Before beginning their European tour, Pixies will play a very special show at the Pavilion, giving fans a first taste of their new album.
While Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having blazed the trail for artists from Nirvana to Radiohead to Pearl Jam, today, a whole new generation of music fans are discovering their iconic “loudquietloud” signature sound.
Pixies’ shows are simultaneously electrifying and lo-fi with focus on the music and almost no between-song banter. The band will rehearse and be prepared to play some 90 songs from all points of its career as well as introducing songs from the new album. And, as there is no nightly set list, the songs that are performed at every show are determined mere seconds in advance. From a live onstage mic that feeds only to the band members, sound engineer and lighting director, Black Francis calls out what the next song will be. Explained David Lovering on the nightly customization of the sets, “The best is when you can sense what the next song should be based on the atmosphere in the room. That’s really, ultimately what we’re going for, to read the room and to be able to make the right choice.”
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION TO AVOID TICKET SCALPING
As has been Pixies’ long-time custom to thwart ticket scalping and put face-value tickets directly into the hands of their fans, the band will be implementing as much anti-scalping and anti-secondary resale measures as possible.
Its gonna cost me a lot of brownie points but cant say no to a warm up in a small venue :) |

Brain is a bit fried from drive home but that looks pretty accurate.
Lots of long extended intros and outros for the older stuff, Charles' playing was quite loose but in a good way.
Joey fluffed one of the new ones by miles, not even the right key but recovered. Paz and Dave are so in the zone, best thing about the band for me :) Doolittle stuff sounded fresher after the Pilgrim/Surfer shows. No Trompe or Bossa surprises but we got Ana and Winterlong which I've always missed somehow.
Recorded it but laptop is dead so can't actually share it at mo :(
And they've finally actually got rid of setlists, Charles is just winging it. |

Not me! Had a quick check of mine, sounds pretty good - recorded from barrier directly in front of Paz. Need to borrow a laptop to get the file cut down and uploaded somewhere.
Am downloading this one for comparison :) |

interesting stuff from the review : "Bassist Paz takes the vocal for ‘All The Saints’, which has a pulsating tremolo intro."
-- "Aristophanes! (gong sounds)" "Fucking up my devotion!"

I presume they mean the bit she sings in the intro... it was certainly the normal version in Cardiff the following night!

Yeah, it was the standard version.
The whole poker-face, no talking thing doesn't suit them - they should at least smile a bit if they feel like it. |

so crazy that this is how they do their sets. Is there any other bands that wing it like that?! I have no idea how he does it. How can you just come up with songs 35 times under pressure when the last song is ending?? |

I think he's cheating a bit, there was definitely paper taped to the riser tonight but he's definitely calling some on the fly |

Yeah this is insane to me. I used to play live a lot and I was unbelievably lost without a setlist. And I am just by myself on stage. But my mind would go totally blank. I need everything planned before the show or I panic. I actually have a recurring nightmare still where I am standing on stage and forget all of my songs. |

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a master list of all songs the band is rehearsed up on and ready to play that Charles can look at as a reference, but he does call them out on the fly. Based on mood and how the audience is reacting, it's brilliant that they can do that. I know the lighting/sound crew doesn't know what's coming next, they have the same in ear monitors that the band has and can hear what Charles calls out to the band from his mic by the drum riser, and then they react. It's all pretty much on the fly, but they do cull the choices from about 70 songs I think. |

He doesn't go to the mic after every song tho - there are some he can cue cos he plays the intro but Dave starts quite a few without any kind of nod from Charles. I thought there might be blocks of songs but I can't see any patterns :/ |

He does cues for some songs, and if there are songs that only he starts out on, he'll launch into it and the band will then come in when they are meant to. |
