I just watched Lost In Translation with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen (did I spell that right?). I thought it was great. The story, if there was one, was mostly told through visuals with a great soundtrack by Kevin Shields (of My Bloody Valentine) playing through much of it. I mean, there was plenty of dialogue, and some funny moments, and the characters did interact and we learned about them, but the visual mood and tone dominate in this film. It's a Sofia Copolla film, which I didn't know until the end. I wasn't surprised since, while it was quite different from The Virgin Suicides, there was that same feel to it. I think I'd like to watch it again without interruptions from my roommate's constant yacking.

I like to watch movies alone. I have the same mentality as Ponyboy in The Outsiders. Watching a film with other people there is likereading a book and having someone looking over your shoulder to read, too. I rarely go to the theatre. If I do, it's usually for social purposes and it's often not a film that I'm gung-ho about seeing. These films I see in the theatres socially are often along the lines of American Pie/Farrelly Brothers/Adam Sandler style movies, and the best way to view them is in the theatre because you have 150 people around you who actually find this stuff humorous and entertaining and they're laughing, and it makes the movie seem more fun since so many people can enjoy it. When I see those type of movies at home by myself, they drag and I see how not funny they are. It's torture. I can't believe I made it through Scary Movie by myself. There was not one funny moment in that entire film.

P.S. Scarlett is absolutely beautiful. But didn't someone post pictures of her here recently where she's gone all alternative punk looking or something. What a shame.

Yeah, Lost in Translation is a beautiful film. Very much a "mood" film. I've quite a few friends with whom I usually agree on films and they disliked the film. I think one has to get with the mood and the pace of the film. I loved that melancholic, sleep deprived feel to it and the soundtrack helped a lot.

I am glad to hear of someone else who likes watching his films alone. I try to go in the morning when the cinemas are empty. I hate when someone goes with me and makes remarks ("....ooh, thats so funny.....") or they become bored and start fidgeting and sighing. I'm sure a decent home cinema system would be the best solution, if only it wasn't so expensive.

i have to say that i was disappointed with the movie.
after reading everyone raving about it, i did not enjoy it or like it as much as i thought i would.

even disregarding the hype, i found it fell flat.

i think there needed to be more of Scarletts norks.

It's spelled Johansson !

Johanssen would be Danish, and Johansson Swedish.
