I have this friend that is a first year nutrition major at Cal Poly. Lately she gets annoyed that I am often more informed than her on different aspects of nutrition (her words not mine). Or that I know of other ideas than the conventional nutrition she is being taught. Today, I tried to give her some coconut oil under the guise that it was good to eat (EXTRA VIRGIN non refined). She started arguing with me about fats and touting the benefits of Canola oil. One thing she said was that Canola oil comes from the Canola flower (It's actually genetically modified rapeseed oil).
She was telling me how healthy the oil was to consume. I had a different opinion based on what I had read. I also don't trust much of what science alters then turns around and says "hey kids, eat this". I had forgotten a lot of the details on what I had read about Canola, but I knew rapeseed was toxic in it's original form. I knew some scientist in Canada had found a way to detoxify the oil and created a market for the new Canadian oil (CAN-OLA) .
I ended up doing a search on the web to find out more on the mysterious Canola flower. Here's something interesting I found: http://www.karinya.com/canola.htm
Interesting stuff also read up on the dangers of soy. No mention of the Canola flower though. Hmm?
My friend refused to read it. She said it angers her to learn anything that goes against what she is learning in class because she is spending all this money on her education and only wants to hear what she's taught by her professors. She is not interested in any other sources of information than that.
I told her her closed mindedness will fit in very well with conventional medicine's ideals.
She stormed out of my place all pissed off.
One thing this guy mentions is organic peanut butter being better than conventional peanut butter.
I've read that supposedly some organic peanut butter / peanuts are not good to eat because of a mold that grows on them. It produces aflatoxin. It's in organic peanut butter in particular because it contains all the peanut oil. Conventional name brands replace there's with Canola.
Here's some info on aflatoxin.

I am exhausted by all the things that are bad for us. I can't keep up! I just try to eat as "naturally" (whatever that means) as I can, but sometimes you just can't get anything but what is there, ya know?

Aside from all of that, I know that hydrogenated oils are particularly bad and then the whole Transfat madness. My mom brought me Oreos' and I am going to make her take them back with her when she leaves.

Aye trans-fatty acids and hydrogenated fats (TFA's are a product of hydrogenation) are 100% bad news. No doubt about it, and US labelling will display how much TFA's are in products in the very near future. (Same with Canada.)

The canola oil you find in most grocery stores is really bad. It's one of the most processed oils, and they do a million things to it before it hits the shelf, stripping it of anything healthful. I've stopped buying canola oil.

I stick with cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil for just about everything.

Coconut butter is not inherently bad, and can be beneficial, as long as it's not hydrogenated.

Plant-based saturated fats are absorbed and handled differently in the body than animal-based saturated fats, and don't clog arteries, etc. (Unless they're hydrogenated, in which case they're worse.)

For baking, coconut butter is probably the most ideal fat, as it doesn't break down as much under high temps. I'm baking stuff (cookies, etc..) at 300 degrees instead of 350, because at 350 you start to form a lot more TFA's, where-as at 300 fats remain more stable. Just leave stuff in the oven a little longer.

*phew*

Tea oil is (supposedly) even better for you than olive oil - very good for stir frying and high-temp cooking, or anything that you would not want an olive oil taste in. There aren't many distributors for this yet, but I think it will catch on quickly.

Myself, I fear corn syrup even more than I fear canola oil.

You know, i'm not that crazy about hemp, i'll take flax any day. And neither are suitable for cooking. =)

Tea oil..never heard of it! Looks promising..

Oh, and for Oreo's, there are two brands of *vegan* *organic* oreo's out there - 'Country Choice' and 'Newman's Own' both have these, and they free of processed sugar and hydrogenated oils.

And they taste exactly like oreo's. Amazing.

I don't think you can call rice cakes "Oreos." :)

And as for Trans fat, I believe companies have until 2006 to comply (as in, having Trans Fat listed on nutrition labels). Some companies already have, like Frito-Lay.

I think that can only be burned, not consumed.
