Just Johnny. The other guys were avowed Liberals. Hated Reagan and everything.
I hate to see Johnny trotted out by Republicans like they have started doing the last couple of weeks. They denounce the cult of celebrity when it is Barbra Streisand or some other liberal, but, then they trot out Johnny Ramone when they have stumbled across him.
He's a celebrity, who in the world gives a damn what his politics are? Or Barbra Streisands for that matter. Go make a damn record. |

No, I think the first sign of the Apocalypse was Brian Wilson announcing the SMiLE tour last year. Second sign is the Pixies reuniting. Now a punk band (well, member of) supports Bush. What's next?

Johnny has always been one to support the republicans, right? I personally think it would be worse if Johnny were supporting a communist. "Commando" has the line 'don't talk to commies'. Based on the article, I am under the impression that Johnny is still against communism.

i always thought that the ramones lyrics were against oppressive authority in general.that includes Reagan and the communists.and Johnny's opinion doesn't make any difference now that the group doesn't exist anymore and half of the members are dead and can't reply.Take this as another rockstar eccentricity.

Here's a little insight on the repub punk phenomenon.
http://www.gopunk.com/gp/faq.php
Excerpts from GOPunk:
"Punks have wacky hair and nose rings. Isn't that in direct opposition to conservative ideology?
Not at all: We are conservative — from a Constitutional standpoint. Defending the Bill of Rights isn't the same as being morally opposed to body piercing and hair dye (mine is currently blue.) Contrary to popular opinion, it's entirely possible to be for free speech, personal property, and gun owner's rights while at the same time sporting funky hair styles and messed up leather jackets. ....
The Democrats are supposed to be the party of the people. Shouldn't you be supporting them?
Let's make one thing clear: today's Democratic Party is a vile socialist organization, thriving on hate, fear, and class-warfare. The upper echelons of the DNC are the ultimate social parasites; they can only thrive at your expense. If you're not suffering, they can't benefit. Welfare, universal health care, unions, and many other Democrat favorites are all fine sounding ideas that actually do nothing except increase the government's control of you and your family.
If you're so against government control, shouldn't you be Libertarians? Why stick with the GOP?
The Libertarian movement isn't a bad one. But, as with anarchy, it's poorly suited to the world in which we live. The Liberal Democrats are striking away our freedoms each chance they get, hiding beneath the sheep's clothing of "civil rights" and "compassion" as they wage war against the Constitution. It is a war, and the Libertarian Party is as effective at protecting us from Liberal Democrats as Switzerland was at ridding the world of Hitler. The GOP is our best hope of preserving, and in some cases reacquiring, the freedom's our founding fathers intended."

The Ramones were produced by Phil Spector who worked for the government doing mind control projects involving musicians and groups like the Ramones and John Lennon.

The Republican party supports Bush on the American invasion of Iraq right? How can any punk organisation support the Republican party then?

johnny has always been outspoken with his politics - i suggest everyone seeing "hey! we're outta here!" the documentary/concert film of the ramones last show in LA. johnny talks then about how he and joey always disagreed on politics.
personally, i'm very liberal, but i relaly don't care if friends/musicians take the other side. we need both sides to make progress in our country and there are so many other important things than just political affiliation to gauge people on.
is it a bit strange? yes. dissappointing? not really - i don't think the warped tour crowd is all going to vote GOP now

Oh, I definetly care if my friends are liberal or not. To me, being conservative means grouping yourself with issues that I just don't agree with, down to the core of ME. Like gun control, choice, gay marriage, the environment, (the list goes on and on). I can't be friends with someone who is so opposite of my where I am at with my life, and the people I love. And I am not saying that ALL conservatives believe that stuff, but as a GROUP they do - and I just don't need that in my day to day life. It's too upsetting. |

Really? I lot of people who don't agree with you are still nice people and deserve to be treated friendly, imo.

I am not entirely sure what "I lot of people" was supposed to be but I never said I wouldn't be friendly to someone who didn't agree with me. |

At least he dos'nt support the musical Bush....seriously, though, I do remember an interview with Joey Ramone(R.I.P)where he points out that Johnny's politics were extreme right-wing, and his own extreme left-wing. It musta been lots of fun for Johnny when a politcal debate got going backstage.

Thanks for noticing that, Emily! I saw that I wrote "I lot" instead of "A lot" and I was all 'oh boy, I should edit that', but I did not. I'd rather create a new post in which I can apprise you of that I meant "a lot" and not "I lot". And that's a good point; I guess you don't have to BE friends with someone in order to treat them in a friendly manner.

Don't forget that the majority of Democratic senators supported the invasion. And Clinton bombed Iraq, too. The two parties aren't as different as some people like to think. |

Adnan, it'd be real swell if you could edit the name of this topic. Seeings how only one Ramone supports Bush, and the others would never agree with him if they were still alive, I think it's wrong to say that The Ramones support Bush. I'm aware that it has been clarified in this topic that not all Ramones are Republican, but just seeing the words "Ramones Support Bush" all the time makes me cringe. Could you change it to "Johnny Ramone Supports Bush." I understand this seems a bit silly, but it'd give me peace of mind.

Yes, it's like saying "Nirvana committed suicide," or "The Sex Pistols murdered their junkie girlfriends." |

the felling is mutual.
it all started when Dubya would ditch out of Yale and head for NYC. he would anonymously slip into the punk scene. often ending up at Ramone shows. when the party was over or all the coke gone, he would head back to the ivy walls of intellectual enlightenment.
