I was watching Drugstore Cowboy at a friend's house the other week(missed the first 40 mins!), and I really enjoyed it....William Burroughs is in it as a junkie ex-priest! Anyway, seeing as FB lives in Portland, Oregon now(tenuous link!)I just thought I'd mention, I believe the film's director (who's from Portland) Gus Van Sant sets most of his movies there, according to an interview I read: I kinda thought Drugstore Cowboy would've been filmed there, and sure enough, on the end-credits it said 'Filmed in beautiful Portland, Oregon'! My Own Private Idaho which I saw years ago is also filmed there. He also did To Die For which was pretty good, Good Will Hunting and the recent Elephant(neither of which I have seen) and that notorious shot-for-shot remake of Psycho, which I only saw the end of, but seemed a bit pointless, although Quentin Tarintino has defended it!

The rather fine writer Raymond Carver was from Portland Oregon too. I saw the remake of Psycho and what I found the most irritating was the soundtrack which worked wonderfully for the original seemed jarring and cheesy and anachronistic in the new one - I mean they updated the the film medium they worked with, colourised it and whatnot, why reproduce the music exactly? Clint Mansell did some cracking work with strings and beats on Requiem For a Dream.
-- "You one of those right-wing nut outfits?" inquired the diplomatic Metzger. Fallopian twinkled. "They accuse us of being paranoids." "They?" inquired Metzger, twinkling also. "Us?" asked Oedipa.

The Requiem music is great-is Clint Mansell in the Brodsky Quartet? That music was remixed and used in a trailer for 'The Two Towers'.

Todd Haynes is also a Portland filmmaker now. origially from the Valley.
not to sound name droppy, but a friend of mine has worked on his past two films, ELEPHANT and GERRY.
his last two films were edited the old fashioned way, cutting on film on a Steenbeck. and he edits himself. pretty cool. |

Elephant won the big prize at Cannes right? I cannot wait to see that one. I liked Van Sant's early pics, even the Cowgirls one with Uma Thurman and her massive thumbs. I think that film must have been done in the North-Western parts of the USA as well, I remember lots of trees in the film. |

Oh, right...Gerry is about two friends who get lost in the desert, it's just out on DVD I think, hav'nt seen it. Also, I forgot about Even Cowgirls get the Blues, which is suppossed to be awful.
....I just found out on the web that his first full film is a little-seen movie called Mala Noche;also, he directed Finding Forester, another movie I hav'nt seen but looks well dodgy-it stars Sean Connery and looks like a cliched load of crap! But then again I hav'nt actually seen it!!

Finding Forrester is cliched and average yes, the kind of film you'd watch on TV and only keep on watching because you're interrested in Connery or Van Sant. Cowgirls is fun to watch because it is so terrible. You have to see Uma's thumbs in it. Looks like an ugly dildo. |
