Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I think its quite cool: http://www.nme.com/news/107686.htm

SCOTT WALKER has signed a new record deal with cult indie label 4AD.

The star, who first found fame in the 1960s with The Walker Brothers, has not released an album since 1995’s ‘Tilt’. He is best known for his quartet of 1960s albums, ‘Scott’ through to ’Scott 4’.

4AD have also enjoyed a long history, providing home to the US indie dynasty of the Pixies, The Breeders and Throwing Muses.

Walker is expected to begin recording his first material for the label imminently.

Didn't he have a minor hit in the 60's with a cover of the song Jackie, which had the line "in a stupid-ass way" in it? Very vulgar for the 60s.

"You're muckin' with a G here!"

He did indeed...that was a Jacques Brel song - he released a whole album of Brel cover versions which is fantastic but he also is one of the only singers who could make this line sound great:

"How i recall the brothel trucks, the flying flag, the queer lieutenant who slapped our asses as if we were fags...next"

BUT around 1995 he released perhaps one of the greatest albums of ALL time...'Tilt'. This album is like nothing you've heard before, it defies every musical genre and is a work that i have no hesitation in describing as genius.

If Jo is around i would be interested to know if you have any expected released dates for his first 4AD album?

Scott Walker is about to start recording a new studio album - his first since ‘Tilt’, which was released in 1995.

and there's a thread about it on the 4ad forums

Wow, this is great! Some guy was trying to tell me Scott Walker died a couple years ago but I never heard anything else about it. Tilt is one of the most interesting CDs I own, and I greatly look forward to this new one.

So what is it about this Tilt album then? I just know the man for The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More etc., but you've really piqued my interest here.

'Tilt' is possibly the only album that creates a truly successful fusion of classical, progressive and popular music. It is not easy listening (understatement) and it might take some considerable effort to overcome your initial reaction, however WHEN the penny finally drops...well, the scales will fall from your eyes and there will be revelation. Oh yes.

That's a pretty good way of looking at it. It's definitely not easy listening, that's for sure. At first I thought it sounded like really dramatic modern music with quasi-operatic vocal work and what I might once have called an "industrial tinge." Every time I listen to it I realize there was something going on somewhere that had never stood out before, and to me that's one of the best things music can do.

I guess since those numbered records (were there four of them?) his output has been pretty sporadic, but listening to it I think he might just take his time to make sure that he's got something truly different or forward-looking before unleashing it upon the world. I haven't heard much beyond Tilt, but that's the little dream I've created for myself. There was one from the '80s, I think, that I heard one time and it sounded pretty interesting too. Can't remember the name of it now.

Nothing is ever something.

Yes, those quasi-operatic vocals on 'tilt' took me a little while to get used to.

He released an album called 'Climate Of Hunter' in the 70s or 80s which is good but which doesn't move me in the way 'Tilt' does.

I think he adopts an 'I'm not going to release something until i definitely know it's worth releasing' policy regarding his musical output which means that he's not as prolific as FB but if it means he releases something as good as 'tilt' every ten years i'm all for it.

Yeah, I agree that his work seems to be worth the wait, but the man has to be in his 60s by now, right? How many records can he have left?

Have you heard the last 'Pulp' album? I've never gotten round to hearing it but Walker was called in to produce it and I'd be intrigued to see what the bunch of them came up with...

Do you mean Pulp the band? If so, I've only knowingly heard about three or four of their songs, and certainly nothing recent.

Yeah, Jarvis Cocker and Co. - i don't know about Canada but they were pretty big in the UK maybe 9 years ago but I've not heard the new Scott Walker produced album.

Common People was pretty popular for a couple months in '96 or so, but I only ever heard a couple more songs. They didn't really seize me at all so Pulp has kind of leached its way out of my mind. I'd still listen to that new one just for interest's sake, to hear what Scott Walker would do with them.

I don't think there's anything expected at all yet... I think he's literally going into the studio around now - so I guess it depends how long it all takes...!
