I only got into this band last year when their newest album "happy songs for happy people" came out but got their other stuff since and think they are brilliant! Anyone else want to agree? By the way anyone seen them live? - how are they? |

I keep meaning to listen to some of their stuff but I don't know anyone who owns any of their albums.
I'm scared to go on Kazaa now.

well i shall begin my lecture because Mogwai are my favouritist band ever!
i just don't know where to begin.
i think 'happy songs for happy people' is their most consistent record, with every song being a winner, with a couple of absolute gems (i know you are but what am i?, ratts of the capital and hunted by a freak).
however, their best songs are on their earlier records - most notably on Mogwai Young Team, which includes the killer 11-minuter like herod, which should be used to scare naughty children and the 16-minute closer mogwai fear satan.
Come On Die Young is a bizarre record, where i think they weren't quite sure which was to go, but the closing 3 tracks spread over 30 minutes of ex-cowboy, may nothing but happiness come through your door and finally, christmas steps is one of the most powerful sequences ever heard.
and ya can't forget new paths to helicon part 1, off Ten Rapid, which is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
and then there was the My Father My King ep...20 minutes of mindblowing power. even though steve albini did a crap job recording it, the song is phenomenal.
Rock Action was a let down for me - a couple of good songs (you don't know jesus, 2 rights make 1 wrong) with alot of filler.
But i find myself listeneing to live recordings alot more than their albums...there are some very very good live sets out there, and i have a fair few.....
Mr Cheese - definitely check them out when they play in London next - you will NOT regret it....summer time i hear. and get your hands on some of their other records for gods sake. and if our new flatmate's computer has a burner, i'll burn ya a couple of live sets so you can get REALLY excited.
I actually saw them live last Friday night at All Tommorrow's Parties, and they were fucking mindblowing - again. and they played Summer too Jim, which they haven't played for probly 5 years...and fuck me it was loud. here's the setlist, which is fucking AMAZING. superheroes of bmx hunted by a freak you don't know jesus cody xmas steps killing all the flies summer i know you are but what am i? helicon 1 2 rights make 1 wrong
encore: sinewave mogwai fear satan ratts of the capital
and finally, check out their webiste mogwai.co.uk if only for the Q&A pages - non-stop hilarity with the band just taking the mickey out of everything and everyone.

yeah i heard they hate radiohead or something - or take the piss out of them at their gigs...maybe i was misinformed.
i bought 'happy songs for happy people' in france last yr, i thought it was radiohead - in my best french i was asking the guy who was that on the cd player and he produced the album and i bought it on the spot. i think i have ever bought an album as spontaniously as that and i was a happy customer..
how famous are they by the way? it was hell trying to find their albums over here in ireland (had to buy mogwai young team on net)..and its really only a kick on the arse away from scotland.

They're pretty big here... The UK's Number One Post Rock Noise Terrorists probably. The gigs are pretty quick to sell which is a good sign. I love Ratts Of The Capital, thats probably my favourite Mogwai song, and as a closer I reckon it would just be stunning.

i don't think they have a special hatred for radiohead - definitey Blur though.... i think they first became famous for their Blur: are shite t-shirts back in 1998 or whenever.
ratts was a good closer, with barry coming in with a second bass guitar, but i still think their best closers are either mogwai fear satan from '99 and my father my king from '02-'03

I love Young Team and CODY and HSFHP but have been so impressed with both Mr Beast and Hawk is Howling that Mogwai is now a super group in my books. I've seen them twice; and been cancelled on once (some border crossing bs). The latest aint their best but still has some interesting songs.
I fucking love The Sun Smells Too Loud:
