Well, since the beginning, this has been a perfectly prepared event.
First, let the rumours do their job : Frank makes a joke, then says it's not true, then says it is true...people start talking about that reunion all the time.
Than Coachella and all that other stuff. No use of mass media, no press bombing, just an elegant leak of information. The Pixies are a classy band, with a classy manager.
Each gig sold out in a day. They don't announce all the shows at the same time, so you hurry up to buy your ticket. They open up for the Chili Peppers, for the kids who only know "where is my mind".
They sell live records just after the show. No record company, no 4AD.
Frank makes an honest statement in GQ : "we're doing it for the money". Hey, who could complain? They didn't get what they deserved 10 years earlier, so they're coming for it now.
They're doing it at a perfect moment : rock revival and the Pixies quoted by every respectable musician as their major influence.
Minimum media exposure for a maximum return on investment. The know-how of the greatest indie band in the world.

I do not think the management have been very smart on the choice of venues for the reunion in the UK.
They could clearly have sold 10 times the number tickets that they did in London. The Red Hot Chilie Peppers sold 170,000 tickets in 5 hours for their shows in Hyde Park. The White Stripes sold out 28,000 tickets at Alexander Palace in hours. To date only the 18000 tickets for the four Brixton shows have been sold in the whole of the UK for the non festival events.
Hopefully they will do a proper big venue tour in the Autumn to properly exploit their current pulling power.

Yeah, I'd like to see them playing more in the U.K. From what I can tell, their fan base is somewhat rabid over there. But I have a video of them playing at Brixton in 91 and they're mighty fine in it. It seems like a nice sized venue, from what I could tell. And I'd rather see them playing several times at a smaller venue than once at a huge venue where it's not as intimate. But maybe I'm totally off base and don't know what's going on over there. We're all assuming over here in the states (or at least hoping) that a full U.S. tour will go off without a hitch. That'd make things a bit nicer. But overall, I must applaud Adnan. There are a lot of threads complaining about how they should have done this or they should have done that, and so-and-so was quoted as saying something-or-other and that pissed someone off. I'm very pleased to see somebody complimenting the band for doing what they've done. Bravo. Or let me try my hand at some french.... Tu est.... um.... er.... Bravo! Nevermind. My French sucks. Je suis malade? That means I'm either sick or stupid, right?

Yeah, Brixton is a fantastic venue if you get a ticket. Luckily I managed to get tickets, but a lot of people were disapointed. The point I am making is not that people are disapointed but that the band are not getting the correct size audience. They should have done something like Radiohead did last year where they did a couple of shows in a medium sized venue and then several big shows at the larger sized venues. |

I agree. Radiohead is on to something there. Personally, I would much rather see a band as amazing as the Pixies playing a week at a medium sized venue because it compliments the music so much more than a large venue. That is, however, neither economical or time efficient (unless they did three shows a day ). I just like to see venues do the music justice so everybody can enjoy it more. Idealistic? Yes. Realistic? No.

I agree with Adnan.
As for not playing more UK dates, there is still time for more to be announced.
And everyone has some opportunity to see them 'cos they are playing two festivals that have not sold out yet. I know it's not the same, but it's still the Pixies.

I must say that small, intimate venues rule, and giant concerts suck! It's just a bit sad when you know that dedicated fans have tried their hardest to score tickets and come up empty-handed. Hopefully, it will all work out so that everyone gets to see the band, but I'll guarantee that the folks who get to see the Brixton shows are in for more of a treat than those who attend the big festivals. |

Well it depends what you call giant, I went to the Radiohead Earls Court gig last November and the White Stripes gig at Alexander Palace in January and they were both spot on.
The White Stripes gig in particular I don't think could have been better. The sound was really good and how just 2 people made so much sound to completely overwhelm a 14,000 crowd I do not understand. I went with my thirteen year old son and somehow with the crowd milling about we ended up three rows from the front directly in front of Jack White for the start of their set. He was literally a mere ten feet from us. Admitedly the crush at the front was so great that I had to bail out after an hour and go for a beer because I was so hot. but even from the back of the hall where the bar was the sound was brilliant.
So I am all for them doing indoor shows in the 15,000 to 20,000 range. I think they should do as many as they can sell tickets for. |
