Does anybody here know if the 5th series of the Sopranos, currently showing in the US, is actually the last one ever?
Thanks

no - they announced for certain they are making a shorter, 10 episode 6th season that WILL end the series. that begins shooting in early 2005, to air in early 2006.

Oh thanks a lot for this- what a relief.
So how's the 5th series going? I've read Steve Buscemi is in it: any good?

I had no idea it worked like that there: so what do you need to do to have HBO?
Is it like a TV channel that shows only the Sopranos, Six Feet Hunder and (in the past) Sex and the City?
Excuse my ignorance; it is just that in the UK (I think) there is nothing like that...
So Buscemi's good, ah? I'm not surprised, he's a great actor...

HBO is a "premium" channel - you have to subscribe especially to it, and for a po' college student, its more than i can afford. it not only has original series like the aformentioned sopranos, sex and the city and six feet under (plus the HILLARIOUS curb your enthusiasm), but it also shows a lot of movies (usually about 2-3 months after they come out on video), a lot of older films too, boxing, concerts, some talk type show (Dennis Miller, etc), documentaries, etc. Its a really great channel.

I see...
Well cheers for this; I didn't know you needed to have a special channel to watch the Sopranos and other good stuff. Still, I bet in spite of the fact you gotta pay to see it it's quite popular in the US, right?

HBO is a premium movie cable channel in the United States. There's actually like six of them in all: HBO2, HBO family, etc. You have to call up your cable provider and subscribe to it for a fee here in the US. Like Showtime, Cinemax, Flix, Sundance, and the other movie stations, they show mostly (90%) movies, the majority of which suck, and occasionally air special sporting events, such as boxing.

About ten percent of their programing is origional programing. These are your Sopranos, Sex in the City, Six Free Under, Curb Yur Enthusiasm, Carnivale, as well as Real Sex. They actually have a new show, a western called Deadwood, about a boom town in the Dakota territory, that premiered last sunday night after the sopranos. It was very good, though it did feel as if they went way over board on the cursing. Every other god damn word. Shame. Takes away all affect. Things stop being fowl, and that's no fun. Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane Canary are characters, so it has that going for it.

As to the Sopranos this season, it pretty good. The show has been more mob oriented so far and feels more focused, as if they actually have a decent story to tell, unlike last season's unfocused mess (couple of good episodes, but more filler than anything else). Buscemi actually hasn't really done much of anything yet, nothing to impress me, but I'm confident he'll come around. Remember how long it took Joey Pants to become a factor in Season 3? He wasn't in the first episode, barely in the second. It wasn't until he beat the stripper to death taht he became a power. I think their going the same route with Tony B.

Best story lines so far have been the brewing mafia civil war within the New York family, Aide's dance with the FBI, and the newly released wiseguy Feech LaManna. He's a crazy bastard. He scares me. A lot. Golly.

Damn my slow posting! Anyway, it needs to be on HBO. The FCC wouldn't allow it on the networks. All the cursing, nudity, and beating to death of strippers wouldn't go over very well. Annoying 'responsible' people don't want child to be exposed to such things.

Yes, exactly: here in the UK it's on at 1115, and in countries like Italy even later. Wouldn't that be enough?

Actually I quite liked the 4th series... true, it was more family-orientated than anything else, but that's no bad thing, in my opinion...

"Buscemi actually hasn't really done much of anything yet, nothing to impress me, but I'm confident he'll come around. Remember how long it took Joey Pants to become a factor in Season 3? That's cool by me, as long as they use him well... what's his role exactly?

He plays Tony's first cousin, Tony B. Their mothers were sisters. Buscemi's is Aunt Quinn. I think she was the one that was arrested with Livia in the airport at the end of season two. He's also related to Christopher distantly, since chris' mother's madien name is Blundetto, same as Tony B's. Him and Chris are connected somehow in the distant past, back in Italy. He's actually more closely related to christopher than Tony is. Actually, I don't think Tony's related to Christopher at all.

Tony B. got arrested doing a job in the mid eighties that Tony was supposed to be in on, but he got jumped or something so he couldn't go along. Tony B. got pinched and went away for twenty years, while Tony stayed out and became boss. Tony and his cousin were like brothers growing up, and he feels guilty and wants to get him set up in something, but Tony B. wants to go straight, being that he's got a second chance now, and is trying to get a lincese to be a massage therapist. In the mean time, to make money, he's working a schmuck job driving a truck for a laundry company.

He could be an interested character. There's a couple ways they can go with him. He could actually stay legit, and thus be one of the few characters on the show with a conscious and morals, which would of course infuriate Tony, to whom he would serve as a foil. Or he could be holding a grudge and want revenge. Or it could be some third thing.

Also, Tony's living in his mom's house like a slob, with Artie Bucco as roommate.

Christopher is Carmella's nephew, not Tony's (except through marriage)

Here's my big prediction for this season: Christopher is going to get killed and Carmella is either going to run back to Tony or blame him for Chris's death. They've been teasing Chris's death since the 2nd season (when he was gunned down) and even though he's my favorite character, i feel it coming

I didn't know Chris was Carmela's nephew, rather than Tony's. Doh!
Anyway, I can see why he's your favourite character, but Tony rules...

i can't wait for that tape with episdoes 2-? and the last curb your enthusiasm to arrive

Christopher isn't Carmela's nephew, he's her first cousin once removed. Her uncle is his grandfather.
Its also been said that Dickie Moltasanti was like an older brother or uncle to Tony, so that his son, Christopher, is like a nephew to Tony. This actually comes up in the third episode.

touche - snap, i must be losing my mind!

HBO is really a phenomenal breeding ground for innovative tv shows. even though i didn't like Sex and the City much, it was unique, as is just about every original series they've done, going back to the Larry Sanders show and Dream On.

Stop it!
I can't wait, but I don't want to hear anything about what's gonna happen.

In France the show is at one o'clock in the morning, so very few people knows it's excellent, but there's some fans.

Great stuff, I have 1-4 on DVD, so 5 should be out here soon. It will be interested in how they finish off 6, but will be a pity as The Sopranos is the best t.v. show out there.

Dosen't the sopranos make it to a 'normal' channel after a certain amount of time over there. Like here they show it on E4 first and a few months later it makes it to channel 4, E4 being a digital channel and Channel 4 a standard terrestrial one. Or is it just HBO or nothing?

wow that really sucks ass for you guys. We gennerally get everything after a certain amount of time, but we do have to pay an extortionate TV liscence fee that only counts for 2 terrestrial channels. damn you BBC

i think they'll kill tony at the end of the series to kill all chances of a "reunion" or something

curb your enthusiasm is a half hour, mostly-improved comedy staring Larry David, creator of Seinfeld. he plays himself and its basically his misadventures through life, always involving VERY awkward situations and others getting mad at him. Richard Lewis, Jeff Garlin, Ted Danson, Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Michael York and Mel Brooks are just some of the people who have guest starred over the past two seasons. it is VERY VERY funny.
