Hey...I just discovered something on iTunes. I don't know if anybody else has posted this, cause I keep getting Search errors in the Forum. But...in case anyone didn't know (like me), Frank Black appears on Gordon Gano's 2002 CD "Hitting The Ground". It's kinda like a "Duets" CD of Gano with a who's who of alternative special guests like Lou Reed, John Cale, They Might Be Giants, Linda Perry, etc... Check it out - you will NOT be dissapointed.

I hav'nt heard it but I believe PJ Harvey is on ther too....as has been mentioned before, Violent Femmes had a bit of an influence on the Pixies.

I kinda quickly got dissapointed in the CD. I like the FB and PJ Harvey song. Nothing REALLY new from Cale or Reed. |

....and obviously The Velvet Underground were another Pixies influence. Any fans of Reed+Cale's Andy Warhol tribute 'Songs For Drella'? That's a great album.

Hitting the Ground is an awesome album. Bought it when I worked at Best Buy. They played the P.J. Harvey tune (title track) on the in-store promo radio, and I immediately fell in love with it. Then I realized that Lou Reed and John Cale were on it (I'm a big Velvets fan), so that was an added bonus. I didn't know who Frank black was in 2002 when it came out, but I thought his track "Run", was pretty cool. I have a little complaint about that song. His vocals are not up nearly as high as they should be in the mix! For how much he screams, you couldn't tell. But to be honest, the whole album suffers from what I call "overmastering" (the V.U.'s going way into the red when making the master, and not being adjusted so there is no distortion). That could be part of the problem that makes some tracks indiscernable from others and some non existent. I hate to say this, but even some of Frank's albums suffer from this. Especially on "Show Me Your Tears". If you crank Nadine up too loud, it's like Scott and David are going to rip through your speakers and kill you, and then Frank is going to rummage through your entrails!! (a.k.a., drums and bass are too loud, vocal is slightly distorted.) But again, he's recording "old-school", so it won't, and can't be perfect. Plus, my speakers aren't very big, so it might just be MY problem. I wonder if "Run" was recorded using live to 2 track... Anywho, Hitting the Ground is great. I'm a huge Lou Reed fan, but surprisingly, I like John Cale's track, Don't Pretend, better. Other tracks of note are Linda Perry's So It Goes, and Cynthia Gayneau's Merry Christmas Brother, with it's creepy lyrics and dark imagery. Gordon's own, Make it Happen, isn't bad either. But the others are better. A good way to start a solo career? I think not. Having other people sing and play your songs is only going to do one of 2 things: Make people disrespect you for not making "your own album", or, if by some chance people do like it, they're going to think of the people that played and sang on it, and not you, the one who wrote it. Run will always be considered a Frank Black song, simply because he sang on it. No one that has the album will remember that Gordon Gano wrote those words for the singers to sing, and the music for the musicians to play (save for Lou Reed, who co-wrote Catch 'em in the Act with Gano). But with that being said, it's a great album. Definitely worth the coin if you can find it (I believe it went out of print shortly after it's release). Carl, I love Songs for Drella, so much, that I bought the original limited edition velvet digipak case edition off ebay about a year ago. The disc itself is really neat - it's orange!! Tracks of note on SFD: Smalltown, Work, Style It Takes, Starlight, A Dream, Forever Changed, and Hello It's Me. Hello It's Me is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. You could tell John and Lou admired Andy. While the rest of the world mocked him, there were still some who recognized his genius. Lou himself has said that he "wanted to get as much as he could from Andy". And indeed he did. The Warhol scene and the man himself has inspired some of Lou's greatest songs (Walk on the Wild Side, Viscious, Andy's Chest, etc.). Another good one, if you can find it. Hang onto your vinyl copy, offerw. I mean, unless you need a kidney or something. They fetch quite a bit on ebay!

Now, Drella is an awesome album. They even sing their own songs. Despite hours of Reed probably telling Cale they were "his" own... |

rockmusic, this is going to sound rude, but just intended as a friendly suggestion... if you put an empty line between your paragraphs, it'd be a lot easier for folks to read. Or maybe not easier, but more enticing.

'Style It Takes' and 'Faces and Names' are great. A friend told me Cale did 'Venus In Furs' on an electric violin on 'Later With Jools Holland' ages ago.
