His new album, Seven Swans, is one of the most poignant works of art I've come across. His songwriting is so emotive, whether or not you approve or disapprove of his subject matter, which is mainly God.

A true musical genius. I really recommend this record.

I can't believe no one has an opinion on Sufjan Stevens. If you haven't heard his stuff, you should make amends and acquire it right now. What are you, a bunch of zombies (meant in a non-offensive way)?

Hey, I heard a lot of positive things about him. What is his music like? Someone compared him to Nick Drake, I think, and I love Nick Drake.

Yes, Sufjan has been compared to Nick Drake. His music is kind of mellow, mostly acoustic, and in that respect he can also be compared to Damien Rice (who also sounds like Drake, of course). His music is absolutely sincere and unpretentious, because how can you give a flying f*** about what other people think about you when you write an album to God?

Sufjan plays just about every instrument you can think of, even some brass. I read somewhere that he learned how to play the oboe when he was young. Very talented.

Anyway, it's melody and emotion. Speedy: Say Yes to Michigan is a very good record, especially the latter half of it. It's not as flawless as Seven Swans though, which is even more low-key I think. His first album, A Sun Came, has some terrific songs on it, and his second one, Enjoy Your Rabbit, is mostly instrumental, a bit avant garde, and I love it.

Seven Swan is great, but I haven't heard his other stuff yet. Would definitely like to, though.

Is that the guy who's friend with the Danielson Famile? Does his music have anything to do with the Famile's?

I just can't get into his latest album. Too much repetition, maybe.

seven swans is my favorite record of the year so far, slightly ahead of the new bad plus and the new john vanderslice. i don't think its repetitious, i think its themed. that might seem like a cop out, but i think its true

If anyone wants to, we can go through the album, song by song. opinions, likes, dislikes. Similar to Pixies: song of the day.

Just have they lyrics, keep in within this thread, and give us a few days to respond to each song.
