I would say the first FB and the C album. It defined the style they would expand upon in later albums. |

I agree, I got different feelings for every single one, and they are pretty much good. Personally, top to bottom, Dog in the Sand is my favorite. Mostly, I always loved los angeles, but then decided to give his other stuff a try, and then when I got dog in the sand, songs like st francis dam disaster, bullet, dits, they were blowing my mind. A close second, however, has to be Black Letter Days. Straight up, this album will blow your ass, I rock out to it numerous times a week, and it has my fav two songs - cold heart of stone and i will run after you |

I'm with Derek. My opinion changes all the time. I don't think one sticks out more than another for me. TOTY is definitely not a top album for me, though. Too many mediocre songs.

TOTY! Orange is also up there vying for first place. Then DITS, BLD, SMYT, COR, Pistolero, Brown. In no particular order.
Mediocre & Frank Black = undefined.

Show Me Your Tears, definitely. I thought I would rate it lower after a few months of repeated listening, but it didn't happen. I'm still convinced it's Frank's best album ever.

I could not possibly disagree with Ramona any more. Aside from Dog In the Sand, the only possible Catholics album that I might consider his best is Devil's Workshop. SMYT is a terrible album for Frank. I mean absonlutely terrible, imho. I could never comprehend how on earth anyone could consider SMYT better that 1993 Frank Black. That album is so incredibly amazing...........it just sounds like so much effort was put into layering and layering the mix (for example, at least three keyboards in Los Angeles) and writing some of incredibly experimental and eccentric tunes that actually have direction insted of being weird for the sake of weird (for example, "Parry the wind High, Low" has a really weird chord progression at the end - I count five chords, each for the same three beats...which is odd in itself, but in addition to that, the drums are in 4/4; yet it's a very catchy song), but I respect Ramona's opinion. To each their own.

Well, I get what you are saying but I think music is so personal and that is the point. The orange/yellow album just is not as moving or lovely to me as SMYT and that is the kind of thing I really like. Of course, I LOVE the OY album too - I have said it before - it is like picking your favorite kid! It is also always changing for me, it just depends what is going on with me in my life I guess. SMYT came out at a shitty time in my life and I just latched onto it and loved it. My gramma died in July and her name was Loraine and then I am listening to Goodbye Loraine, I mean...HELLO?! It's just something that goes to the heart and you can't really get anymore meaningful than that. And that is not even my favorite song on the CD - it is probably my least favorite - but I love it. L O V E I T.
And then FRANK BLACK has Ramona on it and Ten Percenter and Parry which are all fucking awesome songs. Did you see the SONGS THAT SAVED MY LIFE thread? Ramona is there for me, and somedays that CD is all I listen to. It's just where I am at at that moment, what I am thinking and most of all, what I am feeling. It's MUSIC and I adore it.
Like you said, to each their own. |

It's different albums at different times, but TOTY seems to be my favourite more often than the rest.

Very hard to choose, but probably DITS at the moment. Still don't need to get CoR, Pistolero, and the first Catholics album though. |

Buy them all, indeed. You lost me on the sphinctor (sic) puckering though. Isn't that usually the reaction to something highly disturbing/disgusting??? Now, the shotgun blast, I can see... that's much of the effect when I smoke a doob (awww lil' doobie!) and listen to Bad, Wicked World. |

I never thought I'd say this, but Frank Black and the Catholics (1998) is really growing on me. I love it.

Frank Black, The Cult of Ray, Dog in the Sand, Devil's Workshop, Show Me Your Tears. I don't understand why everyone thinks "Teenager" is the shit. There are some good songs, but it goes on too long, and the music is too layered. I know the first album is pretty layered too, but it's used to good effect. On "Teenager", it just ruins songs that would otherwise be fine with basic instruments. It just takes up space.
I dig the Catholics stuff, because there's no sound effects, overdubbing, or any "fix-it-in-the-mix" bullshit that pervaded his earlier work. It's just the music. And the fact that it's done live gives it a fresh, warm sound. "Teenager" sounds stale and cold at times. It sounds a bit rushed, too. But maybe 4AD was pushing him for another disc, so he just threw "Teenager" together. So it may not be all his fault.
"Frank Black" is the album that is "the shit" in my honest opinion. Awesome songs, highly original music and lyrics, and the booklet artwork is great!! (the picture on the "Ten Percenter" page would've made a great album cover) :)
Cult of Ray always gets shit on, but I think it's one of his best. Most of the forum members bash this album, but without it, where would this site be? Look at the background of the site...The Cult of Ray logo. What are the first words that greet you when you enter the site..."...Come get Kicked in the Taco!" And what about all of our "cults" in our sigs? You people are ALL closet Cult of Ray lovers. Come out already!!!! Also, without Cult of Ray, you wouldn't have The Catholics!!!!!! (they became Frank's main band after working with him on Cult of Ray.) No Catholics!!!!!!?
Dog in The Sand...worth it just for the best guitar riff in the universe (next to "Hey") on "Blast Off". Awesome lyrics too. And "Hermaphroditos" rocks like a sonofabitch!!!!!
Black Letter Days is an awesome album. Yes, it, like "Teenager" is a double album, but I don't feel any of the songs or music take up or waste space. In fact, the only quip I have about this one, is that Frank didn't split it in half and make 2 brilliant discs out of it. it would be much easier to digest the work split up into 2 albums than 1 lengthy one.
Devil's Workshop is just brilliant from end to end. Short AND sweet.
I've already spoken about how much I love Show Me Your Tears. Safe to say it's his best yet.
The fact is, is that ALL the albums are great in their own way. Well, guess the only way you'll ever know is if you buy 'em up. :)
p.s. that Doolittle one is great too... :)

hello fellow Frank Black lovers! My name is Lauren and I'm from Canada. I am new here and new to Frank's solo work as well. I bought SMYT recently and it has been an incredible experience listening to it. Just wanted to introduce myself and I look forward to reading about Frank's many other solo projects and about the new album! So hello everyone!
I would also love any advice on which past solo projects to venture out for next. see you around |

Thanks for the recommendation Douglas!
Rockmusic84- yes, SMYT is my first Frank album. From your message I suppose it isn't as highly regarded? well, I really enjoy it. I requested 'My Favorite Kiss' on KEXP the other day. I love that interview Frank did at that station...especially the version of Mr.Grieves. |
