These guys are about to become my new favorite band. Anyone heard of them? Their music is as subtle and fresh as me!

I thought about buying the album last week in Tower Records in London but bought The Purple Tapes instead. My mate has since bought it and he likes it. He is gonna lend it me next week so I will let you know what I think. NME gave the album 8 out of 10.

Is it me or are band names getting a little dull? They just seem to be random words. Not even good random words. the Stills, the Stands, the Strokes, the Shins, etc etc. Not that I'm complaining, merely an observation.
Mike, since when have you nearly got a thousand of posts?! I'm sure you were on 300 odd last week.

Since my life left me!!!
I agree with the band names thing. I have been saying this for a while. I don't like bands just calling themselves 'The' something. It shows a real lack of imagination.
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead is my favourite band name ever.

I agree back at you, 'bout the imagination thing. Although I'm not too keen on the Trail of the Dead name, too long for my short tastes. It is better than most though. 'Pixies', I wish I'd thought of it. The best I can keep coming up with is 'the Socks'. Gah, lack of imagination indeed!
The Shins look like a weird band. It makes me wonder how they all met....

I own both Chutes Too Narrow and Oh, Inverted World. Both are excellent albums, although I tend to listen to Chutes more than Inverted World. I wouldn't go as far as to say they are my favorite current band, but they can be pretty entertaining at times.

It seems to me that it's important that a band name comes across as unique and easily recognizable, which none of those do. I have a hard time differentiating between bands like the Strokes, the Shins, the Hives, the Vines, the Thorns, etc. (And no, I don't capitalize the "the"s; that makes the names look even sillier.) That doesn't mean a band name has to be really long or far-out, just different enough from the names of other bands.

Recently, I liked Franz Ferdinand. I agree, the Shins is a stupid name, but a wonderful band.

Well I saw them last night and they were very good. Boy do they have some good tunes.
I bought their first album, 'Oh, Inverted World' after the show and I will buy the second very soon.
The Stills were also good, and I intend to buy their album too.
Surprise of the night however, was the first band on. They were called Dios and the songs I heard were very good. Kind of The Shins meets Weezer. Must find out what they were called.

I love Chutes Too Narrow. I'd put it up there with Franz Ferdinand and Jim Guthrie for best record of 2004. If it came out in 2004. I'm not sure. Either way, it's great. |

Late 60s pop, I would say. They are one of my favorite bands, currently.

Yeah, they're really good. I don't know which CD I like better. I think Chutes Too Narrow just because everything is so catchy. Then again, I love Oh, Inverted World too. I hope to catch them in Chicago this summer. |

Ah, yes, I just discovered this band and searched to see if they'd been brought up ever. Alas! And what an old topic.
I bought "Oh, Inverted World" yesterday and can't stop listening to it. I actually bought the album because of the movie "Garden State." If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. Great movie too.
I needed some new music in my collection and this is what I needed. Their music makes me happy.

The Shins - bad name, good music. Both albums are good, though I think Chutes the better one.

I never really thought much of the name. I think it's fine. Yeah I guess it's not the best name, but at least the music makes up for it... unlike the Strokes or the Vines.

Come to think of it, the Shins shouldn't be categorized with those 2 groups just because their name is simple. Seems like people may get the wrong impression of their music if they are lumped with the "the [plural noun]" retro bands.
But I guess that's the point. They need a more unique name because their music is just that.

The Shins always put a smile on my face. If you love them, I encourage you to pick up the EPs they've put out in support of the two albums. Good stuff, and if you get them all you now have three different, and separately wonderful, performances of New Slang. |

People's slagging of The Strokes on here always makes me laugh. Is the fact that they look a lot cooler/better looking than us?

Other than not liking their music and their whole image, I have nothing against the Strokes.
