Well, I promised him I'd buy him two beer (Canadian stock, not that light American dreck), so I'm pretty sure he's starting up here simply to collect. :)
I'll keep them nice and frosty for you, Frank.

One night my friends and I drove to Canada for breakfast in Winnipeg. The girl at the counter couldn't figure out the exchange rate, and when we were half way back to South Dakota we realized that Winnipeg paid us to eat there. But everything balanced out last year when Winnipeg stole my cousin's wallet. But now I hold the community in highest esteem for hosting the Pixies. Thank you, Winnipeg. Thank you, Canada. I formally apologize for all of the nasty things I've said about you, though they were in jest.

i am unrepentant about the nasty things i've said. but that's why i'm going to hell.
it's true that American beer is shit, for the most part (compared to some countries, like Belgium for example) but we do have our share of good breweries.. Samuel Adams not to be denied. and tons of smaller breweries throughout..
what do you guys got? Molsen Golden? |

Well, we have a lot on the microbrewery side. Big Rock, Great Western, Sleeman's are three bigger breweries that all do good work. Labatt, Molson, and Kokanee, although they're not my cup of tea, are the equivalent of Bud and Coors I suppose, so comparing them with Sam Adams is like comparing Bud and Guiness. They compare pretty favourably against Bud/Coors/Pil I think. And don't get me started on Busch. Like I always say, there's no good bush in the US. Well, I don't always say that. In fact I've never said it and probably will never say it again.
I think my favourite imported beer at the moment is Stella Artois, though I'm with you Floop, the microbreweries are not to be beat.
EDIT: Addenum - when I was in Ann Arbor I went to an Irish pub that brewed their own stuff and it was as tasty a beer as I've had in a long time. I think I tried four or five different pints that night.

Yeah, Conor O'Neill's was great! I had a stew there with Guiness in the broth which I'd love to steal a sample of. A great pub dish.
I also went to, was it the Arboreum or something like that (all I really remember are the old-fashioned pump taps and the copper bar) and tried some samples of their brew but didn't care for any of it. Maybe I was just not in a beer mood?

Canada rocks. I don't live there, but when I visit I love it. Canadian bowling? So much more superior. And who wouldn't spend an extra 39 cents to get gravy and cheese on your fries at Burger King?
This is why he loves Canada. |

Maybe he likes Canada because his last Winnipeg show sold out in under 7 min's (wonder if thats a reason that the Pixies are doing their first gig here?). Or maybe its the fact that Americas only retreat during a war was against Kanada? * LOL PUSSY YANKIES * |

One thing - I think Frank likes the ganja up here. There was an interview in our local rag when FB&C played here last year...he said he smokes a fair amount of weed...I'm sure the very irrepressive (not to mention hazy) atmosphere really appeals to him. I mean, two shows in Vansterdam? That should be a bit of a give away...
I've got tix for two shows in two nights in two towns here on the abstract prairie and I could sh!t myself, I'm so excited.

Canadian beer sucks just as much as American beer. The only redeeming quality it has is it tends to have a higher alcohol content and therefore you can drink less of the swill to get pissed. Smithwicks Pilsner Urqueil or Guinness for me, thank you.
I've been down to La Crosse, Wisconsin a few times to visit the Bodega Brew Pub (oh no! the web site is gone...please don't leave us!). The first time I was there because Dave's Guitar Shop wasn't open and I had a thirst, it was the first pub I saw.
"Do you have anything on tap?" "No." "Do you have any Pilsners?" "Well," He throws a book at me, "this is our list." The list consisted of about 300 beers. "Wow, this is amazing!" "Yes, we have the SECOND largest selection in La Crosse."
I thought he was joking, was he? |

When Frank Black played in Winnipeg last year,he was so impressed that everyone knew all the Pixies' songs that he said during the evening show in front of 700 people (sold out show), if the Pixies did play, they would come to Winnipeg. He kept his word with opening up the tour in Winnipeg! This show is going to be great plus give us Canadians some credit...we buy their stuff too!! Don't forget....Canada DID defeat the US in 1812! See y'all at the show! |

We don't NEED anyone to give us credit man. We're fine where we are. The inferiority complex is old and wearing thin. We weren't voted the #1 place to live in the fucking WORLD for nothing you know... and THAT has been a fact for many a year,.. Frank Black is smart enough to know where certain fanbases are,...he has a huge fanbase here.

Slow reply, for some reason I quit checking this thread. I haven't had Liberty Ale. Is that from the Anchor Steam brewery? I do love Anchor Steam, particularly on draft.
If anyone is in Davis for the show, we do have a very good brewpub that specializes in German Brews. It's called Sudwerk. |
