Outsight Radio Interview: The King Of France came together in New York City in early 2002 after singer-guitarist Steve "Salad" Salett (Deformo) met* Michael Azerrad at a secret Pixies reunion show in Sedona, Arizona, on New Year's Eve, 2001. On the same flight back to New York they had a conversation about the connection between rhythm and melody. Upon this connection they built the idea for their band and later added a keyboard player they found doing Harry Nilsson songs on harmonium at a subway station. Measured beats and subtle melody recalling Velvet Underground and The Only Ones marks the pre-debut album of material released by Salett as The King Of France, Salad Days. In this interview, Michael discusses the buzz the band is building as well as its formation.
[* i presume they missed this word out]

Sedona's a nice place. Everything is geared toward he tourist though. Magic crystals, and votexes and shit. Lots of New Age Hippies and herbal mind cleansings and shit. Besides everything shuts down at 8pm. I won't go back there. |

yup, amazing scenery... some of the best stuff I've ever seen. On the way home from Sedona we stopped at Montezuma's Castle http://www.desertusa.com/mzm/ I believe this is the "place in the buried west in a cave with a house in it. in the clay the holes of hands you can place a hand in hand". I took a picture of the hand prints where you can put your hands into them. http://www.tenpercenters.com/morgan/hands.jpg

Don't you think if there had been a secret show that word would have leaked out. I mean....THE PIXIES (pre-reunion tour)....absolute major news. Everybody who saw the show would be more than eager to brag about it. |
