Very sad - I was listening to one of his albums yesterday. I'm sure I read that there is supposedly going to be a release of many of the songs that did not make it onto the American Recordings series he carried out with Rick Rubin around Christmas.

That news spread faster than the Pixies reunion one. Sad indeed.

It spread faster because honestly, Johnny Cash is SUCH an American icon. I'm also really sad about this, but not surprised. I suspected after June Carter left a coupla months ago, Johnny wasn't far behind.
The bummer about having a mainstream station being your clock radio is that when it goes off, the bottom of the hour news heds are the first thing I hear in the morning, and often its "[Famous Person] passed away last night." And that's what I woke up to this morning. I grabbed my "Essential Johnny Cash" and am listening to it now at work. Right now: "Cry Cry Cry". God, this was and is GREAT stuff.
Still deciding whether Lou Reed is the Rock and Roll Johnny Cash or the other way around. After this, I'd say the former.
Geez... those memphis seven boys are dropping like flies.... ironic that freakin Jerry Lee's gonna outlive 'em all, just like Keith Richards will probably outlive all the other stones....

Wow, I'm right now listening to this stuff, that impeccable, crystal clear Sam Phillips production.... who the fuck needs $200,000 digital production costs, when stuff this great was done on 4 track in a storefront in Memphis...

Very sad about Mr. Cash but I agree not surprising.
Did you all hear John Ritter died??! Jack Tripper! Now, that is shocking to me. |

Aw man. I'm at my husband's office and we both had to put down our donuts and have a long moment of silence for Mr. Cash. I figured he wouldn't be long for this world after lovely June's death. Guess I'll be cleaning house to "Live at Folsom Prison" today.
John Ritter! WTF! That's very sad indeed.

If you have internet streaming radio, WMSE-FM out of Milwaukee's "Chicken Shack" (great old country, not the dreck they call country these days, on an alternative community-supported station to boot!) is running solid Johnny Cash from 9 am to Noon Central today.

I'm sure Jack's death is just a misunderstanding that will be cleared up at the end of the half hour. Larry, Chrissy, and Janet will be slobbing at the Regal Beagle when Jack walks in after his weekend getaback with a tall blonde. |

but the blonde will leave after Jack trips over something and spills his drink from the Beagle on her. then Larry will make his move on the blonde and Mr.Furly will get pretty excited cuz Larry left Lona sitting in the corner by herself. Ya,y a I used to watch it lots. |

while i recognize the irony, and humor, of my statement about eating 2 Krispy Kream donuts and thinking about John Ritter, it's actually a true story. as in, i did have 2 donuts this morning.. |

I found out Johnny Cash died from my mom.
Also on 9/11/01, I found out from my mom what was happening. Sheesh, if there is a Pixies reunion I'll probably hear it from her first.

It's all good, darlin.' American Recordings is mighty fine. I also have a "Sun Years" compilation that I like. He's done some interesting work lately, but it's also important to hear some classic Cash, because it's great stuff.

I usually beleive that chronological is best. Perhaps I'll do that. Also, I may imagine you calling me "darlin'" with a slight but not annoying southern drawl. Then, I'll put on some tea and some Johnny Cash, and cry until I pass into a peaceful slumber.
