Hey guys, don't mean to bum you out, but I have been a huge Frank Black fan for many years. This is my first post, and I am seeking some help. I have a support system, but it has not been enough. I do not know where else to turn. I have alcohol probelems. My best friend got three DUI's and has been alcohol free for 2 years. I continue to ask him how he does it, and ask him for help. But he alone cannot help me. So, although it is laim, I am seeking help from the Frank Black frorum. The only thing I can think of that can get me sober, is the love for music. Unfortunately, music is part of the reason for my problems. Out of curiousity, is there any members whom can enjoy their lives and music without the toxic effects of alcohol? I am stuck in a rut. I need help. I am 26 years old, and old I feel. I have half of my life and then some ahead of me, and it is up to me what to do with it. Why waste my life? Trust me, I have done enough partying to last a life time. How do I stop? How can one enjoy life without ruining it? Yes, I am being sappy right now. And yes, I believe that one should party and have fun. But, when it rules ones life, life is all we have. I want to be around for awhile. I want to hear Frank untill I pass. It is you, forum members that I seek adivice. Sorry for bringing you down into my world, and for an excessively long message. Help Me. Comatose22. "Happy are my mind and my soul and my heart".

I can enjoy any music with alcohol and only good music without alcohol. But this isn't helping you much, is it?
OK, let's just say that you should hang around with people who are sober, and make some projects in you life.
I’m not sure what this could mean / I don’t think you’re what you seem / I do admit to myself / That if I hurt someone else / Then we’d never see just what we’re meant to be |

Comatose- If you really love music, REALLY love it, you don't need alcohol to enjoy it. Everything is relative, and if you have often (for years) associated getting drunk w/ going out w/ hearing music w/ smoking cigarettes...etc. etc., these mental habits are very hard to break out of. Occupy your time with hobbies...and yes, Adnan is right, you really need to minimize your hang-out time w/ people who drink or have a propensity for binge drinking. It's really difficult because it might mean losing a friend or two, but if you are serious about your proposed life-style change, this is the only option (at least until you have mustered up enough self-control to not be fazed by their actions.)
It's not an easy thing, but if you fully envelop yourself in hobbies, work, romantic relations, and the like...maybe you'll find that there is no more time for haphazard alcohol consumption.
I wish you the best of luck. |

Excellent tip, black fender! The joy you get from knowing that you can create music is amazing. Very fun and time-consuming!

I just got a four track late last year, too. A little digital Boss one. I use Cool Edit Pro, mainly. It's a lot simpler and easier to use than most other programs. Makes editing a breeze, hehe. What equipment do you have? I just have 2 guitars, my 4-track, and an sm-57, hahaha. Ooh, also a Whirlwind EDB1 Direct Box (see picture). That helps a lot...it's nice for an in your face sound.

I find Protools to be over-rated, actually...Over-rated and extremely over-priced...n-Track Studio on the other hand...
http://www.fasoft.com/ rocks. n-Track is wonderful. Download it, use it, love it.

You just don't like it cos you're jealous and you want it. But you haven't got your money-printing machine working so you can't have it. I'm in the same situation. I'm currently working with a palm-top Zoom 3-track, mm-mmm.

Comatose, There's a lot of good advice above. Your friend has been sober 2 years, this person will be a great resource for you. The first year can be very hard, do not try to do it all by yourself. Get that support going before you really need it. There are AA meetings in every city, and they provide some of the best support and info anywhere for free. You will need a lot of information. Like others said above, you are going to need to change who you hang out with and where. Make new friends with people who love music but don't use, it would be easy to meet people in AA. Learning to play is a great idea! I was a little older than you when I started playing bass, and if I can do it you can too, believe me. It is really just another way to enjoy music, and you get in deep with it. People who drink will probably not support that you are quitting. But you are doing the right thing, so good for you. After the first 2-3 months your health will improve and you won't feel so old anymore. 26 is a great age to be. Please do get help from AA, this is not all about doing it yourself or just willpower. Be well!

Comatose,
Like Black Fender suggested, pick up an instrument and learn how to play. Maybe look to find official help, like AA or something. If there's anyone in your family who could help, go to them. You don't need any kind of drug to appreciate music. Anyway, I wish you good luck and hope you can kick your problem.
Good luck! |
