Anyone else, besides me, while in the record section of a store find themselves checking out the Pixies section? Before the reunion there was always 1 or 2 Pixies cd's at Best Buy. Since the official announcement there is ZERO.

One of two things is the reason:
1. Both Pixies cd's were finally sold and the record department decided they didn't need to restock them any more.
or
2. They restock their Pixies cd's with 2 copies but they are sold the same day, but it takes weeks to reorder 2 more cd's to restock the shelf.

With any reunion there is a surge in Record sales.

WAKE UP BEST BUY!

come to think of it Sam (to pricey) Goody didn't have any either.

The Best Buy I work at hasn't had any Pixies CDs for months. I check quite often too. As well as no Pixies, I haven't seen any Frank Black CDs for a month or so. The Best Buy music section is hit or miss. That's a polite way of saying it's crappy most of the time.

I still need to buy Come on Pilgrim so that's why I wish they'd get in some Pixies CDs

I haven't checked the music section in a while, but they like, NEVER had Frank Black, ever...only when the new album would come out they'd have a few copies.

Best Buy is where I bought MOST of my Pixies and a few of my Frank Black's. I used to work in the media dept. when I was at Best Buy, so I always had first dibs on the good music. Funny thing, the one album we had a lot of was Trompe le Monde, and the only album we ever got any more copies of was Surfer Rosa. They only usually had one copy at any given time. At that Best Buy I bought Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, The complete B-sides, Trompe le Monde, Death To..., The Pixies (Purple Tape) and by FB&TC's, Black Letter Days, Devil's Workshop, and Show Me Your Tears. I also bought the Breeder's Title TK there. I had to go to FYE to buy Doolittle and Bossanova, and Borders to buy At the B.B.C. and FB&TC's Dog in the Sand (I was surprised to find that one! I was casually browsing through the "B" section, probably for Bowie, and out popped Frank and co.! Needless to say, I dropped whatever else I had, and got that.). The rest I got off ebay. It depends on what area of the country you're in too. Demand varies by population and age group. Especially where I live - Northeast PA. (land of top 40 classic rock).

rockmusic84, where are you at in northeast PA, wait your in Dickson Cuty. I am in the Scranton and the only store you should be shopping for your Pixies and Frank fix is Gallery of Sound. I was slumming the local "record" stores the other night and Best Buy (the one you probably work in) had squat (only good for movies) but GOS had all the Pixies and most of the current FB and the C releases. YOu shouldn't even go to FYE. He's right, radio up here f'n sucks. I have even spoken with local DJs at top 40 stations and they actually listen to: for example, Radiohead, the Pixies, They Might Be Giants, etc but there is a system to what they play and they have to play it. She told me that even during an all reguest hour I would be damn lucky to hear that if I called in.

not having the greatest working knowledge of how it all works in the US, is it not possible, if you're looking for an album, to just place a customer order for it, and have them order it in for you?

I agree though, that's a bit weird they don't have them in stock - it sounds like they sold out of Warners stock, and haven't re-stocked with 4AD stock via ADA....

Wasn't looking to buy since I have them all. I just like to put them in a more viewer friendly location for new listeners.

That is probably the answer. Any idea of how to get this fixed?

How many people on this forum have actually worked or work for Best Buy? I'm starting to think it's more than a coincidence (where's that suspicious smilie....?).

We have crappy 'best buy's here, but they're, what you call them, seven eleven's? Newsagents here. I don't know.

I worked for Best Buy. Like 7 years ago, as a college freshman. Music dept.

From what I remember, Best Buy doesn't do customer orders for music (tho' most of the other chains do). They're not really focused on music. They just have the CDs in there to get more people in the store who might also happen to be in the market for a washing machine or a computer.

The buyers for the music department are not on staff at each store. The buyers are in the corporate office. The music stocked and what gets ordered are probably "decided" by a computer program.

I haven't been in a Best Buy in awhile (I see Pixies CDs in the other stores I go to all the time, though -- I bought the current 4AD issue of Doolittle at Circuit City for my kid sister last Fall), but it's likely that a lot of Best Buys will stock the forthcoming 'Best of' album. Just because it's a new release. And if that sells decently, some of the back catalog may trickle in again.

Well, to go with what Jo said, the last time I was out all the good local stores had all the Pixies re-issues from 4AD/Beggars Group. They all have slightly metallic covers and a few minor packaging differences (that's one quick way to tell looking at covers) and the last time I saw any Pixies in major chains they still hdd the old Elektra copies. And from personal experience, Best Buy will not order customers anything from the store, even if it's available online.

Last year WEA's liscense to issue the Pixies catalogue expired, and now 4AD issues them. Funny enough, WEA manufactures and distributes 4AD here in the states (Universal (Polygram) issues them in Canada, I believe). I own all the Elektra originals. The newer 4AD issues are nothing to fawn over. No bonus tracks, no different artwork, mixes, or remastering, from what I have heard. Just fancy clear tray C.D. cases, slight metallic tinting on the covers of Doolittle and Bossanova, and Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa have different text fonts (I guess they're trying to make them LOOK new, or something).
Gallery of Sound IS awesome, King Philbert. I shop there a lot. Last summer, when I was first getting into the Pixies, they had nothing there. Now, stores are beginning to catch on. Maybe because of the reunion, maybe because of renewed interest, who knows? And as I said, I used to work at best buy, in the media dept. (music, movies, games, etc...). And yes, I tried to give people advice, down at that record shop...but most of them just wanted the Justin Timberlake or Christina Aguilera albums. :( I did have one success story though. I turned this guy on to Lou Reed's. "The Blue Mask", and he became a repeat customer. :)

UK music store, HMV is currently having a "Clearout Sale" and I was surprised to find all almost every Pixies CD available for £4.99 or £5.99 . You'd expect them to keep them at full price (£11.99) at a time like this. Still - it's a great time to be a Pixies newbie though, I guess.

A lot of the Pixies CDs you would find in the states, not matter what store, they have a "classic' or "super saver" sticker of sorts on them and sell for about $9.99 - $12.99. I am sure FYE still wants $18.99 though.

Rockmusic84, I commend you on what you tried to do while at Best Buy in this craptastic area we live in. If you need anyhting FB or Pixies related let me know. I have some good bootlegs and all.

you should never find a Pixies CD at full price nowadays - they're all on the GAD prefix (mid price) now, except the new Best Of...

So I was in a Best Buy in Maryland yesterday and they had two copies of Doolittle. I'm thinking the bigger the Best Buy, the bigger the music department will be. This one was alot bigger than the Best Buy I worked at and the media section was much better (more selection). Still no Frank Black though.

The local Best Buy in Northeast Pa is consider like a level 5 store or something. The smallest they come for areas they aren't sure a Best Buy would do good in. I have been to ones in larger areas that stay open until midnight and have ridiculously huge music depts though.

I wonder if there is a corelation between the size of the Best Buy and the amount of Pixies CDs available.

level 5 can sell Doolittle
Level 4 can sell Doolittle and Surfer Rosa
Level 3 can sell Doolittle, SR, and Trompe Le Monde
Level 2 can sell Doolittle, SR, TLM, and Come on Pilgrim
Only level 1 can sell everything, including Bossanova

And this lame theory does not guarantee availability of what the store will have.

I had purchased my Death to... at a Best Buy. One of the larger ones, and years ago. I am sure the level of store depends on how much they get, maybe not what they get. I think it just depends. I still go with what Jo said. Selling out their backlog of Warner discs and not restocking with 4AD discs. Maybe in the summer once the Reunion has actually started. There are almost always better places to buy your CDs though.

The Best Buy over here always has a decent selection of Pixies CDs. They used to have a lot of Frank Black CDs (DITS, TOTY, BLD, DW, SMYT) but now, all of the sudden, they've stopped selling them; there's no longer a section for him or anything.

You know, buying off bestbuy.com isn't too bad. It's free shipping and the CD will usually arrive within 2-4 days. They have way more selection than if you went in to an actual best buy store.

There was a time that the BestBuy in Bay Shore, Long Island, had every single pixies cd. Many copy of them, infact. Once, Suferrosa was even the BestBuy best-buy of the week, and was on sale for only $5.99. But that was before the dark times...before the empire. Now no pixies remain, and only a sigle FB. I can't even find the name card for the Breeders now. Alas.

They had Pixies at the BBC when I went there today, and I live in South Dakota. I tried to get the new They Might Be Giants single there, but they didn't have it. Had to go elsewhere. Buggers.

Ducked into a Best Buy today while waiting out a traffic jam.

Two Doolittles, two Surfer Rosas (all of them new 4AD copies with the "Beggar's Group" sticker on the shrinkwrap). That's it.

No Frank Black. Not even a card for him.

'nother Best Buy observation (cuz I went back there today).

The music department at this store was scaled down from what it used to be. In my high school days I went to this Best Buy a lot and back then the music selection was enormous. Jazz took up a whole aisle, the country music selection was big and diverse, there was a folk section, classical music had its own room, and the rock section was loaded with indie releases and imports.

Today, the jazz section has been knocked down to only two of those metal shelving units (as is classical), the country section has ONLY the most mainstream stuff, folk is gone, and the majority of the rock section seemed to be new releases/recent reissues, fewer indies, and lots of 'Greatest Hits' compilations. There was very little there older than about three years (not including older material recently reissued, like all of those Bob Dylan remasters).

So if you can't find the Pixies albums at yer local Best Buy, there's probably lots of "back catalog" stuff of similar popular standing that you can't find there either.

When I was into buying my CDs at Best Buy (early to mid-90s) CDs were still kinda new as the dominant format. Lots of people were still upgrading their old collections and we were in the first wave of "remastered" CDs with bonus tracks to replace the crappy 80s CDs. And Best Buy seemed to stock a little of almost everything. Now, maybe because of the music industry sales slump, they seem to streamlining the whole thing and it's not really like that anymore.

The Best Buy where I live is all out of Frank Black and Pixies CD's too. You'd think they'd learn. On the other hand, my local independent music store has lots of Frank CD's including the 3 I don't own yet. And Pixies too.

Update at the Levittown Best Buy.

Today I went to pick up the new Modest Mouse and sure enough they finaly got new copies of Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, 2 copies each. They must have come in on Tuesday. They were the Beggers Groups version.

There was also 4 copies of SMYT in the FB section and nothing else.

Amazon UK have the standard Pixies albums for £4.97 which is pretty cheap.

The Breeders albums are that price too.

The Best Buy over here used to have a crapload of Pixies albums, but a few months ago stopped carrying them. I was a bit pissed off to see zero Pixies albums and three shelves full of the same "Pink" album.
