I know nothing about how to rank great guitarists. When I look up lists of the greatest guitarists of all time Joey is no where to be found, but a lot of others are there whose music I don't enjoy as much. Does that say more about me or the list makers or Joey?

Is Joey one of the all time greats or just a weirdo that some of us are obsessed with? Is he even the best guitarist FBF has played with?

Possibly but we are in good company (Jonny Greenwood, David Bowie etc)

Yes

Rankings are completely meaningless and just there to create cheap media content, so I couldn't care less.

Best guitarist FBF has worked with? I woud put him on par with Lyle Workman. But he definitely deseves a lot of credit for the "Pixies sound".

I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band

Joey isn’t a guitar player.
That’s probably why he’s my favourite guitar player.

The contrast between his inabilites and the incredible scores he created for Charles songs is simply mesmerizing.

Hard to imagine the band without him.

I'm not a musician so I'm not privy to his technicalities, but as someone who listens to music I know he's very unique.

He is pretty much synonymous with the Pixies, sure his work on FB, TOTY, DITS and DW is good but you can be forgiven for not knowing he's there as there's a lot of stuff going on.

Same with 'guest' appearances, he appears much more reserved - ie Martini's and on 'He Vanished' by Mark Mulcahy.

But with Pixies he's at the heart of it all and that's fantastic.

Though I equally think Rich Gilbert helped elevate the Catholics to a place Workman could not go - with all respect to Workman , an album like DITS could not be possible without Rich Gilbert.
