Don't forget The Happening. I think their most "epic" songs are on Bossanova. All Over the World is fucking genius and The Happening is just about the most perfect song ever. Seriously...listen to how all of the instruments fit together so seamlessly. The vocals go perfectly with the chords, sheer brilliance. Blown Away is another great song. I don't think it's like Doolittle at all. If anything, it's the production (Thanks to Norton) that strikes that familiar bell too many times. I really wish they had stayed with Albini...

I largely agree with Mr. Futon here. Bossanova has epic, majestic, and usually highly polished songs. I really see "Velouria" as more similar to songs like "Ana" and "Havalina" (not to mention "All Over The World" and "The Happening") than to anything on Doolittle. Stuff like the theremin in "Velouria" and the sonnet-esque ending of "The Happening" really wouldn't have worked as well on Doolittle, which was generally noisier and more raw (although not as much so as Surfer Rosa). I kind of see Doolittle as a transition between the raw and the polished, while Trompe Le Monde is kind of an anything-goes album in that respect.

I have to say that Gil Norton is probably THE best commercial producer ever. He can take a band like the Pixies and make them sound radio-friendly without losing the rock and roll thrills. That's REALLY fucking hard to do!
