abysmilliard writes "A young Ukrainian woman has posted a photo journal of her motorcycle rides through Chernobyl and the area surrounding it. Included are pictures of the now-emptied city, maps of current radiation levels, and a discussion of how the area has changed. While the english is quite broken, it's often rather surreal, as well, with quotes like, 'I don't know how sound the silence to those tourists that they can not stand it, but to me after hitting a red line on my bike tacho it sound like all those ghosts cursing 1100cc kawasaki engin.'"
This is well worth your visit (I think). What a rarity.

That is properly eerie. I happened to be listening to some of what I would call my 'soothing' mp3s at the time, and that is a strange experience looking at those pictures.
Definitely a Pompeii vibe going on - I'm sure there must be nowhere else quite like that, if only because other evacuated cities are looted or trashed or whatever.
The part which moved me the most was thinking that on my fourth birthday, there were people stood on a rooftop watching a strange glow on the horizon, not realising that it was the worst nuclear disaster there's ever been...
As I said, strange...

I don't think that I at any point found myself thinking that those pictures were beautiful. Is it because I was aware of the disaster when it occured, and old enough to recognize the enormity and the implications? I have a pretty dark and twisted outlook on life and my art, but that website jerked my heart out through my brain.
One of the most poignant remarks was the account of the Oncology Hospital accepting hundreds of radiation victims, when the Chief Oncology Surgeon died 40 days after the event. During the aftermath, the USSR was telling its citizens that radiation had not been proven to/did not cause cancer.

pretty mind blowing some of the stuff... it's easy to forget about these things that happened so long ago (well in our lives, not in the greater scheme of things of course) and just because there's not much in the media about it anymore kind of assume things are better, or it's no longer such a problem... an eye opener. god bless the internet.

Very, very sad. Also a strange beauty to it all........
I've Ukranian friends, husband and wife, who studied in a town 300km from Chernobyl when it all happened. They worked in South Africa for a few years and during this time she became pregnant. During the pregnancy the sonar showed that there might be something wrong with the baby and they had to consider aborting the baby. They were traumatized of course but decided to go ahead and have their child. The baby turned out fine and today she is a beautifull kid. Unfortunately I do not see them often anymore as they now live in Canada but whenever I think if them and the girl I am reminded of Chernobyl. |

I find it very fascinating...the fact that there's an entire modern (somewhat modern) city completely empty. I'd love to visit it someday but I'm afraid of the radiation. I love love love old architecture (that's why I can't wait to be in England). Thanks for the link, Obfuscate...amazing photos.

it is impossible to fathom what it must feel like travelling through not just a deserted city, but one with such a frightening history.

i couldn't get to the page but anyway .some time ago i read this article (that came with many photos) that demonstrated that chernobyl is now rich in wildlife.in the highly "hot" areas there are colonies of deer , rare birds and even some bears that weren't present at the time of the explosion,when chernobyl was a soviet industrial city.many farmers that never saw the goverment money were forced to return to their highly radioactive farms and they still live there.cancer statistics are in tetris-score levels but life is still possible under heavy radiation.statistics are not available for animal life but the number of species that repopulated the zone indicate that human presence is far more dangerous than radioactivity.there were some great photos of deer in a forest with a chernobyl reactor in the background.that was really weird since i always thought that radioactivity was lethal in the short term but it seems that the old terms of evolution are still valid and hopefully man will not be able to completely destroy life on this planet even if he tries to.
i'll try to find the magazine and \or post a link to this.it's really amazing.

You might want to try the site again in a few days, mun chien, as it covers a lot of the ground you speak of. Estimates of the death toll from the close aftermath range from 120,000 to half a million. They really have no set numbers. I think the website has been what is called "slashdotted", coined to describe the effect that a mention of a website on www.slashdot.org has on the website's server. Looks like it is in "404 land" for a while. Ironically, the site has become a ghost town.
From what the pictures and text describe of the area most directly effected by the catastrophe, no one lives there at all, save a few border guards, on the road. It is not as safe as you think. We have deer in the southwest United States that are so full of radiation, from eating grasses and plants growing in soil effected by the tests that had been performed over previous years, that you are warned/forbidden to eat them. I wish I could feel as optimistic as you seem.

i wish i could feel optimistic too since i don't trust much goverments.i was merely fascinated by the fact that a heavily radioactive site could be so populated by life.unfortunately it is certain that chernobyl will affect the health of many generations to come,including mine.i still remember the tv screaming about the fallout and all the advice about not eating fresh stuff etc.i was too young to understand at the time but thinking about it now gives me the creeps.

Yeah, I remember sensationalist headlines in the newspapers saying that the sheep on the North Wales hillsides were being conntaminated by fallout. Don't know if it was actually true or proven in the end. I was pretty much a vegetarian at that point so it didn't really concern me but it was certainly a big worry.
I have actually met someone who worked in the fire service who attended to the disaster. He is a fine fellow from Belarus and is a friend of a friend. He has had some health problems but is still with us although I understand that a lot of his colleagues have died of various cancers over the last decade or so. |

Hey thanks, Valhalla! I meant to check back in on this. It looks like the site has been drastically changed - there is a lot of new content, and pictures she must have recently taken (this Spring).
It looks like a lot of the old stuff is there still, thank goodness. She must have gotten so much traffic from being highlighted as a story on www.slashdot.org. That site is like a vortex!
