Monday evening, Belle and Sebastian, my favorite non-catholic band, were playing in Paris. I know I'm a little boring with this (I have already started a Belle and Sebastian thread), but I just can't help saying all the time how good they are.
Franz Ferdinand, who were supposed to open for them, were canceled. Official reason : illness. But I guess Franz Ferdinand didn't survive their last show in Sarajevo
B&S are becoming increasingly professional, from shy students they are turning into skilled musicians without loosing that naive feeling from the beginning. And their singer, Stuart, is about the nicest and the funniest person I have ever seen. I even wrote a poem about their gig :
The grass is green The sky is blue Belle and Sebastian are great!
Have some wine, please, don't run away. |

Playlist (not in that order):
Expectations Judy and the dream of horses Dear Catastrophe waitress Piazza New York catcher Step into my office, baby Dog on wheels Seeing other people Get me away from here I'm dying You're just a baby Sleep the clock around Comment te dire adieu (Sarah sang this French song written by the great Serge Gainsbourg)
etc (I can't remember, but there was some more stuff from the last album).
Have some wine, please, don't run away. |

You guys are soooo lucky to see all these great bands. Belle and Sebastian are brilliant. How does the crowd behave at the shows? Somehow I cannot imagine a lot of wild dancing and crowd surfing going on. I think the crowd at the Go Betweens show (which you have rightly warned me no-one on this board will get frenzied about, boohoo) will be very alike. |

Actually, Le Grand Rex, in Paris, is a rather classy venue, with leather seats etc. So no "crowd surfing". This doesn't mean there is not a nice athmospere : at one point, Stuart asked if someone would like to come and sing or dance on the stage. Unfortunately, they didn't do it this year, but they did last time and it was pretty funny. There is some kind of a silent dialogue between the band and the crowd. Someone (with a scotish accent, probably an expat) told Stuart "Move to Paris", and he answered, saying "give me two months, and I will speak French like a Parisian"...they tried to speak a little French (Stuart can only say one sentence, "vous avez une tenue coquette", which is still much better than the usual "voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir?"), and that is always appreciated by the French public. Sarah speaks French pretty well, but was too shy to do it. They are really all truly kind and you can feel it from the beginning.
Hey, I understand you feel disappointed because all these bands don't come to South Africa. But, man, you've got Jeffrey's Bay and Charlize Theron. Stop complaining.
