly what April 13th through Coachella were for: warming up. We're paying for the priviledge to see them do just that. From the beginning these dates have been advertised as "warm up" shows, and not a polished finished product. And I realized why Kim has been having a harder time catching up than the other guys. She's spent the last decade playing a six string guitar. Yeah, she's played a bit of bass here or there on demos and whatnot, but she's had to retrain her hands to handle a bass guitar for this tour. Frank's playing the same guitars he's been playing for years, as has Joey. Dave hasn't touched the drums for years, so he said, but at least he hasn't been playing mostly hand percussion for ten years and had to find his footing again behind a regular kit. Know what I'm saying? I play both guitar and bass guitar. I hadn't played my bass in several months, then last fall I started playing bass for a friend's band. I had to get accustomed to the longer neck and greater distance between the frets, and it wasn't the easiest thing to do. I can only imagine playing as little bass as Kim has for this period of time and then having to start stretching my fingers out all over again. When Coachella rolls around, then I'll expect to hear a finished product. Until then, for those of you who don't want to pay money to see the Pixies warm up, don't see them until after Coachella.

I don't really care if Kim is flubbing or not. She has been through enough crap and it was just great to see her on stage with Frank and the guys again. She looked great and she looked happy. I don't know about the rest of the shows, but in Boise they all seemed to be having a great time. She may have been off a little, but that is Kim. She is the cool older sister who you never understand, but love her anyway.

As a guitarist who also plays bass, I concur. There is a definite adjustment time between instruments, especially when you've become accustomed to playing one for a long period of time. The way you hold down the strings for intonation is different, the feel of the neck is way different, and the action of your picking hand is WAY WAY different. Give the woman a break! I'm sure she'll be kicking ample ass in another week or two.

In Eugene 4/28, Kim said "Was anybody here last night? I think I'm doing way better tonight."

I would like to second, third or fourth the "Warm Up Tour" sentiments...$25-35 is not exactly premium ticket price these days...

in watching some of the live shows from the DVD and them play in spokane, i thought they were better in spokane than on the video for the most part...but maybe thats just because i was there. and i'd rather see the band having fun and being laid back than hitting every single note on time like robots. I'll listen to the album for that!

bop.

haha this is a great thread.
i'm sure kim's chronic alcoholism has niothing to do with her looking as though she's unaware of her surroundings at the new shows right?
don't get me wrong, she's beautiful and i definately have her puppies, but MAN THE SAUCE!!

She's just balancing out against Joey, who's TOO aware of his surroundings. Watch him! Eyes darting. Every time somebody moves he sees it. And everybody's always moving!!! He seems.... pleasantly parainoid? If that's a term.

I think that the small mistakes makes the shows more memorable.

Second that!

I used to have the best Breeders bootleg, think it was Chicago or something (long since lost sadly)
And Kim has to literally teach Kelley the chords to "Happiness is a Warm Gun" - she completely "flubs" but it's such a moment.

Frankly, with a smile like Kim's who would honestly care if she played the darn bass with oven gloves on....

My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free
