I was curious as to other bands that you've seen live who've played songs from the Pixies catalogue.
I saw a Canadian band called 60 Watt Vamp, who said if they could be two bands they would be a Pixies covers band also. They played Where is my Mind, Broken Face and Gigantic at the show I saw. They did a really good job.
Any others? |

Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers did a solo show and played "Debaser" on piano.. and demanded the audience to yell out "chien!"

In 2001 the Toadies ended most of their encores with 'Where Is My Mind?' I enjoyed it.

The Ultra Cool Rock Band that Rocks, PaliN always covers the Pixies at every gig. They play: Hey (with a cool jam/solos at the end), Where Is My Mind, Cactus, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Gouge Away, I Bleed, and the guitarist/co-singer does Wave of Mutilation (uk surf) sometimes.

Okay it's me... just another shameless plug. But we do cover the Pixies constantly, every show has a frickin Pixies song. Cause I love them so. I'm the only one that wants to do a Frank Black song, the other two don't like his solo stuff much.

The Fastbacks covered "Allison" when they opened for Pearl Jam in 1994. I was impressed by the choice of cover, but the band itself was not too impressive. |

Hayden the anti-folk hero from Toronto, Canada used to play Gouge Away and even recorded it for the B-side of the Mild&Hazy 7".
You will all hate me for saying this, but his recorded version is ten times better than the pixies. He shouts out this nah nah nah nah part that sends chills down my spine.
I constantly scream for him to play it whenever he comes to Vancouver, but the closest we ever get is Tell Me Why by Neil Young and let's face it - that's not very close at all. |

Number 13 Baby, a Seattle-based band, plays Pixies covers exclusively. They are AWESOME. Complete with girl bass-player, too. |

as stated previously placebo cover where is my mind, but according to a friend, the live dvd they have just released, shamelessly sitting un watched downstairs, has them being joined by frank black, you all knew that though as FB&the catholics supported and I daresay a number of you attended.

i saw a guy named Bobby Bare, Jr opening for the Decemberists last week, and much to my delight he started playing Where Is My Mind, then got destracted and started talking about how so many other songs rip that song off, and started playing a little of Weezer's Say It Aint So, then he left that train of thought and did a slow folky cover of Cum On Feel The Noise by one of those 80s hair bands. it was ok, but i would've liked him to finish the Pixies tune. He also did a kinda cool folky version of the Smiths' What Difference Does It Make.
back to the topic, i also saw the Toadies do WIMM. it was just the 2nd show of the tour. i did an online chat with them that day and they said they might do it at the show but weren't sure. so when they came out for the encore, i shouted "PIXIES! WHERE IS MY MIND!" really loud to encourage them. Todd (singer) was like "wow, you guys are psychic!" and they started playing it. that was cool. and they played it every show after that. i wonder if my enthusiasm helped them decide to make it a staple of the set. :) |

on the make up's 1st album, live at the cold rice, at the beginning of one track, while the guitarist is tuning it totally sounds like a few notes from caribou are being played, i htink caribou, somehting off pilgrim. i'll dig the cd up at home alter and check. but everytime i hear, i kind of wish they would have played. |

Thanks Jamestaylorman
Wave of Mutilation, a Tribute to the Pixies. Playing Pixies songs as close to the Pixies sound, and looking/acting like them on stage (or trying to). It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys I tell you! I'm absolutely stoked to be attending the gig in Victoria this week, but at the same time am just a little sad that we aren't even rehearsing, no shows planned.
Would you listen to the whining!
When we next hit the sage, come say hi JTM

I am working on a new section for Alec Eiffel that tries to compile a list of Pixies covers, officially released or not, from famous or obscure bands.
It should be online soon.
It includes nearly 200 entries!

I saw That Statue Moved play a kickass cover of "Letter to Memphis" in various gigs around the Midwest circa 1993. |

When I saw Radiohead play at Suffolk Downs, Boston, back in August of 2001, Thom played a riff from "U-Mass" and sang "It's educational!"

A NZ band 'the feelers' played where is my mind as their encore the last time i saw them - they're all huge pixies fans, and they blatantly and openingly admit stealing the drum pattern from break my body for one of their songs which i can't remember the name of.
also, their last 2 albums have been produced by Gil Norton.

David Bowie, recording 'Cactus' on the 2002 'Heathen' album, playing it at pretty much every show since then.
And he covered 'Debaser' with Tin Machine.

Check out the Loud Family's cover of "Debaser" - while the band is no more, the song is immortalized on the fabulous live album "From Ritual to Romance." It's such a great cover from such a great band. |
