My mother seems to think that men tend to enjoy the sound of a woman's voice and women mens vocals. Is there any truth to this?
I don't really fit into that theory. I suppose that my favorite beautiful music is sung by women but my absolute favorite music is performed bt men. I cherish a lot of my female vocalists but why is it that I think men tend to make the best music overall?
Anyhoo, which voices to you most enjoy? And specify your own sex too to help figure out this theory.
Oh yeah, I be a boy.

Both. It's not even a choice for me.

Oh I'm male by the way, I have the appropriate physical apparatus and sometimes leave empty containers back in the fridge.

My top 2 vocalists are Kristin Hersh & Robert Wyatt. A loud woman and a soft-voiced man. Not that it means anything.
I also like the voices of Robert Fisher (Willard Grant Conspiracy), Bowie, Vic Chesnutt (can't say he's got a "great voice" as singing standards go, but I love what he does with it), Morrissey, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Jason Ringenberg, David Eugene "Sixteen Horsepower" Edwards, and of course Mr Charles Michael Kitteridge Thompson the Fourth
and Lisa Germano (I only own one album she sings on, OP8's "Slush", but... whoa), Grace Slick, Anna Waronker, Beth Gibbons, Tanya Donelly, Suzanne Vega (I'll stand by that opinion), Kimya Dawson (not much of a voice but she really moves me), Helen Merrill, Cristina Branco...
to name but a few.
And I didn't mention all the bands of which I love the vocals without knowing the name of the singer(s).
From a strictly mathematical point of view it seems that I listen to more male vocals than female, but on the other hand, my favourite artist ever, in any genre, is a woman singer (that would be Kristin Hersh).
Franck (that would be a boy's name, then)

i hate female singers as a rule. i've never liked any female fronted bands, apart from the breeders. looking through my cd collection you'd struggle to find any bands fronted by a female apart from the breeders... don't know what it is about them, just can't stand them.

I'm into more male musicians and all-male bands. I'm not sure whether I would say I necessarily like men's voices better, though, so much as that more male musicians have just appealed to me in general. I'm a guy, by the way.

There are way more male vocalists that I like than female, I don't know why. I guess it's the style of music, because I love everything else about females. I really like:
Suzanne Vega - her voice is sooo sexy. Sarah McLaughlin - same as the aforementioned Ms. Vega. The Sneaker Pimps - used to have a sexy-sounding woman by the name of Kelli Dayton as lead vocalist; the band sucks complete arse without her.
I know there are others, I just can't think of them right now..!

I'm male, and I prefer male vocals. Female backed is good too, a la pixies etc. I reckon men can get more energy across, especially through a scream, although that Brody woman, she can sound rather mannish sometimes.
I'd say 90% of music I listen to is man fronted. I like Cat Power, Throwing Muses, Cocteau Twins and all that, but it's mainly male singers in my collection.

There's a female vocalist named Nicolette Larson... she sings on a few Neil Young records, she's got a great voice. I think female vocals with male vocals (like Pixies albums) give dimension and depth to the music and lyrics. What better contrast or dynamics can you have than a male AND female singing together?

I bought their debut album on Camden market for 3 pounds the other week, and it's very good. Are they still going? They should never have gotten rid of her.

The vast majority of female musicians I listen to are ones my girlfriend introduced me to. There was a time when she would generally only listen to male musicians, though.
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

Male vocals for me vast majority of the time - and I'm with Offerw on Mike Patton.

I tend to be a bigger fan of male vocals, the majority of musicians that I listen to are male.
Recent exceptions: I enjoy the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs (Karen O), Alison Krauss sounds lovely on the O' Brother soundtrack, The girls of Broken Social Scene, young lady in Arcade Fire, Loretta Lynn's last album (though my favorite tune on there is where she duets with Jack White), Postal Service.
Those groups either have women providing lead or supporting vocals and I like them all. So I suppose I generally perfer male vocals but I'll certainly give the females a shot....and duets can be really cool. |

I don't think I have a preference - I guess most of my collection is male-fronted, but that's more a reflection of the music scene as a whole. I particularly enjoy the music of Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, who are both extremely gifted songwriters and have beautiful voices. The singer who sings with Damien Rice is also excellent.

Ok, so being on topic: Some months ago I made a love song compilation and I realised that all songs (with two expections) were sung by women, so I guess I like them a lot more.

I forgot to mention Low, as you were talking about harmonies back there... No-one (and I mean no-one) does more beautiful male/female harmonies than Low.
