...sucks a lot? Like, more than even Floyd should suck? I mean, there's the two bookend songs, Pigs On The Wing, that aren't so bad, but combined they're less than 3 minutes long, I believe. And there's some good Gilmour leads, but overall, the basic parts of the songs aren't strong to begin with, and the band feels the need to drag them out for really extended amounts of time. Seems really self-indulgent. I dunno, just some thoughts on Floyd. Even though I don't dig Floyd much at all anymore, this album in particular seems really lacking.

I actually really like that album. It's not an overall favorite, but there's some good stuff on there.

I think it's a fantastic album. One of their best. Not surprisingly it has a very 70's feel, as does Jethro Tull's 'Thick as a brick' or 'Hemispheres' by Rush. No harm in that. There is a oodles more highly crafted song writing in these 3 albums than a lot of the over rated tosh that is being churned out these days.

I therefore disagree with you TarTar!

I think it came out in 1977, so it was right in time for punk! I'm sure, like a lot of 60's/70's progrockers, they had to batten down the hatches during this period of striped down chords and mohawks.

Yeah, it's about as far away from shambolic three-chord 2 minute screaming as can be. Maybe they made a concious effort to be epic, but man, they were lacking in the inspiration department. I mean, the Wish You Were Here album has some lengthy numbers, but they manage to stay fresh and go places. I feel like Animals just drags, meanders, sags, and ultimately, dies a slow, painful proggy death.

My dad bought 'Animals' when it came out and played it all the time. I never minded it. 'Meddle' the Floyd's best, IMO.

I like Animals OK. And yes, Meddle is their best, without Syd Barrett that is.

Meddle is a great album. I have Darkside, the Wall, and Wish you Were Here.I've heard them so much I just don't listen to them that much. I have Animals but I don't listen to it hardly at all, for some reason I don't care for it that much. I also enjoy Atom Heart Mother.

'Dogs' would be my fav on that disc...After this record Floyd pretty much fell apart. And when The Wall came out, I thought it totally blew. I was too punked out by then.

My roommate only owns Piper At the Gates of Dawn. He thinks it all went downhill from there.

"Animals" is one of Floyd's best!! The whole socio-political theme was perfect for the time. Although Waters & co. claim that their most focused album was "Dark Side...", I think this one is just as good. Waters lyrics are amazing, and witty ("Bus stop, rat bag, Ha Ha, charade You are! You Fucked up, old hag, Ha Ha, charade You are!......You're hot stuff with a hat pin, and good fun with a hand gun..."), and Gilmour's guitar playing is among some of his finest. Richard Wright's keyboards are really cool too (check out the intro to "Pigs (Three Different Ones)").
I remember one time my local classic rock radio station played the entire first side of "Animals". I was hoping they'd play side 2, but they didn't. I loved it! In fact, I'd rather hear "Animals" ANYDAY than hearing other Floyd stuff they play over and over again. Even if they'd play some Gilmour or Waters solo stuff, that'd be good. But that's why corporate radio sucks...
And another thing...if we didn't have "Animals", we wouldn't have the classic Flying Pig...how would we ever get by without the Flying Pig!!? :)

"And any fool knows, a dog needs a home,
A shelter from Pigs on the Wing."

Wow, I'm shocked at how many people like Animals. Could it be that it's the least popular album from Dark Side through The Wall that makes it become a favorite, since it's underrated? Or at least, fans of it think it's underrated.
