Well things were further discussed and hashed out in subsequent posts, klikger. I think I came off sounding kinda arrogant and other people made very valid points. However, now that I've seen both the Pixies and Frank Black & the Catholics, I can safely say that for ME, the two are completely different beasts. I'd love to see a lot more of both of them.

Well, SXL, I suggest you go buy all the Frank Black & the Catholics albums you can find. Listen to them over and over again. I've found that to be the best way to explore this new world of music.

Hi everyone,
I have been hanging out in the Pixies forums for too long and would like to add a litte perspective from a Pixies fan point of view. And wanted to shed a little light regarding Prozacrat's thoughts.
First off Frank is a musical god and the best lyricist I know.
The reason why I never was able to be a hard core FB/Catholics fan was because I secretly blamed him for breaking up my favorite band.
I had followed the Pixies since Dolittle and when I had heard the Pixies had broken up. To use an analogy my teenage brain felt as though I had experienced an unexpected break up with a boy/girlfriend. Basically I wanted to block out any bad memories and had since focused on early Pixies albums. My friends at the time had similar expereinces. I was stunned and hurt. I reacted to this worse than when Kurt Cobain killed himself. I can only imagine this feeling was when Beatles fans heard their favorite band broke up
I bought Frank Black's first solo CD and liked it...but it was just too difficult to keep following him because it reminded me of the Pixies, if that makes any sense. Frank Black is one of the most extranary musicians of our time. I am just happy that the Pixies reunion has healed my wounds and I am now ready to explore what I imagine is the best stuff of his career.
I will be comming here for advise!
Thanks for listening and I hope this helps create more understanding among the old school Pixies/FB Fans. I can't imagine what music would be with out Frank. Also thanks to you who have all started this great forum where we can share our passion of all incarnations of Frank's musical genius.

I'm not exactly sure if that shed any more light on my thoughts or not, but thanks! It's definately an admirable point of view. However, unlike you, after I found out about the break up (I didn't even hear about them until after they broke up) I started lapping up all of his solo work I could. It's like anything he's ever had his hands on is a delicious treat for my ears, regardless of its particular incarnation. Pixies, Catholics, whatever. Just GIVE IT TO ME!!! Does that make sense? And what's more than that, just look at this next year. This last week has given us a handful of live Pixies albums, and this next week will give us another handful. There's a DVD coming out next Tuesday of Pixies stuff. He's releasing a double disc this summer of Pixies remakes with Two Pale Boys (and I like this very much) not to mention who knows what else will be on there (demos, yes, but I don't know what else) and he wants to release two b-sides albums of Catholics material, some of which I've never heard, but to hear all of them compiled like this will be delicious. He just recorded an album in Nashville with a current count of 19 songs I believe. There's potential for a new Pixies album sometime which would rock hardcore, but I won't officially add it to my list. Damn. I feel like a kid in a candy store. (And yes, of course I'd love to hear a new Catholics album or two soon as well. )

Wow, Daisy. I almost envy you; getting to listen to that many great records for the first time... They are all brilliant in their own way. There are some great days ahead! |

You may have to space them out, just for your sanity's sake. I ditto speedy m's comment there. For you, Everything Is New. And I know Frank wants to keep putting out records for a long time to come, but you should make the most of this as you can. I'm a huge Shakespeare nut, but I refuse to read all his plays, since I know he won't be putting out any new ones any time soon. I've just gotta save some for the future so there's something completely new I can look forward to. People could find plenty of ways to complain about me comparing Frank to Shakespeare, but I make the comparison very loosely. Any suggestions on how Daisy Girl should listen to FB&TC? My gut instinct would be to say in chronilogical order, all right away. But there could be a better order. And spaced out over the proper period of time could maximize your FB&TC pleasure. Thoughts?

Thanks speedym and prozacrat...
the good news is i do have frank black ... his first solo release.. like i need to say that here . It is strange, I liked it at the time but now I even appriciate it even more now. Guess it is more proof to your points that his work was ahead of its time and now I've caught up. Thanks for your advise! |

I dunno... I got into the Pixies (I was born a few years to late to really be aware first time round) by buying all five lps and a bootleg of the b-sides (a bit of a leap of faith admittedly as I think I'd probably only heard Debaser on MTV by that point) and listening to the lot collectively over a few weeks.
Did do FB&Cs chronologically, but that was the only logical way without time travel...
I'm not sure of being selective in any way of the order you listen to stuff is sensible, otherwise you end up perhaps not liking turns the music takes over time, if you just listen in one go I think that it all endures much longer.

Completely off-topic but:
I always debate whether your name is prozacrat (as in someone whose business is prose, like a bureaucrat/democrat except cool) or prozac rat as in, well, a chronically depressed rat.
I like the prose peddling prozacrat myself.
This moment of inanity brought to you by hunger and fatigue: unleash the awesome power of nature with these all-natural mental poisons.

Once you have 1,000 posts on an internet board, "too cool" probably doesn't describe you.

In my head I like to pretend that the Cult of Joey is cooler. But when it comes to the Pixies I like to think that it's all equally cool.
