So the person I was supposed to stay with in Oakland the week of the Davis show is quite probably moving before then. :( Im from Philly, does anyone know of any somewhat cheap places to stay in the general area? We wanted to hang out in San Francisco for a couple days, so anywhere in SF or Davis or the surrounding areas is great! Also what is public transportation like over there (ive never been to CA) And any suggestions on things we should see/do while in SF would be appretieated! Thanks guys!

SF is about 80 miles from Davis and the only public transportation between the two is Amtrak. If you're going to hang out for a couple of days, Davis would be pretty boring. I would consider either getting a hotel in SF (sorry I don't have any recommendations) or get hotel further out (Oakland, Fairfield) and rent a car. If you had a car you could spend a day in Napa (wine tasting) or drive to the coast north or south of the bay area. However, there's certainly enough to do in SF for a few days. Just wander from restaurant to restaurant (Chinatown, Little Italy, ect.). |

Davis is a super cute little town! not exactly the best place for clubbing, but a cute little bike friendly college town.
i stayed at the best western University Place when i was down there last time. it was nice and clean. and they accept dogs. |

you have to stay in San Francisco. you'll have the best time. and you won't need a car.. they have excellent excellent public transportation.
just find a way to get from Davis to SF and stay there.. you won't regret it. pretty much any place in the City would be fine because it's so small, you can esaily get around the whole city on Bart or even on foot. like darwin says, just wandering around in SF is entertainment in itself. it's such a beautiful city.
Chinatown, Little Italy, the Haight district, Fisherman's Wharf (go have some clam chowder. very touristy, but you have to go if it's your first time).. all the restaurants in Little Italy are amazing.. there are plenty of great music venues.. check out the SF Weekly before you go.
i'll try to remember the hotel i stayed at before in Union Square (i've only had to stay in a hotel there once) which was pretty cheap and centrally located. |

Okay I was looking at priceline and found a couple hotels. I can't tell if th "Mosser" is cute and quirky or if its crap. I dont know how wild I am about sharing a bathroom. Sigh. Any suggestions in SF would be helpful.
Also we are flying into Oakland, is transportation from there to SF easy?
Planning sucks. |

I'm fairly sure that you're not going to be able to catch a train back to the Bay Area after the show. In Davis, there is a Best Western downtown that is relatively reasonable and very close (.5 mile) to Freeborn Hall. |

it just occurred to me, if you're poor college students you might want to stay at this youth hostel called the Green Tortise. http://www.greentortoise.com/
i think you can make reservations and it's in a good location. plus, you might find some cool people to hang out with .. international travelers etc.. if you're up for that.
a friend of mine from Australia stayed there once, and i picked him up from there.. it didn't seem like a bad place to me. it's the usual hostel thing though, where you'll most likely have to share a room etc.. and there might be a curfew (which would suck). might want to look into that..
here's the direct link to the SF site.. you can even book online.. http://www.greentortoise.com/san.francisco.hostel.2.html

if you fly in to oaktown, you can catch a bus/shuttle right in front of the airport for a dollar, i think. just ask for the bus to the bart and someone should be able to help you out. that will take you about 1-2 miles to the BART station (the oakland coliseum station) (bart is like the bay area's subway). http://www.bart.gov/index.asp
then you can go to the city from there, probably you're cheapest bet. one way oaktown to sf about 3.50-4 bucks. but depending on where you're staying in the city, bart might not do the trick 100%. and you might have to take muni. http://www.sfmuni.com/home/home50.htm
i've only taken muni a few times cause i never have the need to, so i have no tips for you there, sorry.
no recommendations on where to stay in the city or oakland, cause i live here and have never stayed in a hotel here. but amtrak to davis would do the trick and then the night of show stay in davis. then you can head back to sf the next day.
if you're into record shopping you must check out amoeba records, http://www.amoebamusic.com/Home1.html
2 locations, berkeley and SF. i find more stuff at the berkeley one for my tastes, but everyone else i know likes the SF store better. and it bigger too. the sf store is on haight street and theres some good shops around there if interested in that and it's near golden gate park too.
the berkeley shop is on telegraph which has a bunch of shops too and is worth checking out.
SF chinatown can be fun too, but i only go for dvd's and vcd's so not sure on where's good to eat there.
but if you like vietnamese food and are in oakland, jack london square area, check out le cheval at 11st and clay. awesome food, but gets packed at night.
and at the end of april will be the sf film fest schedule isn't up yet, but they usually get some great films. http://www.sfiff.org/fest04/index.html
walking across the golden gate bridge is totally cool too. it's free. i still haven't been to alcatraz but i think that'd be cool too.
http://www.foopee.com/punk/the-list/ check here for others shows in town when you're here.
http://www.sfstation.com/
http://www.sfgate.com/
might have some useful stuff for you.
if you tell how long you'll be here and what some other things you might be interested in doing, i'll try to give you some more recommendations.

Wow! You guys are all fantastic! Floop- thanks so much, we reserved a private room at the Green Tortoise Hostel today! And good news, no curfew!
Darwin- We are most likely gonna stay at that Best Western the night of the show, if we cant get back to SF that night. The only problem arrises in that our flight is out of San Francisco at 8am the next morning, and we are still not quite sure the best way to get to the airport early enough.
Whats the best way from SF-Davis?
By any chance is anyone making the trip? We could pay you for gas if we could catch a ride. Were not scary I swear haha! |

Wow, 8am flight. The amtrak web page shows a train leaving Davis at 4:42am. You could take it to Berkeley and then take BART to the airport. Maybe someone in the Bay Area can suggest better connections.
There's going to be alot of people driving back to the Bay Area after the show. I would try starting a new thread asking for a ride. Someone I bet will come through. Or, find someone +21 to rent a car for you. |

try this, www.craigslist.org
make sure you're in the sf bay area region, then the rideshare board. it's under community. www.craigslist.org/rid/" target="_blank">http://www.craigslist.org/rid/
or go to the music forum and ask around. or maybe post in the tickets forum, saying davis pixies need ride back or something. |

darwin- ya I saw the amtrak leaving at 442, it just makes me nervous that wed miss our flight or something.
If we could find a ride back to SF Wed night after the show, we could just stay at the hostel an extra night and it'd be much easier to catch our plane the next day.
I will post a new thread and check craiglist...you guys have been soooo incredibly helpful! Thanks so much! |
