excuse my naivety but is the breeders song 'i just wanna get along' so obviously about frank. just always wondered, specially when she sings if youre so special...why arent you dead (little dig there me thinks). anyone know?
and does anyone know if kim ever played much before the pixies. i always thought she didnt have much band experience before. if that so, she sure is a genius. some of her songs are on a par with any of my faves

I think Kelley Deal sings that song. At least she did when I saw them a couple weeks ago.

Want to know what I've always wondered? If the guy from Calistan, from when Frank sings "I saw the old man, he was doing OK" is the same guy from Dig For Fire, who risides on beach in town where he is going to live. But of course, Calistan isn't a town, its the state of California from when the Arabs take over. Still, I like to pretend they're one and the same.
I think its the same deal for both songs. Your kimi deal meaning and my fb are just what we read into it. Still, its fun to creat a back story for things.

In my imagination, they were roomates in college. Things were good to begin with, but then they started agruing about who's turn it was to wash the dishes and stuff like that. Eventually, things got so made that they painted a line down the center of the apartment, and each had to stick to their own side. sailin' and shorin' guy joined the merchant marines but jumped ship when he met a little lady named subbacultcha. Then he started drug running on a boat out of panama.

I think she and her sister had played in truckstops and such places in her native Ohio under the name Breeders. I'm pretty sure that the pixies were her first real band.

Story tells,Kim played with Kelley as a duo in truck stops in Ohio, once they opened for Stephenwolf(did I pronounced that right?),yeah the "Born To Be Wild" ones. There is a version of "I Just Wanna Get Along" with Kim singing,I'd suggest you listen to "Cannonball" the acoustic version to get an idea of what they sounded in the early days also their cover of "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You",in one of the Breeders singles probably was one of the songs they performed in the early truck stop days!!! Just like When Sebadoh recorded "The Freed Pig"Lou Barlow's song for J Mascis,Kim most probably covered it for Frank(Frank was not acting like a gentleman in those days and she probably hadn't forgotten the time he kicked a guitar towards her on stage when she was late for a gig, which he admitted) and ironically she got J Mascis to produce it as well as the other songs on the Vinyl only release of the Breeders Head To Toe 7" and 10" records. |

i seem to recall Kelly deal introducing "I Just Want To Get Along" as being about the Van Nuys Police Department.. but some people INSIST it's about Frank. i don't really know..
i've always the "old man" in Calistan is Frank's dad. since he was a bar owner and all. but then i remember reading somewhere that it was about some archeologist.. and the different verses are the different layers he's digging up ; the whole "used to be.." series etc..

Have you guys checked out the Breeder's first album... "Pod." It is my favorite Breeder's album..... I love all the songs but the remake of the Beatles' "Happiness is a Warm Gun." rocks! |

I was fortunate enough to get a free promo copy of it when it came out, with press photos and PR info. Very good album. At the time it reminded me of the first Gang of Four LP (but not quite that good). I like the sparseness of it. I still reckon it's my favorite Breeders album, though I only have the first two. |

Yeah The Breeders came first, then the Pixies :D
But the Breeders were basically doing covers of Hank Williams' songs, Kim sang and played guitar, while Kelley sang.
And I think the Breeders RULE!! :)

yeah Kurt also said it was the BEST album of 1990. No wonder why he asked the Breeders to open up for them. :)
You know what is cool/funny? I read an article in which Nirvana was playing, and Kim wanted to stage dive, I think it was dave or Krist that said that Kim wanted to do that, and when she did, they said "That was Kim's first time to stage dive" haha. That is SO cool!

I think somewhere on the net is an audio interview with Kim talking about the meaning of "I Just Wanna Get Along". She said that Kelley sings it. Kim also said that it was funny for her to sing it because she really DIDN'T wanna get along with anybody! It's kind of an oxymoron type thing.

Wow you guys have so much knowledge...you know so much...do you know if there is any pre-pixies breeders stuff? The first album i have is pod.
I shared this with a rock music critic who was a mentor to me...every week i would give him a new one...he was CRAZY about POD but most of the other alubums i would exchange with him he wasn't that happy with. It's just a damn good album.
That is the coolest story about Kim's Stage dive! I wish i could have seen it! Stage dives are fun..I haven't done a stage dive but had people boost me up and pass me around. Man I miss those days...I bet i would be sore for days if i did that now. |

So Kim and Kelley were the Breeders before Pixies (new to me), but Kelley isn't on Pod and the Safari EP, is she? Why wasn't part of the Breeders when they first started recording? |

Daisy Girl, Being in Mpls, I thought you might like to know that Kim's stage dive you guys are talking about was at the Nirvana/Breeders/Shonen Knife show at Roy Wilkins (St. Paul) back in Dec. 1993. Shonen Knife loves "chocobars" and it was Hanukkah so I thought it would be funny to throw some chocolate gelt coins at them. I guess they don't have gelt in Japan cause they didn't respond. But later I threw some up to Kim at the end of the Breeders set and she wished us all a Happy Hanukkah. I was really into all 3 groups at the time and I still poop in my pants just thinking about how lucky I was to be there. I haven't lost my bowels at a concert since then, but I bet I will at the Fine Line tomorrow night. If you smell something funky it's probably me. |

Kelley did play on the Safari E.P.(www.noaloha.com/breeders) but not on POD because she had a regular job at the time. And for before POD material check the POD Demos, there's some good stuff in there! |

that is so cool...not about the poop but the show! to make you feel better i think there's going to be alot of fans loosing control of their bodily functions...that's cool because if i am lucky enough to get tickets to the second show, i will get to sort of relive it. the concert part...not the poop hopefully. |

If Kim says "I Just Wanna Get A Bong" isn't about the end of the Pixies then I guess I believe her, but she had to know that people would come up with that interpretation.
Reading it as a message to Frank, one line I like is "And then your head exploded/Imagine doing just what the Big Bang did". The way she sings it is funny. It's as if she's saying "Look, UFO Boy, here's the problem in terms you'll understand. You know all about the The Big Bang, right? Well that's what your ego turned into. Think about that while your reading this month's Omni." |

I got into the Breeders before I did the Pixies. And I still listen to/love them as much as I always did. I'm trying to get this girl I know to do Cannonball and No Aloha in my band. But she's nervous. damn.

Although Kelley sings 'IJWGA', it was Kim that wrote it, but she decided not to put in on the pod album. And when Kelley joined the band, she heard the demo of it and thought it was cool. So she decided to do the vocals for it. and for anyone who cares... Kim was a little pissed with Kelley soon after releasing the album because Kelley's boyfriend had been living with them in kim's house for too long. So in an interview with Kim about the song she said, "Yeah she sings the song but Kelley doesn't wanna get along, I think that's apparent!" - she sounds so cute when she's angry |

The Subbacultcha woman is Nadine, I think. They both have pale skin and black clothes. The chick in "Is She Weird?" is probably the same person.
