hey again? i've been working on some stuff for velouria. I worked out this lead bit. It's not actually in the song, but it sounds awesome played over the chords. basically, it's frank's singing tabbed out on the guitar
Bbm f# -- D# B -------- F# Bbm -------- F# D# --------- B F# |--------------------------------------------------------------------------- |-------------------------------6----------------6-6----------------------- |-6-8------6-8-6-8-----6-6-8----6------6-6-8------8------6-8-6-6------- |------8-------------------------------------------------------------------- |--------------------------------------------------------------------------- |--------------------------------------------------------------------------- |---------------------------------------------------------------------------
enjoy

Someone brought it to my attention that they tune UP a half step on this song.

I noticed on the Pixies webcast from saturday that Frank uses a capo on the first fret for this song, so I guess that's right. But I also have another video where he doesn't (but I guess that guitar could be tuned up like you said).

Frank uses a capo on the record. if he isnt using one then he and the band are playing the song down half step (starting on E than F) same applies to the Happening. Capo 1st Fret.

capo stuff confuses me, because when its say at the fifth fret and they say play E, it's actually an A coming out right? i'm a little more confused by this... what are the ACTUAL chords, for velouria (first two chords will be fine) |

PixieSteve this ones for you; Velouria
---0-----0-----1----5-----5-------6--- ---0-----0-----1----5-----5-------6--- ---1-----1-----2----6-----6-------7--- ---2-----2-----3----7-----7-------8--- ---2-----2-----3----7-----7-------8--- ---0-----1-----1----5-----6-------6---
---E----E/F----F---A----A/A#---A#
these are the chords to Velouria on a standard tuned guitar. Juat add a capo on the 1st fret if you wanna play along to the cd.
if you dont have a capo, like me back then, the opening chord would be F (moved the E chord up one fret to counter no capo. hope i dont sound patronising!) and yep capo on the 5th is A, the 3rd is G etc..but to be honest, dont worry bout chord names, that all comes eventually. you can tell better by sound than by reading any tablature.
hope this helps...a little...

so the first chord is actually an F? Ok. way to confuse me by saying you play an E at first! ;)
i probably understand more than you think, i just got a little confused with the capo stuff, and tuning down etc.
i understand why you would need a capo now, so that it can be played it F whilst still being able to to the bass note changing thing. |

yeah, if you have a capo on the 1st and you play open E, thats really F. you can still do the bass note thing without the capo. but to play along to the cd the song sounds in F, so i think most people would learn the song playing F barre chord first. but then the capo thing kicks in, yeah, it makes that bass thing so much easier with less fingers on the board.
capo on records - havalina, Happening , Velouria, Rock music , Palace of the Brine , Letter to Memphis (standard d-tuned on BBC no capo), dog gone...er and robert onion off the top of my head all use capo on 1st fret. Beatles, norweian wood capo on 3rd fret, In my life capo 1st fret.
nirvana are a good example, they d-tuned all strings alot. you cant play Nevermind all the way through on a standard tuned guitar, come as you are, lithium, drain you and few others are down tuned...think it make it easier to sing as it lowers the notes hence the voice too. In Utero is recorded completely down a half or full step i cant remember which.
