[ Back in Black ]

When the Pixies disbanded in 1993, fans fried their tears on their flannel shirtsleeves. Now flannel is out and all four original Pixies--Black Francis (a.k.a. Frank Black), Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering--are in for a reunion tour.

Playboy: It has been said that without the Pixies there would have been no Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Do you agree?
Francis: I'm sure they were inspired by us, as I have been inspired by them. But I think they would have done fine without hearing my records.
Playboy: When did you first realize you could sing?
Francis: When I was 13 my neighbor played "Oh! Darling," by Paul McCartney, for me. He was like, "Come on! Sing it like you hate that bitch!" That was my first rock-and-roll singing lesson.
Playboy: Did you really find Kim Deal through a newspaper ad?
Francis: She found us. She was the only one who responded. And Kim knew a drummer, so we killed two birds.
Playboy: You've said, "Since the age of 13 I've known that corporate rock sucks. While the other guys at school were listening to Journey, I was listening elsewhere."
Francis: If you're a music fan, you figure out early on that there are popular bands that the kids are listening to, and then there are all these other records. My focus has always been on the other records.
Playboy: In the Pixies' heyday, were you living large?
Francis: Certainly not. I got invisited to a Grammy party once. It was boring. People assume we were a huge band in the States, but we felt like obscure underdogs even when we were selling out venues. There's so much talk about fame, money and popularity. People assume that musicians are craving to be big and famous, but the people who are focused on being famous are probably not very good. --A.P.

Yeah, I thought, "Uh-oh... Derek strikes again," then I saw it was Jim and figured it was actually an article. Since it's well-known that Jim does on occasion happen to come across a Playboy

Yeah, that was a work of art.

Good job on the article too, Jim.

I'm just glad there is a Frank Black article so I can justify to my wife why I bought it. Literally for the articles.

Now, if he could only do an interview for Leg Show ...mmmmmm ...

I wonder why they decided to use "Francis:" rather than "Black;". If you use Black you're covered for first or his last name.

Regarding the old joke "I read Playboy for the articles," it seems like a *wink wink nudge nudge* joke until you actually subscribe to it, and it becomes a reality. I'm dead serious, Playboy has some excellent articles in it. There have been a number of times where I wanted to show people articles but then remembered "Oh yeah, there's T&A in this magazine." I got the subscription really cheap, the tits are a big plus, but there are some great articles in there...very liberal. I can get much better porn for free online anyway.

just one question... this is this playboy issue? who's on the cover. I would like to read this. I'm not much of a playboy fan so i'll be buying it only for the article. Put It Where It Doesn't Belong is a much better magazine.

Pam Anderson is on the cover. It's the May 2004 issue.

Jim, picked up a Playboy but didn't have FB interview, but you're right about the articles. They're truly great. No wonder this magazine has been around so long.

carl: "That's very generous, and surely not true."

exactly, carl, I've noticed a lot of interviews where FB is very kind and diplomatic when he's talking about other people. Very gentlemanly.
