My computer (not the one I'm on right now obviously) says it is connected to the internet, but when I open up internet explorer it gives me that "this page can not be displayed" message sayingit's not connected. When I go to my internet connection it says it's connected fine. I have no idea what the problem is. I've tried restarting the computer at least 20 times and disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet at least 30 times, and I've tried unplugging everything and plugging it back in, all of these things with absolutely no success. As soon as I open up internet explorer it says www.msn.com (the homepge) at the bottom and almost immediately it changes to incredifind.com or somethin like that. It stays there loading for a couple of minutes and goes to the "page can not be found" message. When I try to connect to aol it stops at the first step ("looking for connection via tcp/ip" or whatever it says) and says a connection can not be found. Everything worked completely fine before this. I just restarted the computer and connected and it started doing this. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am very computer illiterate and have no dea what to do. Oh and also, I've been able to connect to aol with the 56k modem connection, but even then it does the same thing with the page can't be found thing whenever I try to go to a website. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd also recommend downloading Hijack This http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/ It gives you a list of stuff from your computer so when you post for help you can include it and other people can tell you whats wrong

I just downloaded and then uninstalled zone alarm so I bet that's the problem. How do I reinstall it though if it won't let me get on the internet? I deleted the installer too I think

Another thought, check your temporary internet files and temp folder, they sometimes leave themselves in there

I'll try putting iton a disk from the computer I'm on now. Were you able to uninstall it after that?

Some setting somewhere got fucked up. You installed then uninstalled Zone Alarm? I bet it was still set up under Internet Options to look for the firewall...if it didn't find one it'd just say "Page Cannot Be Displayed" or whatever...were any other internet applications working? I guess AOL wouldn't connect either so it must have been something more major...ah well.

Yes, I did have a friend who uninstalled Zone Alarm and it somehow kept blocking internet activity. I'm not entirely sure, though, that that was the problem here though. According to the description, there was a program running in the background dubbed keenval by Symantec which "is an adware program that redirects the browser to portal sites, which may download more adware." One of those "portal" sites is incredifind.com. I also suspect his local hosts file was changed since he tried accessing msn.com, and was redirected to the other site. I suppose reinstalling Windows will also do the trick, but, I'm not entirely convinced it was a Zone Alarm problem. |

here's my theory:though you uninstalled the firewall something went wrong and some security settings are still on.in the mean time you have some adware installed that hijacks your home page.the badly uninstalled firewall tries to block the new adwared home page while the adware keeps redirecting you to it.so even if the connection is ok the browser fails to work.i never heard about z.a giving that kind of uninstallation problems but here's what you could do:
first of all unistall the firewall by using control panel->add or remove programs.if you already did that:
1:get these freeware programs:regclean, spybot,ad aware and pest patrol 2:install and run regclean then delete all z.a entries(registry keys) 3:install and run the other 3 apps.you should be clean of every adware application. 4:install a new firewall.if you don't want to get a pro firewall get sygate personal firewall that is free and works ok.
