I've received the new Xiu Xiu cd Fabulous muscles yesterday. Bought because of the very postive Pitchfork review. I've listened to it a few times now but only the first three songs are good, the cd is a bit too art-studenty. Maybe it'll still grow on me......

Are Pitchfork reviews to be trusted because I'm thinking about getting the Sufjan Stevens cd as well?

You might try listening to Sufjan on his website first. http://www.sufjan.com/ Someone on the forum mentioned him recently, I don't really like, but that's just me.
From what I hear and have read, Pitchfork is mostly a bunch of posers and hipsters. They are about as on-the-mark as anyone with a coin and a functioning toss-hand can be.

A site like www.epitonic.com is good, because you can decide for yourself if you like something -there are usually a few free mp3s for each band, and a good synopsis of who they are, along with similar artists linked to the side.

I have Xiu Xiu's "A Promise", and I cannot get into it. I'll keep trying, becuase everyone (mostly Pitchfork and the like) say they're brilliant, but I'm just not getting it.

Did we decide how to pronounce that yet (Sufjan)? And Xiu Xiu too, for that matter. I always say "Zu Zu", like "Za Za Gabor", that soft z/j sound.

OfferW: Rarely has a pitchfork review led to something I've liked. The only thing they came through on was Dismemberment Plan. Did you already buy TV ON THE RADIO, cause you should buy that instead. And maybe pick up the MADVILLIAN album that comes out on tuesday.

Wow, am I the only one who thinks pitchfork is on the mark 99% of the time? I've read reviews there for albums I already had and I was like woah, I can't believe someone summed up an album exactly as I heard it.

pitchfork SOMETIMES is good, but usually they're too busy preserving their elitist status to be fair about anything.

www.allmusic.com is the most accurate and professional review site - none of the pretention found at pitchfork

Yep, I've been using allmusic for a long time now. Their reviews of Frank's stuff were a bit off the mark though and I lost patience. I'll definitely think twice before believing Pitchfork again though. Over here we have absolutely no radio stations playing the stuff I like so it is hard to find good music, I've always had to rely on NME and other mags from the UK. The NME has become realy shitty nowadays (In the good old days it introduced me to the Pixies, The Smiths, New Order, Stone Roses....)

Yesterday I had a broadband internet connection installed so now I'll download and then decide before I buy.

I like the epitonic site, thanks apl4eris!

The Xiu Xiu cd is slowly growing on me but I'd say it is more a 6/10 than 8/10.

The allmusic review is very positive: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70403220140360699&sql=A4ifqoa9awijp

I went on allmusic to see what it's like and I remember being there before. No sir, I don't like it. I guess I'm a hipster (at least that's what my girlfriend says), I think I'll stick with pitchfork. I won't go into too much detail why I don't like it but after I read this review of the Sebadoh masterpiece "The Freed Weed" I stopped looking:

The epitome of lo-fi, these 47 skeletal bits-of-songs were recorded by Lou Barlow and Eric Gaffney long before their Sebadoh days. Collects their first two self-released cassettes. Only for the curious or the collector. — John Bush

Hey, that's great, wilhelm. I found it a couple years ago, and it has been a great resource. I have found that since the people that do the reviews are people that are fans, you get a better idea of the band as a band, not a commodity to criticize. I have no idea how the site makes its money, but the way it is designed is a big plus. The cross-references to other bands that you might like is great. Of course, the free mp3s help a lot. You might want to check out the "Blackbox" where you can set up your own radio playlists.

Another site I love is www.warprecords.com, but that has different free music, radio, etc. much more electronic stuff.

I guess I have found most of my new music through those 2 sites, and a couple of record label mailing lists, for the last several years. I'm sure the local independant record stores love me for it. We buy a crapload of music. Another good source of difficult to find music and reviews is www.insound.com

whoops! Didn't mean to ramble so much!

Ramble on, the more places there are to look out for music the surer I am of finding something exciting soon.

I've gotten into the Xiu Xiu cd a bit more though. I'd still say there are a few realy bad songs on there but the opening song is very, very good. It's called Crank Heart, the second song I Luv The Valley is also quite good. If anyone is curious try and download those two songs and give them some time. Xiu Xiu certainly has potential.
